My daughter had them on her legs for about 2 years! They were awful because they would pop and bleed - like one day I thought she had smeared ketchup on her leg... But anyway, they finally started going away when I got some Zymaderm from Amazon to treat them with. We also put bandaids on the ones that we could tell were about to pop open.

@karenbme: yes, the treatment was traumatic😭 I really hope it's not several years, but I guess we will see.

@bees_knees: I wish I could just bathe my girls together, that would be a huge time saver, but I guess I'll need to wait until my oldest daughter's in the clear. I'm so sorry all four of the kids have them. It's crazy how contagious they are.

All 4 of my kids currently have it. DS2 (age 5) got it first, and has it the worst. We took him to the ped about 3 weeks after we noticed them and they froze off the ones they could see, but I don't think it made any difference at all. She said to expect them to last 2-12 months, so I'm a little down to see your experiences of them lasting years.

My other kids only have a handful of spots. All on their backs. I assume because riiiiight before we noticed DS2's, we were in FL and sharing pool towels, etc. They don't seem to bother anyone (itch/hurt/etc) and they are covered by clothing so I'm not worried about them. But man, I really hope they don't last *years* :bummed:

@winter_wonder: My 2yo has these on her arms and trunk. Our ped said not to worry about them, they’ll stick around until her immune system catches on, but they’re not doing any harm and the treatments are hard for kids (which sounds like your experience) so they generally don’t refer people. They recommend covering with tape if she’s scratching or swimming with other kids, but generally expect them to clear on their own in 1-4 years.

This is the tape we used - cut it to fit the spots and it stayed on pretty well.

My son had it for about 3 years, maybe a bit more … his was mostly on his trunk. Every one left a little scar which I don’t think is the norm! We decided not to do the derm route although considering how long it lasted I wish I had done it right when it started (but of course, I didn’t realize what it was for a while). We were lucky his was mostly covered by clothes or a rash guard.

We did a couple Amazon-sourced treatments with tea tree oil and such - lots of smell and never sure how much they helped, maybe some. They’re supposed to dry them up and get your immune system to notice it I guess. The one thing we did to finish it up that really did seem to work was using a padded medical tape (so it was thick and wouldn’t rip) to cover them tightly (change every few days or as needed). Also keeps them from scratching which spreads it. It would seem to move them along to the final stage where they got bigger and redder and then healed up - often the tape would end up removing the top and core of it at the end - just be careful not to touch the inside which can spread them). Then band aid as needed. I don’t know if the tape was just the key for him or they were just ready to go away after 3 years. It still was a slow road but I stayed motivated seeing it working (where with the brush on treatments, I’d have trouble staying motivated).

Long answer sorry! I did so much reading about it and the conclusion seemed to be burn them off like you tried, or just fool around with all the old wives’ tales and know it’s a long road. Good luck!!!

How long did mollescum last? Did you treat? If so, what was it?

DD (age 6) has had mollescum for over a year. We got a referral from her ped to see a dermatologist. She recommended treating with acid. They scab up and then are hopefully gone or you treat again. We tried this, but DD was miserable. Her mollescum is behind her legs but also between her butt/vagina area. She was in so much pain, crying to go to the bathroom, etc. It was terrible. The derm recommended another treatment bc some of the spots were still there. We said no bc of how traumatic it was. But, now its been almost a year later and the mollescum are coming back like crazy. I'm noticing way more spots on her legs behind her knees and she still has a lot by her butt/vagina area. Are there any other treatment options that have worked?!?! Help!!
