@Foodnerd81: DD has a few spots too. I'm just waiting to show them to the pediatrician when we go in for flu shots. They don't bother her now, but last week they were spreading and she said they itch. So I put calendula cream on them before bed for a few days.

Bumping this thread because I just saw one pimple like spot on my 2.5 year old’s genitals. I looked all over and it’s literally one spot, though her eczema is also flaring up a little on her legs. I’m guessing I should call the pediatrician in the morning? It looks exactly like the photos I saw of it online. She says it doesn’t hurt but she was grabbing at it in the bath tonight before I realized it was there.

We dealt with this a few years ago. My oldest had them go away after a couple weeks without doing anything. My youngest though spread a lot. I put wart remover gel on a couple big ones, a few it really stung while the gel dried. But after that they scabbed up and didn’t come back.

Can anyone chime in on what your kid’s new bumps looked like if it was spreading? So my son has had bumps (like 7) insides his elbow forever, we’ve recently cleared a couple but I wonder if his scratch during that spread them to his face. It’s near his mouth and mostly just red - so doesn’t have that pimple look yet but is a bit bumpy and scaly - and seems persistent. He’s also had perioral dermatitis a year plus ago and it looks similar - don’t know what to wish for there since that required weeks of painful erythromycin gel and got worse before better.

Anyway just curious if anyone remembers, I can take him in but I’m not sure pedi will know either!!

@Twolittlemen: yep, some don’t react I guess or need more. I know I read online or my sister told me that she had to retreat some a few times. I retreated one that the doctor had put stuff on initially and put a bit too much of the stuff on so it burned the skin around it. I’ll have to wait to retreat others because the doctor said I should give the skin time to heal for a few weeks before doing it again. Oops. My sister said she applied it with a toothpick and sort of poked a bit to make sure it was getting inside or to try and aid the process.

@Chuckles: the derm also told me they could go away on there own... but it could take YEARS!!! That sounds completely unreasonable when they spread. Also I’ve researched some that says they generally spread to and stick around longer on people with weak immune systems. I wouldn’t say that my son has one but it has made me wonder.

@Twolittlemen: Thanks for sharing your experience. I saw online that they typically go away on their own, even though they can last many months. I thought about waiting it out, but I don't understand how it will go away on its own when they just keep spreading. I'm glad we have a dr appointment relatively soon.

@Mrs. Goose: wow! Our second derm who was much more thorough said 30-45 minutes is enough. The goal is to blister and that should be sufficient. Our original derm had us doing antibiotic cream (mupricin) and steroid ointment twice per day for two weeks. The second derm wasn’t so hip on that either but pushed heavy moisturizing with cerave.

It’s interesting how they all have their own way.

@MamaG: my doctor said 6 hours. I’m putting some polysporin for scarring because she picks off the scabs after and I can’t stop her because she does it when she’s alone. I’m a bit sensitive to adhesive and I think she is too so it’s a combo of that plus the actual stuff. I hope this is all over soon. Poor kid.

@Mrs. Goose: It was semi traumatic for us too. The derm we saw for most our treatments had us not wash for four hours. She was uncomfortable starting at about 45 minutes. And the actual washing was a screaming chaotic mess. But otherwise, easy breezy. We didn’t use any bandaging or rape though.

Thanks, everyone. Glad to hear that I shouldn't worry too much about swimming and not at all about school. At least at school he's mostly covered and staying dry. I bought a long sleeve rash guard for the summer, so I might send him in that to swimming but I won't worry about it.

@Twolittlemen: I was bathing my kids together. And had to stop so my younger doesn’t get it. It sucks so much. It has been two months now. The stuff is quite painful for my little when it blisters and I pull the tape off so I have to dose with Tylenol. I feel so bad for her, but I also don’t want her to have it anymore and it was starting to spread. Probably about 30 in the armpit/tummy area.

My son started with about 6 spots on his knee about 10 months ago. His pedi said to give it time and it will go away. I WISH I HADN'T listened. He now has about 18 on his knee, and 20+ in his armpit, plus a few random ones.

We just started having the Cantharone done. They will only do one area per visit. They did the ones on his knee and about a quarter of them didn't respond. It's going to take many treatments to get rid of.

I specifically asked the derm about spreading it in swimming pools and she said it wasn't a risk. The virus also doesn't live on hard surfaces. The biggest source of spreading (besides scratching them and then another area of skin) is soft, moist surfaces. Towels and bedding she said.

I do live in fear of my younger one catching it. But if he does I'm going to take him straight to the derm.

@Chuckles: I think there’s a lot of exposure in general and there’s only so much you can do. I did cover my son’s with gentle medical tape when we went to the splash park the other day, but they’re pretty localized. Half the reason I did so was that tape is one treatment people recommend! (But I only left it on while there so we could go back to naturasil treatments)

Our second dermatologist that we only had to use once was amazing. He told us this is usually tied to eczema in that the tiny cracks in the skin from eczema is what allows the Mollescum to spread. So make sure to moisturize your kids well.

So glad to see this thread. My son has them too. There's maybe 15 spots on his trunk, but they are spreading down his arm. How cautious is everyone about spreading them at places like school and swimming? Our pediatrician said not to worry about it. But I know it's really contagious and I feel weird sending him to swim lessons where he's hanging all over the teacher. We can't get into the dermatologist until 6/8.

We are using naturasil too - his are inside his elbow. At first i wasn’t sure if it was doing anything. I started alternating it with tea tree oil from TJs and his big two are gone! (Not sure if it was time or the extra product that got it there.) They got big and gross and he scratched and I’m a little afraid that may have spread some new ones on his face though (although irritating the spots is supposed to help so maybe it was a good thing too). Right now I can’t tell if the face stuff is molluscum or something else. The naturasil and definitely the tea tree oil dry his skin for sure but seemed a small price to pay. On his face though not sure we can get away with it. His elbow ones hadn’t budged in at least 6m and I’m so happy to see progress.
