I think its good to offer as though you are willing to pay. However, even if she doesn't accept, I would discuss an amount that you could provide just to cover the cost of things she will need to watch your child. Things like an extra PNP, Swing, Food when the baby is eating, gas, membership to playgroups or zoos, etc.

Since my parents are so much more financially comfortable I know if I offered money they would just laugh. I'd ask around to the local moms and find the going rate and offer her what you feel is fair and see where it goes from there.

One of my friends pays her mom to watch her kid--just enough to cover all the extra costs of schlepping her kid around and stuff! Just a little mad money.

If your mom's on disability, you might have to be careful how much you pay her...I know my mom is on disability and can't have "income"

I would be honest with her and ask her if she would like to be paid to look after your child. If she says no then drop the subject all together.

My mom used to be a nurse but badly injured herself catching a falling patient and can no longer work. So, it works out perfectly because now she wants to provide the childcare for our baby (when he/she comes). She is beyond excited and I am elated to have someone I trust so much caring for our child.

My question is, how do I bring up the subject of money? I don't even know what the going rate for childcare is. I know she would do it for free, and is genuinely happy to just be able to spend the time with her grandchild, but I feel like that would be taking advantage.

How would you all handle this?
