I just had to come back here and update this thread. After all the talk about whether it’s ok to pee outside and the double standard for boys and girls... yesterday we were all playing outside with the neighbors, including a couple 7 year old boys. The boys had gotten used to peeing in the woods near the houses when they were potty training and never stopped. Well apparently they did yesterday and my 5.5 year old daughter thought it looked fun, because we look over and she is standing up and pulling up her pants and underwear. She had squated, peed, and “wiped with a leaf”. We had a good talk about how we don’t pee outside like that, and the boys shouldn’t be peeing near her either and if they started to, she should remind them. Their parents had a good talk about how they are too old to be peeing outside in front of the neighbors like that. A learning experience for all.

But DD was so proud of herself for pointing the pee back so she didn’t get it on herself or clothes at all. I couldn’t let her see me laughing.

@Petitduck: That "legend"!! When I told DH this morning that I just learned that "lots of people" pee in swimming pools he said, wait, aren't there chemical components where the water changes color if you pee and they will know that you peed in the pool ?! I was like, dude I thought that was a portion of an Adam Sandler movie?! 😂

@Petitduck: There's no grass at all--it's green-painted playground surface stuff. I don't know what it's called, but it's kind of rubbery. And then there's a tiny bit of dirt around each tree. haha.

@Anagram: haha. I guess so. I like to think highly, but also often have my hopes dashed.

Is that fake grass? That’s definitely not the kind of tree my kid has peed behind... that is weird and gross.

@graceandjoy: I don’t remember when I found out you weren’t supposed to pee in pool, but I was older too and I feel like the only reason I stopped was because I heard that rumour about the pool going purple or changing colour if you peed and then everyone would know and I got scared! Haha. I tell my kid not to pee in the bath or pool. She gets out of the bath, but a few weeks ago she didn’t and just told me she was peeing in there with her younger brother... while they were both drinking the water. Weirdos.

Haha I am loving this thread! I've always figured that people pee in the pool. I personally was told never to, I don't remember if I did it though as a kid :silly: I teach my oldest to never pee in the pool either, but who knows :meh:

But agreeing with @DesertDreams88: I am not that worried about actual pee as she said it's mostly water and mostly sterile.

@erinbaderin: So knowing that other people don't feel the same way about random people's pee--would you still rinse out peed-on pants in a fountain that kids were actively playing in, before you came there with the pants? Or would you take them home?

I'm totally not attacking you at all, just trying to understand that lady's thought process. Like at home, when my kiddo is having a huge tantrum and screaming, I personally am find ignoring it if I've already tried other solutions. If she screams for 30 minutes over a broken banana, I just let her do her thing. But I realize that in public, a screaming child is probably not okay with everyone else there, so I remove her. Because I realize that just because I'm okay with something, it doesn't mean everyone is, you know?

@Petitduck: I think you are overestimating the general public. =) You are thinking that because you would go to a secluded area and pee, that others would do the same. But that's not always the case. Like the story I told about the boys in the park in my town--During the day, it can be full with anywhere from 15-30 kids and adults, because there are daycares nearby that come to that park. These are the trees the boys were peeing on. There is also a restroom (usually kind of gross, but having girls, I have had to use it) in this park.

You can see it's not a grass, secluded, or far-away-from-play area. You have a lot of toddlers that sit in the tree wells and play right in there where the boys were peeing.

Not a big deal to me in this context. But I really wish we could have these public pee hating police officers come to the subway and do something about people peeing constantly in the elevator. :silly: There's always a puddle of pee there, and the bathroom is *right next to the elevator* and functional. It always reeks of some very strong combination of pee and pot. City life problems

@DesertDreams88: I always remember this. Maybe I have worked with kids and been around them so long that pee is a non issue to me. It just seems like water. I mean, I’ll clean it up and I don’t really want it on me or to drink it or anything, but it’s not Poo or vomit, which I have a harder time dealing with!

@erinbaderin: same. I was actually surprised by people having any issue with pee at all. If it’s going in some plants or on a tree at the park and outt of the way of main play idont see the issue at all.

As an adult with an overactive bladder I have had to pee outside, embarrassingly, a few times). I think three times in my adult life where it wasn’t a road trip and if I didn’t pee somewhere I would have peed in my pants and wouldn’t have been able to change for a while. I tried to find the most secluded spot possible. It’s a point of high stress for me, bathroom locations, and if I want to avoid peeing on the side of a road for a road trip then I have to avoid drinking anything at all and that isn’t healthy. I’m constantly trying to time my liquid consumption with outings with my children to the park and it irritates me to no end that they don’t just put a porta potty near every park. There would be at least one kid and one parent who would very mich appreciate that.

And, my kid is 3.5 and really had to pee the other day on the highway. We pulled over and did it. She absolutely couldn’t wait. She has been potty trained for a year and it was only a half an hour drive. I have to hold her to pee outside though. She doesn’t know how to squat and pee and I haven’t taught her so she’s shielded by my entire body basically. I can vividly remember my mother holding me outside so I could pee in a bush when I was little. I don’t think most people with a small exception, encourage their children to engage in public urination, but it’s just a necessity. I think it’s sad that there is any kind of chastising for children or parents of young children in the case of a clear necessity. Im not going to tell my kid to pee in their pants or pee in their car seat, that just seems so stupid to me. I get it, people feel differently, but it just seems like such a step back for toilet training and body respect. We did do pull ups for a few drives when she was first training and said it was okay for her to pee in them but she didn’t.

I've had two instances where I let/encouraged my 3-year-old pee outside in a fairly public place. He'd been toilet trained for over a year but was in this control phase where he would refuse to go until it was desperate. We had a span of a few months where he would always freak out desperate for the loo on the way home from daycare. Usually I could talk him through holding it until we could get home or some place with a toilet. But twice it was absolutely clear he wasn't going to make it and there wasn't enough time to wash and drip dry the carseat before we would have to drive again so...

@irene: pee is basically sterile (??) and poop and vomit are def not. Pee is mostly water (91-96%). Soooo... no big deal to me.

Straight from wikipedia bc I think it's interesting and relevant:
"Urine has a role in the earth's nitrogen cycle. In balanced ecosystems urine fertilizes the soil and thus helps plants to grow. Therefore, urine can be used as a fertilizer. Some animals use it to mark their territories. Historically, aged or fermented urine (known as lant) was also used for gunpowder production, household cleaning, tanning of leather and dyeing of textiles."

It’s so common that people pee in the pool or ocean that when you go you already know you’re basically relaxing in a urinal. I’m not sure why poop and puke is where pool sanitation draws a line because surely there is pee in there.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: @Purpledaisy: @Foodnerd81: You all are TRULY ok with people peeing in the pool?! I mean, I understand there's chlorine but it is other people's PEE and I don't know about you but I do accidentally drink pool water... I feel like THAT would be more deserving of a ticket from a cop - at least I have the choice of not stepping onto strange puddles of "water" outside of a gas station. 😂

If peeing in the pool is so OK, why do pools like the Y have to close up when some kids puke in the pool?! Gosh, I understand this is another topic but I can not wrap my head around this information.

@Purpledaisy: @Foodnerd81: Great. Swimming will never be the same again. I hope high end hotel pools are better? How can there not be any warning signs (do not pee in the swimming pool lol) when it seems that everyone (but me) kinda commonly acknowledged the "fact"....? Just like noise-free / smoke free sections in a train / restaurant..etc can there be a urine-free pool? I am truly disturbed.

@Foodnerd81: Coming to think about it maybe the wife didn't want to clean the bathrooms so she send everyone out to the yard 😂. Dang pretty good idea actually. Clean bathrooms is half the battle to a clean house, saves energy and water on flushing too 😂. The lawn guy peeing in the woods is creepy though. I hope our lawn guys don't do things like that .... 😬

@irene: oh yes, people definitely pee in public pools. Kids who just don’t want to get out, lazy adults... not to mention swim diapers don’t contain the pee at all, only poop. That’s what the chlorine is for!

And yeah I totally understood her reasoning, but also... I was paying a fair amount for the lessons. Can’t that include a cleaner for her bathroom?? I actually was wishing my kid would have just quietly peed in her pool! :silly:

And her backyard does not smell a toilet. I find it bizarre but it’s her yard. And her husband wants to- she’s not telling him to pee outside, he wants to. He goes into the woods behind the yard. They also are positive their lawn guys pee in the woods behind their house.

@Foodnerd81: I can't help but to react to your friend who her kids AND her HUSBAND pee in the backyard HAHAHA!!!! Oh my Lord.... So if you drive by it smells like a public toilet?! I wonder what if they go through something like a remodeling. Our estimate always include a rented porta-john outside (because we didn't want all the construction workers come in and use our bathroom). They'd be like screw that we'll save that money, all the construction workers can pee in my yard! HAHAHA!!

And the swimming teacher is strange but in a strange way I can understand... if she teaches regularly, that means she has to host a lot of wet kids peeing in her own bathroom. While girls pee IN the toilet, boys do have aiming problems. Not to say the messes to endure with the wet trails going from the swimming pool to the bathroom and back. But yes, that's really strange to instruct your child to pee in the lawn, DS would NEVER EVER be able to do that, I would have to find another teacher if that were the case.

After reading all of the above, I find that I am very civilized lol. How can anyone instruct anyone to pee anywhere in close proximity to someone's home? That's almost like a prank or a trick you are playing on someone you hate.

@Purpledaisy: Hmm.... I kinda see your point now... yes, it would be odd to see a girl squat and urinate in the gas station parking lot... but maybe it was more toward the back and no one can see, and absolutely no solution I *could* imagine that? Cuz if I had a girl, she's 2 years old and she absolutely HAD TO go, I were super pregnant, I'd probably do that :silly: When I read the story I am not imagining the kid peeing right at the front entrance. But who knows maybe he was lol

This whole discussion makes me worry. If it were OK for soooo many people to just pee outside of people's property / pee everywhere around the park, does that mean people would think it were OK to pee in a public swimming pool? :meh: I mean this never come across my mind but I also didn't know people would pee everywhere in the lawn/ park and thought it was OK.

I agree that an actual ticket is ridiculous. Also agree that some people definitely are more lenient with letting their kids pee outside. Personally I think it’s a little gross- my friend let’s both her kids- boy and girl- pee in their packyard. Her husband does this too! Their backyard isn’t THAT big. But it’s their house so they can do what they want.

I have let me daughter’s pee outside when we didn’t have a good option, including in a parking lot. My same friend used to let her son pee on a tree in the public playground where there was no public bathroom. He had a small bladder and definitely couldn’t have made it home so the alternative was just never going to the playground (we lived in the city and had no yards then).

But I have to tell you this! My then just turned 5 year old took swim lessons at a local lady’s house. I always made her pee right before we got there, but one day she just really had to go. The teacher was like, sorry I don’t have a bathroom she can use and my cleaning lady is here. She can pee in that corner of yard where my dog pees. So I had to hold her up so she could pee on the gravel like this woman’s dog. How do you run swimming lessons in your backyard pool without a bathroom for kids to use? And she was a great swimming instructor but I couldn’t believe that!
