@caterw: omg her idea of matching is amazing. Like red and white striped Christmas shirt with flowered pants with some maroon in them- they match, see? Red and red? (Back when she actually wore pants. Ever.)

@looch: Yeh, the dress is in my cart. Haha! I'm envisioning a photoshoot. But I just gotta hide it from her until then because she's notorious for rubbing food on her clothes and rolling around on the ground.

@PinkElephant: I hear ya about sales. I'm a total bargain hunter and buy in advance. I've been lucky so far because as long as it's the right type of clothing, she'll wear it.

@Foodnerd81: It have gotten it easy! But when she was around 2, she insisted on only wearing "princesses" (tunics or dresses) because Disney princesses always seem to be in dresses, she thought that's what they were called? :silly: She also refused to wear anything but leggings and tights. No shirts, sweaters, pants, and sweats were ever worn. I had to get her a whole new wardrobe because I couldn't handle the stress in the morning. Haha! She's really eased up since then and now interested in shirts (it's been over 2 years)!

My kid started having an opinion around 2!! Her favorite colors are light pink and light blue; she VASTLY prefers that all items in her closet be one of these colors or at least coordinate with them. She will tell me what outfits "match", and refuses to put on items that don't (her idea of "matching" is pretty hilarious).

I do usually take her clothes shopping so she can help pick things. I hand her a few options of things that she needs and she can choose between them. She loves to shop- I'm doomed when she is a teenager if she is already like this at 3!

@kodybear: Ditto on the tags! Usually it's past the point of return by the time it gets rejected, but I can sell, regift, donate, or tell my next kiddo it's new for them if the tags are still on!!

@kodybear: my daughter also likes "pretty" clothes (dresses, tights, tutus), and started having an opinion around 2! If it's pink, she'll usually wear it. But I've had a number of incidents where I buy something and my kid won't wear it, so it feels like wasting. If I'm online shopping I will usually give them 2-3 choices (like if it's a t-shirt with a different print/color). I don't often take them shopping, but I do let them choose if we go somewhere.

Both my kids (3 year old DD, 1.5 year old DS) ask for specific clothes. I usually say yes, because I want them to enjoy the clothes they wear. I have to share this because it is so cute... I use rockets of awesome, which is a subscription children's clothing company who sends a box every season, and I keep what I like and send the rest back). The last box that was sent to my son had this super cute hamburger shirt in it. We kept that and sent the rest back and my daughter saw it and asked if she could have a matching shirt so they could wear them together. Luckily for me, they had one in her size and in a different color. They are so stinking cute together in their matching hamburger shirts.

dd started this young! probably around 2.5 ish? shes very particular about what she'll wear. she likes anything "pretty", meaning dresses, skirts, etc. at 4 yo, i just buy a bunch of clothes, have her pick waht she likes, then return the rest. i also don't take the tag off until she wears it because many times she'll say she likes something and never wear it. :-/ i have no idea where she got this from, i'm always in sweats!! ;-)

I've given up with my 3.5 year old. I have her look at what I'm ordering online before I place the order, then when it arrives I have her again look at it and say if she will wear it or not. Then I still don't remove the tags until she is actually wearing it. Even with all that, about half of the clothes that fit her have been worn for only a few hours before she decided she won't wear them again.

She wears the same handful of dresses and tights these days. She won't even wear leggings under a dress anymore. It's so frustrating. But we have had battles over leggings vs tights and I have given up. She wins.

So I would say you have gotten off easy so far!!

My three-year-old has asked for a Snow White dress (handmade by me) complete with high white collar, so I bought some fabric and am preparing to get started on it. However, she might get a white Peter Pan collar because I want it to be an outfit she can wear more than just as dress-up clothes.

At 4 I got some input but lots of time he would change his mind later on. At 5 now I choose but run it by him (online). I dislike taking them to stores because inevitably they pick things that are bad quality/ugly/expensive so I prefer to filter options.

DD is 3.5 and she's been pickier about her clothes this past year so I definitely involve her. I usually let her browse catalogs to get a sense of what she's into these days, so I don't necessarily get the exact thing she asks for but I may get something similar elsewhere. I have also started asking her before making a purchase that I am unsure about, and that has worked out so far. For ex, the other day I saw a good deal on some dresses I thought she'd like and asked her, and she immediately said no. Very glad I asked first.

@Mrs. Sunshine: Yeah, I'm awful though and can't turn off my bargain hunting gene - when there are such great end-of-season sales, I'm going to buy ahead! :) Luckily they older one at least is consistent, so if she says she likes it now, she's likely to like it in a few months. The middle one can be persuaded into liking things, still...and if all else fails, I can try to get the baby to wear it in the future, haha. It's the blessing/curse of having three the same sex pretty close together.

@SugarplumsMom: Don't get me wrong, a lot of it is about comfort. Around age 3 she started refusing to wear jeans (and at 4.5, jeggings count as jeans too), and prefers to wear tights with dresses/tutus - leggings when I make her b/c it's too cold for sweater tights. From there it moved on to what she liked the look of - generally pink, doggies, and a bit of bling wins her heart, but every now and then she surprises me (and she doesn't like a cute Gap dog shirt I got her, for no apparent reason).

DS1 - yes. Since about age 3, I tend to take him shopping with me when I'm looking for his clothes, and let him pick them out (with guidelines). He's now 6, and we have it down to a science. We just did some spring shopping at a local store - all I had to say was "try to find 3 pairs of shorts and 1-2 tee shirts." He also found a bowtie and a pair of swim trunks I agreed to buy. If he can't find what he needs, then we go to another store. He definitely has favorite brands/styles. It also keeps him from whining when we're shopping because he's invested in what we're doing. He also loves to help pick out clothes for DS2, who is really too young to show much interest.

If we are out shopping specifically for their clothes then yes. Both girls (3.5 and 2) have picked their own shirts, pajamas and dresses. Not all of them but they both definitely have opinions and clear likes and dislikes. At 3.5 and I'm almost afraid to go shopping without her opinion now, I think there might be backlash

Both my girls like to pick out their own clothes. My 4.5 year old regularly sees things in the Hanna Andersson/Tea catalogs she requests. If we have a need for that particular type of item, I'll sometimes oblige. Recently we had a gift card and caught a sale at HA, so I let both the 4.5 and almost-3 year old pick things out online. Likewise, my almost 3 year old recently chose her own bathing suit, and pulled some shorts/shirts off a rack that she said she liked, and I agreed to buy them.

At this point, they only wear what they like in their closets anyway, so I might as well save myself some $$ and only purchase what they say they like/want. If they're asking for a third or fourth formal dress when they have several that fit (and no big occasion coming up), the answer is probably no. But for more practical things, why not? :)

I'm curious about this too! My 2.5 year old will tell me she likes things in catalogs but other the closest we get is her preferring to wear certain types of clothes when she gets dressed so I tend to stock up on that type of clothing (twirly dresses and tutus- which thrills me!) My two girls will be almost 3 years apart so I'm curious how long I get to put them in matching outfits!

I left a catalog out and DD found it and actually asked for a dress. It really took me off guard because it's the first clothing item she's specifically asked for. She's 4.5 yo and I'm pretty sure she's already forgotten about it, but I'm kind of tempted to get it for her if it wasn't so pricey (and impractical).
