Yes I totally have this and it sucks. I'm going to an occupational therapist for therapy right now and she does massage, ice, electric therapy and she made me a big plastic brace.

One of the previous posters is right... my OT said that if you have de Quervain's, you need to immobilize the thumb as well as the wrist. I bought a wrist brace at Walgreen's and she said that while it would help keep the wrist at a neutral position, it was better to also immobilize the thumb.

Yes I had this and got treated by a chiropractor. I had started seeing her for hip and back problems and when I showed her my wrist and told her about the pain she did some adjustments and taped it up. She also told me to alternate heat and cold, take ibuprofen as needed, and wear one of those braces. It took about a month but it got better! I highly recommend chiro!

Yep tendinitis in both arms and one wrist. It sucks. My doctor said there's not much you can do just rest the muscles. I figured it might go away when my kids are older and I stop carrying them around.

@autumnlove: I had exactly the same experience.

Thanksgiving day my wrists started hurting and my fingers went numb. It got better after birth (early January) with the numbness, but still hurt for about 6 months post partum (I didn't notice it any more after June). My OB had me wear wrist braces and ok'ed occasional pain meds, but that is about it. He said it was due to those darn hormones.

It got better, it just took a while.

It's de Quervain tendinitis. It sucks! I've had it. The important thing is to immobilize the thumb, not just the wrist, and keep the swelling down so it can heal. I took 800mg of ibuprofen round the clock, had to keep it elevated & need physical therapy. It'll feel do much better in the right brace! My physical therapist made mine with molded plastics, but the orthopedic surgeon had given me one that was helpful too. Don't ignore it, it'll get worse if you do. Hope you feel better soon!

I have heard of this and it sucks! I struggled with wrist tendonitis (not mommy related) for several months and would really recommend a wrist guard! Keeps you from bending it and aggravating the problem. I got mine at Target and I think they're around $20.

@krsmall: So sorry to hear that you have this! My wrists started hurting a month before I gave birth and continued for 7 months post partum! I saw my Dr. who prescribed heavy duty braces and some meds to help with the pain around 3 months post partum!

YEP! It was REALLY bad for the first year post baby.
Went away on its own, but I think it may be back. Had the popping experience this morning!

I had DH buy me a wrist guard too.

yup, mommy tendonitis... I had it and it was awful. I kept saying I now know what arthritis must feel like. My doctor just said it's normal, because you're using muscles and stretching tendons that have never really been used before (diaper changing, rocking, and all that). I used a wrist guard and it helped a bit, at least kept it supported while I was changing diapers. It eventually goes away but man, that's painful :(

So, the past few days I have noticed a shooting pain in my hand and my thumb keeps popping in and out of socket. I did some research last night and it looks like I have "mommy wrist" (not the official name). Has anyone else had this? What did you do for treatment? It's sooo annoying.
