@regberadaisy: I would recommend getting a full time nanny. Then you would have her there on your work at home day so she could mainly care for the baby while you get your work done. Nannies will also do light housekeeping, grocery shopping, and start dinner for you.

Also, if you teach your baby to be a good sleeper from the start, you'll have an easier time with whatever child care/ work situation you may have.

I work from home and I watched my friend's baby (she was almost 1) while she went grocery shopping for the baby's birthday party that weekend. I only had her for the last hour of my work day (on a Friday) and it was a good thing I was already done with my work for the week-- there was NO way I would be able to get anything accomplished.

I hope to still work from home most of the time once the LO is here, but I'm totally going to have my mom come over and watch the baby the entire day.

As an employer and a boss, the only way I would consider it is if you're either putting your child in daycare or have someone that is available for the working hours to care for your child. In my former line of work it would have been impossible to be both a mom to my son and work at the same time. He wasn't a dependable napper, and still isn't at 15 months.

Thanks everyone!

I'm starting to think the four 9 hour days then one 4 hour day makes more sense.
My mom will be here till the baby is about 3 months so I don't plan to bring it up to my employer until before then. So by then I hope we'll have a good idea of how fussy she is and if it will be feasible with her.
I plan to bring it up with my employer as a "probationary" time frame. ie We try it for 3 months and then we can sit down together at that time and see if it's working for both sides. If they feel I'm not getting my work done fast enough or if they feel I'm not really giving them my "four hours" at home then I'll just have to switch to be back in the office full time. And putting LO in daycare 4 days a week.
My boss is really really great so I don't see him saying no to trying this out. I just personally don't want to shaft them the hours so if I didn't feel like I was giving them their "four hours" then I would definitely say that.
Even though our hours are technically 830-5pm he's not really strict about that. As long as you get your 40 hours in that's all he cares. If there's a deadline you get the work done by that time. He doesn't care if you're working at night from home or in the office.
Unfortunately (fortunately in this case!) I'm not really at the place yet where I'm in a lot of conference calls so that's not really a issue. I feel like if my project managers knew this was the set up then I can go home the day before with enough work to tackle on a individual basis to last me the four hours.

I'm not sure if doing the every other week is really a feasible idea. I think having a set weekly schedule will be easier on my employer/co-workers, LO and the daycare as well.

The other thing is my husband's hours are usually a long 13 hour day or a 10-4 schedule. So it's possible for us to arrange something where the day I'm working from home he works 10-4. That way I can have a better chance of getting those four hours in.

haven't been there, but i did work from home. and honestly, i think there's absolutely NO way you can work from home 8 hours with an infant. it was hard enough without any distractions. unless you hire someone to watch the lo. but then, that defeats the purpose of working from home. i think 4 hours may be more feasible. since you can sporadically work or work while LO naps.

Meant to add - the 4 hour day would still be a stretch but doable if LO sleeps well ( and long!)

My first reaction was "Not very feasible".

I am not sure that you would get much work done when LO was awake. Keep in mind that you might get an hour chunk in the morning, maybe 2 hours in the afternoon ( or vice versa) when LO is asleep. If LO is a reasonable sleeper. That leaves you with quite a few hours that you would probably have to do at night when DH is home.

When my DH comes home I want to spend time with him, especially after LO has gone to bed for the night.Just my thought though.

I agree that it depends on your infant and whether s/he's a good sleeper. It was definitely not feasible with my LO. She wouldn't sleep unless someone was holding her so it was difficult for me to even return a phone call during the day.

Regardless, the 4 9 hour days and 4 hour at home would definitely work better.

I don't have a LO, but having babysat infants during the day, I know that it's a full time job and I don't think I could do it realistically without help, as nice as it sounds in theory. Also, keep in mind that many companies will not let you work from home unless you can prove that you have childcare. Not sure if that's the case for you.

I think the four 9 hour days and one 4 hour day from home makes a lot more sense. If your employer agrees to it, you could essentially work 4 hours spread out across the workday, allowing you to work during nap times and care for your LO.

Another idea: Have you considered working longer days and just having one day a week or every two weeks off? That way your LO wouldn't have to be in daycare as much.

I think it depends on your baby. My LO wouldn't let me set her down or she'd cry, except at night. I had to do everything with her in my arms- I didn't eat a meal without carrying LO for months! And she had reflux so there was lots of crying and I'd spend hours trying to soothe her.

For my line of work, it would not be feasible. I have to interact with all the banks during business hours. Doing all my work at night would be a no go. And my LO stopped napping at 15 months!

Not feasible for me, unless my husband was home to help out. I can get a few hours done in the evenings, but nap schedules just aren't consistent enough for me to be reliable with set hours.

I tend to space it out throughout the day, so I can get about 4 hours in a day. I swear that he knows when I'm working on an important e-mail... that is when he starts crying ;)

If you can arrange for it being a half day for the work at home day, it's definitely feasible. I work part time (half days) at home now. Even then, I do some work at night after the kids' bedtime if for whatever reason, LO didn't take her full naps during the day.

It's possible, but you generally have to work late at night and on weekends too! It's definitely doable if you have a supportive partner. Another big factor is how much your baby sleeps and if they are fussy or not...

My boss has a 5-month old now. When she returned from her maternity leave after 3 months, she took Fridays to work from home and she said she couldn't actually work a full day without help. So she had her mom and/or brother come over to be with her so that she could get some work done. But she said it wasn't actually feasible to do for her.

I think it might be possible for some moms but it wasn't for me. Whenever I was at home with my son he wanted to be held, fed, rocked, played with, etc and he didn't nap on a schedule so I couldn't get the hours in when people actually needed me. If there were conference calls I always had to be on mute and not participate in case he cried or babbled or I needed to speak to him. If you can work a variety of ways to make those 8 hours work then perhaps it would be doable for you - it just wasn't for me.

Throughout my pregnancy I have thought a lot about what will happen to my work schedule after I return from maternity leave.

My initial thought was to ask to work 1 day from home. My husband always gets 1 day off during the week. That way our LO will only have to be in day care 3 days a week.

But then I started thinking with a infant how feasible is it really to get a 8 hour work day in???

I would likely be returning to work when our LO is 3 months old.

So, moms, I ask you? How feasible is it for me to put in a 8 hour day with a infant at home? It doesn't have to be a continuous 8 hours. My job is mainly done on the computer, light communication w/coworkers can be done via phone/email.

Another option might be to work four 9 hour days at the office then one 4 hour day at home?

SAHM and not work is not really an option right now for various reasons.

Thanks!
