@mrsjyw: We're pretty much exactly where you are right now except that my LO2 is 14.5m and we'll wait closer to 18m this time until we'll potentially start trying (the first two are 21m apart).

So I can only talk about my experience of growing up as one of three kids with parents that travelled a lot with us. While it may seem a little daunting at first it really wasn't so bad. We got hotel rooms with 2 queen beds and one roll-away bed, admissions were often tricky but nowadays it is often 2 parents and all their kids under 12/18. On airplanes we usually took two rows. In one the three of us would sit and our parents sat behind us (once we were old enough). While younger one parent sat with two and one with the other one. Car wise we would just rent a mini van. For all other things we didn't really see a difference to families that travelled with two kids.

Since my mom managed three of us when we were young I'm pretty sure she would manage them now as a grandparent too.

I also felt the transition to 3 has been the easiest so far. Maybe its because my babies have systematically gotten easier (or maybe Ive gotten better!! ha!) but it does help too that my oldest is bused to school now was opposed to when I use to have to drive him. He still only goes half day for now so I think next year with him in full day and my middle in some kind of school (we havent fully finalized plans for which and where) itll be even easier for the first time in ages with just one.

I think for me though is we dont travel much and have many plans to travel without the kids yet so that stuff doesnt really factor into my own thoughts of family planning.

I do have some help, my mil comes over once a week for a few hours so I can run errands and I assume my mother is planning on retiring at some point (though its been pushed now for 2 years) and really she isnt as much help anyway in truth. We are close with my SILs and BILs and they do come by on weekends and help us when we are at dinners and take the kids for adventures sometimes so that all makes life a little more enjoyable even if its not an every day thing.

My house lives in a state of ok a bomb went off to ok so a small bomb went off. I cant even remember when I cleaned my bedroom to be honest but we are surviving

The biggest challenge I think is that we are pinned at home a lot as both girls nap still and so we cant get out as much but Ill be honest I rather they nap and I can rest (on weekends when DH is with DS) and have some time on my own too so I wouldnt change this even though I realize this limits our time for fun stuff on weekends etc I also realize these things will still be there in a few years so its not a huge deal we are missing right now.

Honestly going from two to three was easier than going from one to two.
My expectations on what I can get done are already low, I'm used to bringing loads of crap around every where I go, baby sister nurses on the go. It's not that big of an adjustment.
We're knee deep in baby so we just keep in keeping on.
I'm using the car more than I used to and relying on DH for more things but we're both just so used to it now that it's easy. We used to fight about bedtimes and meals and random stuff and now we just do.
I have a nanny for a couple afternoons now and it makes a big difference. Our house isn't a complete disaster and I can get a tiny bit if time to myself. DH and I got a kid free Starbucks run in yesterday which was so great.
We have no family support except when my parents come to visit so having kids has been hard on our marriage. It was only 20 minutes yesterday but it made a difference.
It helps that our girls have been big, healthy, and good sleepers. I don't know what I'd have done with a colicky baby.

Well... We are only 6 wks in to this 3 kids thing but so far it's gone pretty well. It's taken lots of teamwork and divide & conquer with DH. The biggest thing has been finding time to do everything! I've been trying to fold a load of wash all morning with no success and till bedtime comes I'm exhausted. Realistically I know this will change a bit as the kids get older and the baby starts napping better but right now it feels hard.

Eta: I think the challenges of finding someone to babysit will also lessen as the kids get older. Our parents are willing but we don't like to take advantage of that too much. Friday is our first evening away from all 3 so we will see how that goes. And for traveling we've just done places with our extended families where we have rented houses together and that goes well.

Not sure yet, but I think you have to remember that if you're traveling or leaving kids, your age spread helps. So its not like you would have 3 kids under the age of 3.

We are going to have ages 6, 3, and 1. If we go to leave them later on it would be like 10, 7, and 5. All elementary school but a 10 year old can really help a lot with the grandparents or friend that they stay with. Same thing with traveling, the 10 year old can carry their own bags etc and help with the 5 year old.

What was the biggest/hardest obstacle in your transition from 2 - 3?

We're a maybe three family and as DS2's first bday comes closer, DH and I are trying to have serious talks about permanent family plans!

I don't think we'd "regret" having another, but I'd like to be more aware of what life is like with 3 or more kids!

We're very very lucky to have a lot of family support, a flexible career, and have planned financially to have three kids. So I think I'm trying to emotionally prepare for the possibility more than anything.

The biggest thing is that we both love to travel a few times a year both with our kids and without; and everything just seems made for a family of 4! (Plus leaving two kids vs three kids if we ever travel alone seems like a HUGE difference).

So what is life like with 3 or more? What was the hardest part in expanding your family unit?
