I would say that she (LGA over 9lbs) didn't have trouble. I as a new mother didn't get her in a good position for a good latch and I ended up with a very painful bloody nipple.

DD was 8lbs 0.7 oz and we had problems breastfeeding although I'm 99% sure she has an upper lip tie that never got fixed.

DS was 9lbs 6oz and we had the same problems breastfeeding until I got his upper lip tie/posterior tongue tie fixed at 5 weeks.

DD was 9lbs 6oz at birth and was a CHAMP! The Lactation Consultant didn't believe that I wasn't having any issues as a first time mom, so I had to call her the next time DD nursed and she was so impressed she said "wow, good thing all moms aren't like you! I would be out of a job"
DS was 7lbs 13 oz, not small but not as big, and he was HORRIBLE at nursing. I had all sorts of issues. But, that was totally related to something with his mouth and sucking.

DS was 8'12 and we had no physical problems at all. It was a little bit harder for me emotionally, but overall I'm just grateful it was so easy for us. I don't know that his size factored in to that.

@bunnymommy: that's what I think too. We even had his upper and lower frenulums clipped at 5 days old and, unfortunately, I didn't notice any difference for either of us. Time/growth was what eventually worked for us. Luckily, I managed to get through the really tough phases and went on to BF until 13 months!

DS was 8 lbs 11 oz. My milk didn't come in right away so he was on formula on Day 3 after we found out about his major weight loss, it was a PITA getting him back on the boob for about a day on day 5, but we used a nipple shield on my flat side and he latched well on the other. We've had a great BFing journey thus far with minor minor problems, like a scab here and there during latch changes/teething.

LO was an average 7 lbs 4 oz, but she has a big mouth. Seriously big... She gets it from DH. I think that may be why we had a pretty easy go of BFing.

Hope I'll be like those of you who had an easy time!

@lamariniere: I wonder if his little mouth made it more difficult? What I've read (which is is more anecdotal than factual) is that the reason that BF gets easier at 4 weeks plus is that LOs mouth gets bigger and so latching is easier (easier to take in more of the areolar etc). Who knows!

LO was 8 lbs 10 oz at birth, and even wtih the help of 3 seperate LC in NICU/hosptial, she was never able to latch. She was a "lazy" baby and didn't want to do the work. I ended up pumping exclusively and then switched to formula.

@bunnymommy: I wonder about your big mouth theory. I had terrible BF problems for the first 3 months or so (DS was almost 8lbs at birth) and I think it was because LO has a small mouth AND does not open very wide. Even now at almost 3 years old, if you ask him to open his mouth, you can barely see in it compared to when other kids open their mouths.

Did you find that breastfeeding was easier?

I've read that sometimes problems with pain during feeding (when the latch and everything is correct) can be because your LO's mouth is just too little still and that it improves when his/her mouth gets bigger. So I wondered, if your baby was big at birth (LGA I guess), did that help breastfeeding (because his/her mouth was already a bit bigger?)
