@Emsmems: Too funny, I have the opposite problem - my son is skinny and most pants look enormously wide on him!

@tinyperson: huh. I don't think dresses have ever been a problem with my LO after potty training. Maybe because I taught her to hold her dress up? She also wears leggings or tights under, so she has to pull those down, hold the dress up and go. But she hasn't any problems doing it.

We also double up the pants on cold days, so some days she has to pull down two pants, poor girl. We've only had to use snow pants twice to school this year, but one time was with a dress and we just tucked it down into the snow pants, haha. They take the snowpants off at school for the school day.

eta: or maybe our dresses are short. I do let her wear dresses long after she has outgrown them length wise, because she's skinny and they still fit width wise. I guess at that point they are more like tunics over leggings or tights.

My biggest beef about boys clothes: a vast majority of the "cute" boys pants are skinny fit. My son has always had thick thighs and they are way too tight for him to play around it. It drives me nuts!

@nana87: yeah, my now 4yo started JK in September, so no dresses. She has to go by herself. Also - snow pants are problematic with dresses!

I only have a girl, but surprised about the dress hate! I've loved putting lo is dresses/tunics, partly because they last a long time--lo is long and skinny so she grows longer rather than wider, so dresses just become tunics and then shirts, and have a longer shelf life! lo is wearing 3T or 4T in most clothes but still can fit into some 18-24 mo dresses as cute shirts ;)

Eta to add a pic of my case in point: dd in the same dress on her first and second birthdays!

Button down shirts for boys that require ironing. I barely iron my own clothing. I am certainly not ironing an 8 month old's clothing. I put him in it for one wear and then donate it!

@mrs.shinerbock: Totally agree on the sizing for girls! My 50th percentile 3 year old is about to be in either 5T or 4 in the kids section, especially in pants.

@tinyperson: I 100% agree with the shoes thing. Plain shoes without embellishments are out there, but because there are fewer styles like that, it's hard to shop sales. That is also my biggest pet peeve. I would really like to have a girl shoe wardrobe of like, 1 pair plain navy shoes, 1 pair red, 1 pair brown, 1 pair black, and 1 type of sneaker in maybe gray. Plainish gray sneakers for girls are IMPOSSIBLE to find without paying through the nose.

I have one of both and agree with most of the pros and cons, but am really surprised that no one has called out the sizing on girls clothes as a con. My daughter can wear 2T tee shirts from the boys side, but is in 4/4T for the girls and the shorts are all way too short. My 3-year old does not need to be wearing booty shorts!

I have a 2 year old boy now - con is the lack of options, there just seems to be so much more girl stuff, specifically shoes! There will be half an aisle of girl shoes, and then TWO options for boys.

DD on the way and I feel like she should have cute dresses (esp. for Easter) but it's COLD. I haven't found any newborn/3 month tights, is she supposed to wear leggings? nothing? Help? ;) And there is waaaay too much pink. I've told people if they buy clothes to stay away from pink after I received an entire tote of PINK girl clothes.

@wrkbrk: I was a late adopter, but I've come to realize that I can make my life so much easier if I just stick to a formula that is a pair of pants and a soft long seelved t-shirt. My son also really likes vests, so he has a collection of fleece vests in gray, red, navy, hot orange, lime green, etc.

My son really loves the Gymster pants, they have a soft jersey lining and come in basic colors as well as fun colors every year. I just pick out a few pairs in his size and buy some coordinating long sleeved tees and he's dressed. I love putting him in orange or red pants because he's so easy to spot on the playground!

Girls-pros - lots to choose from. Really fun special occasion dresses.

Cons- so much glitter and pink and characters. I find myself in the boys section for basics pretty often. Also why even make dresses in 6-12 months?

@ShootingStar: Target's selection for toddler boys is bad. It seems to improve when you start getting to the big boy size 4 and on. Cat and Jack improved the boys clothes a bit. Circo had some great basics though. What's frustrating about Target is that well over 80% of the floor space in the kid's clothing section is girls. They really need to work on getting more boy clothes represented.

I have boys. I agree on the khaki, cargo, and navy. I don't know if it's a seasonal thing, but for boys this winter, it's all plaid. Both boys wore plaid for Christmas. It seems like their dress up clothes are either plaid or check. Target's Cat and Jack line has sweatshirts. It feels like such a rarity to see those for boys.

I'm relieved to only have boys because all of the accessories for girls seems so daunting and time consuming. My boys are easy to get dressed in the morning. I rarely have clothing fights with my big kid unless he wants a character on it.

@T.H.O.U.: @PinkElephant: I bought my kids matching Christmas outfits and DD's dress drove me bonkers. It had this little crinoline in it (because a 4m old needs crinoline??) and it was so hard to hold her because of the poofy-ness and to get her in the carseat. And then it seemed super awkward because it kept riding up and her legs were bare, but tights for that age are almost impossible to find. I kept feeling like I was doing something wrong, lol.

I have a boy, and I have no problem finding things in color. I just placed a Gymboree order that has a pair each of orange, red and khaki pants, plus a graphic long sleeved tee that coordinates. There are no sports graphics or words, just animals or nature scenes.

I don't own a single black item of clothing for him, even though I see them on a regular basis at Gymboree and the Children's place. I think the key to dressing them is to stick to one brand and buy outfits from a collection. I buy my son, for example, a pair of red pants. Then I'll get him a shirt from that same collection. It's really easy.
