@hilsy85: haha yep, if only our babies could be as easy as Sherry makes Clara out to be. When A was younger, he used to nurse every 2 hours during the day. That was back when he was sleeping all night. I've tried to get him back to that, but it doesn't work. He's too interested in being a busy body now. He has no time to nurse these days. lol

@mrskc: So true, I know I am totally creating worries for myself :) I WISH L would be as adamant as Clara seemed to in that link about eating often--I really think that's key for sleeping better at night, but I have a tough time nursing him as it is, never mind trying to do it more often.

@hilsy85: This is A too. He doesn't really cry. I just end up feeding him every 3 hours. Sometimes he does get cranky to nurse but not always. I think if I waited until he cried, he could probably go 3.5-4 hours between nursing sessions and then I worry he's going to wake up even more at night to nurse. I think, as with all new things, when the time comes, you'll know what to do. Or you figure it out. I find that with each new stage, I start stressing about what I should be doing or how are we going to transition and I always figure it out and it's no big deal.

@mrskc: OMG can you say jealous about Clara's sleeping!

The feeding thing is interesting though...she said that she basically fed Clara whenever she cried for it, which was every 2 hours...LO doesn't really cry, but I just feed him every 2.5-3 hours anyway. It seems like in Sherry's case, it was easy to tell when she was ready to drop feedings, because Clara didn't cry for it. I wonder if I'll be able to tell with my LO--maybe he'll just refuse to nurse? I'm afraid to let him go for hours until he cries that he's hungry because he's so skinny already...and then he might only end up eating 4 or 5x a day. but maybe I should try that? Anyway, that's a huge segue from the point of this original post but thanks for the link! Gives me something to think about :)

Have you read Sherry's BFibg and weaning experience? She talks about weaning at 1. Although I do want to punch her for having a baby that slept all night from the start. Haha

http://www.younghouselove.com/2011/07/14-months-of-breastfeeding/

I wonder about this too. I imagine it will be a gradual process.

I wondered the same thing too! But as pp's have said, our LO also kind of dictated how he wanted to decrease his formula intake. When he began solids, he was still on about six 6oz bottles of milk a day (whew! 36oz!). Gradually it became less and less feedings (it's weird how i can't remember how it happened now....) and now at 11months he drinks about a total of 25 oz or less of formula a day, roughly 3-5 smaller feedings, in a cup, during meals and snacks.

unfortunately LO isn't into water at all right now, so I'm working on that! i really would like him to drink water!

By 1 year, assuming that they are eating a good amount of food, they only need to drink 16 oz of cow's milk a day which is how you would end up having fewer nursing sessions. You can gradually start dropping one at a time. I could never get my LO into a sippy cup so we went straight to a straw cup at around 1 year. By 18 months she was drinking from an open cup.

@hilsy85: I think so, but I don't really track her water intake. She gets it for meals and it's always out while she's playing.

@hilsy85: Yes, I haven't kept track of how much it's increased since we always offer water at every meal, but now we also keep a straw cup out while she's playing and she'll grab it and drink whenever she wants to.

Yep, we weaned onto whole milk and cut feedings at the same time.

We started mixing the milk into the formula in her bottles at 11 months old, decreasing the amount of formula by an ounce each day. We also took her from 4 bottles a day to 2.

At a year old, she gets 8oz of milk in the morning and 8 before bed (ped said he wants her drinking 16-20oz a day) and she drinks water during the day. She definitely started drinking more water as her milk intake decreased.

@mrsjazz: yes very helpful! So it sounds like for both you and @Weagle, your LOs just stopped drinking as much (whether from a bottle or from the breast). So I guess I need to stop worrying and just let LO tell me when he's ready (hopefully not for a while...).

Did you find that their water intake increased as their milk intake decreased?

I've been following LO's lead. When we started solids she was still nursing often and took three 5 oz. bottles of breast milk while I was at work. Eventually as she worked her way from 1 meal to 3 meals a day her milk intake decreased.

At 1 year she nurses morning and night and has 8 oz. of breast milk (2 bottles/straw cup) while at the nanny share. I started sending less only after seeing what she would leave in her bottles. The nanny would send back the milk she didn't drink so I could see and adjust as needed.

As far as milk, I may introduce it, but do mixed straw cups of milk & breast milk until I'm ready to stop pumping my once a day. I'm going to continue to nurse in the morning and night.

I hope my long answer helped :P

I pretty much followed LO's lead. At 10.5-11 months she dropped from 4-5 nursing sessions plus a bottle of pumped milk to two plus the bottle. She doesn't seem ready to drop the first feeding or bottle, but I think she could take or leave the mid-day feeding. After her first birthday (two weeks!) we will start switching to soy milk with lunch to drop the middle feeding. Once she gets the hang of that we'll stop doing the bottle and give her milk with dinner. We'll stick with the morning feeding as long as she would like.

I'm kind of confused on the whole transition from breastmilk/formula to solids/regular milk. Right now (LO is 6 months), I know solids should NOT be replacing breastmilk at all. But let's say he weans/I wean him around 1yr...how does the transition go from nursing 6-7x a day to drinking milk out of a cup/sippy a few times a day? At what point did your baby's breastmilk/formula intake decrease, and how did that change happen? Is that something I control, or do I follow LO's lead on it?

Also, I may end up nursing past 1 year, but for the sake of the questions, let's just say LO stops having breastmilk and switches to cow's milk or some sub at 1 year old :)
