My son turned 3 just after the baby was born, and I got lucky, my newborn was incredibly easy. My son is independent enough that he doesn't need mommy all the time and the baby is usually patient. I was expecting things to be much worse but have been pleasantly surprised so far. Of course there are days when they are both crying, but I try to console my son first before tending to the baby.

It's been a whole lot of doing what our toddler wants to do so there are no meltdowns and the day flows nicer and I can get things done. She has been eating like complete garbage but it's about survival right now since I'm still exhausted and sore. She's watched too much tv as well. I just figure it's temporary until we can get in a routine in a few weeks once I'm feeling better. Let the house go a little bit, and ask others for help if you can.

So far it hasn't been too hard (challenging- yes, impossible- no!) because my #2 is still in a sleepy stage. When he wakes up, we'll muddle through somehow. Just like when #1 was new, I don't hold very high standards and I try to keep things like meals as simple as possible. I don't do too much with the house until my husband gets home, and I make sure to take a nap with the baby when my toddler has nap time.

It helps that my #1 is pretty independent (26 months), I can distract him with his train set, a snack and tv, or books when I need a few minutes. The main thing is that I make sure that the infant is in a safe place when I cook or go to the bathroom (showers unfortunately have to wait until my husband gets home). I don't trust the toddler with the baby in the rock n' play, so I have a couple secure places around the house to stow him or I wear him (a lot!).

How do you go to the bathroom? Cook dinner? Prepare meals for the toddler?

I have a 2 yo (who needs to be rocked down for naps and doesn't STTN consistently) and am expecting #2 in 6 weeks.

Am worried because I had a hard time managing my time when my first was born (didn't wash my hair every day, didn't brush my teeth until the evenings most days....I was a mess)

Would appreciate any tips.
