Smaller. I'd go for a larger handbag. My tote has a cross body strap that I can use for hands free too. Hands free would be useful with toddlers.

It all depends on where I'm going and for how long.

When I go to work (DS comes with me) I bring my Skip Hop Duo and a second little bag with our food. (We cloth diaper, so his diapers are bigger so that's a factor, too.)

I do have a tiny backpack for him to pack toys, snacks or whatever if we are going on like an all-day excursion to a park or something. For just the mall/grocery store, I usually don't bring a diaper bag at all. I try to keep a spare set of clothes and diaper in the car for leaks or unexpected changes.

(DS is two.)

I'm actually feeling the need for a larger bag these days.
I carry stuff for me, my 18 mo DS, and DD. Admittedly, I am an overpacker, but it all gets used at some point!. Diapers, wipes, hand wipes, tiny diner placemat, toddler utensil, extra clothes, snacks, sippy cup, wallet, phone, first aid (my kids are accident prone), epi pen. Oh yeah and my coupon folder, haha.

I think the answer depends on your usual purse size!

I prefer to carry large tote bags instead of smaller bags, so I still prefer to carry my super big diaper bag.

At 16 months old, it carries more of my bolongings than hers! I will likely switch back to my regular bag again but I like that my diaper bag is waterproof (in case a silly cup leaks).

Much smaller. For the first 8-9 months I used my Kate Spade Stevie. When I realized he almost never needed a diaper change when we were out and about I started using a smaller messenger bag that I had pre-baby.

We're still using a big one at 18 months but I think we'll go smaller soon. I have the same problem and end up digging for what I need. DS got a small bookbag for Christmas and I think we may switch to that.

@MungBean: smaller - DS is 15 months. I can easily feed him whatever I'm eating while I'm out. I usually bring a sippy cup and diapers/wipes. (Most of the time I keep this stuff in the car glove box).

smaller. they need less stuff as they get older. the only thing i leave the house with (with two kids) is a couple diapers, wipes, and snacks. i don't even carry a diaper bag.

I still use our diaper bag (OiOi), but usually leave it int he car. For Christmas DH got me a Miche luxe bag with the intent of using it as a toddler bag. I have used it a few times and it is big enough. I like that it looks like a purse, since it is one.

We switched from a diaper bag (thirty-one utility tote) to a backpack when DD was 14m. This was partly because we were going on vacation and I felt a backpack would be easier. They carried about the same amount of stuff so we didn't really go up or down in size.

I'm trying to see of its worth getting another diaper bag now that Lo is a year old. I'm using the skip hop versa and it's ok but I feel like with snacks, toys, etc I'm always digging around and running out of room. Moms with toddlers- did you find you needed a bigger or smaller diaper bag as your kiddo got older? We don't plan in having another baby for awhile so I won't need to carry around stuff for two.
