@runsyellowlites: so does M! But in that case they are just lapping up skin flora, unless you are really drooly for some reason;)

@Mrs. Jacks: Lol! Tis true, although P tends to think licking across my face when trying to kiss her is amusing!

@runsyellowlites: I take a harm reduction approach. Putting a pacifier in your mouth has a higher bacterial burden than the other things you mention. But of all the things you mention, the only one I do is kisses which would seem to me to have the lowest bacterial burden. I assume people aren't slipping their babies any tongue ;)

@Mrs. Jacks: I saw you comment this yesterday on a similar thread & didn't get around to asking...

I had read about this bacteria colonization on kellymom, but it seems that also kissing on the mouth, sharing a drink, biting a piece of food to make it more manageable for baby could all do this as well? That we kind of all get exposed to this? Would that be right?

Just keep in mind that there are adverse effects as well, especially on LOs teeth. They will get colonized with more patHogenic cavity causing bacteria earlier. Personally, I make sure my girls get dirty in other ways (like having a dog).

Mine didn't use a pacifier, but I would have done this had she. This study is a nice little demonstration of the hygiene hypothesis - nice to see it.

Yup, I pretty much always do this anyway. Too lazy to go clean it off (unless it's super gross) and too cheap to buy those paci wipes!

I was reading about that study yesterday. It definitely makes sense to me and it was really great to see that it is okay and maybe even best to not sterilize EVERYTHING that the baby puts in his/her mouth.

That's interesting! We usually clean off his pacifier by sucking on it, partly out of laziness (unless it's fallen into something gross and I'm near a faucet or water fountain or something). Plus we like to play a game where we put it in our mouths and DS will reach up, take it out and put it in his own mouth.

This article surprised me! We currently wash off binkies when they fall on the floor. Maybe I should re-evaluate??
