It was worse the second time around :( I laid in bed a lot during the first and second tri...I really couldn't get up. I would usually give B a breakfast bar and milk and then turn on Nick jr. It was so bad. I threw up 4-5 times a day until 35 weeks. I would get sick absolutely everywhere, the grocery store, target, anywhere. I was so weak, I could barely walk. With my third, I got early intervention and went on the highest dose of zofran by 7 weeks. It helped so much. I was able to take care of LO's and make dinner occasionally but I still had my days of laying on the couch. I still felt really sick but it was no where near as unpleasant as my second pregnancy.

Honestly, with my second pregnancy, DH had to handle dinner every night. I gave DS a lot of prepackaged food since I couldn't handle making it.

I had HG with my son, and to be honest, if I wouldn't have gotten pregnant unintentionally this time around I don't know if I would have been able to make the decision to "pull the trigger" and pit myself through it again. Luckily, though I had pretty severe morning sickness this time around, it was WAY less severe and of shorter duration with this pregnancy (with DS I was sick until he delivered, this time I weaned off of all meds at 24 weeks, though I still have an extreme gag reflex). This time I had little to no difficulty with diaper changes/cooking/grocery shopping etc whereas last time I couldn't even step into the meat department of the grocery store without vomiting.

I had all day nausea for about 5 months, for both of my kids. I was hoping for it to be different the 2nd time around but nope. For my 2nd one, as soon as it started at about 6 weeks, I called up the dr’s office and told them to see me now to get a prescription for zofran, I wasn’t going to wait around until 13 weeks like the last time. Like other posters said, I also knew what to expect and could apply my experience to alleviate my nausea—like keeping snacks on hand, eating frequently, stocking up on things that I knew I could eat easily. My husband did step it up quite a bit, making LO’s meals and putting her to bed, and tv was definitely our friend (still our friend :P ), but I was still helping where I could with cooking and cleaning, but lots of chores got pushed to the side. My in-laws would always take my LO for 2 days during the week, and it was a welcome break to rest as soon as I got home from work or catch up on other chores. If they weren’t around, I was seriously going to look into hiring someone to come help with cooking and cleaning once a week, it would be a luxury expense but something I was willing to do temporarily until I felt better. I did do Safeway delivery and buying things off of Amazon. Would you be able to stock up now with freezer meals, and maybe your husband can help prep things the night before for the next day so you don’t have to do so much of the prepping and cooking. I too dreaded being pregnant while running after the 1s toddler, and as you are expecting, unlike the 1st time around, there wasn’t as much time to relax, BUT once you’re in it, doing it, you know it’s hard and it is hard, but you also know, it’s one less day you have until your baby gets here, and it’s one more day you made it through, and you will get through it, and it’s all just temporary. And like other posters said, having experience under your belt, really gives you the confidence that this is all temporary.

I didn't have hyperemesis, but I had nasty all day nausea with both pregnancies. With my first (daughter) I was super sick until 18 weeks or so. I thought it would be just like this with #2 and boy was I wrong! With my son I had morning sickness everyday of the entire pregnancy. It was really tough to watch my toddler (my kids are 19-months apart) and I didn't have any help from anyone. I often felt guilty because I couldn't do as much with my daughter as we had done before I was pregnant, but my husband really stepped it up on weekends and helped out a lot. I wish I would have made freezer meals before getting pregnant, because cooking was so hard with my many food aversions. Hoping this isn't the case for you and you have no morning sickness at all!

I didn't have much morning sickness at all with LO1, but this pregnancy was ROUGH for me in the beginning. The low point was when I puked on my poor DD because I couldn't get her out of the way (she was nursing) fast enough. I ended up needing hospitalization and fluids later that day. Do you have any family near by or friends you could call on? When I ended up having to go into the hospital, my MIL came into town and watched DD for the rest of that week, even when I was home, to try and let me suffer alone. (It's hard to maintain much dignity when you're puking and a toddler is pulled up to the toilet next to you mimicking it and giggling. ) She also got way more screen time than she'd ever have gotten otherwise.

As for food, another vote for freezing things, rotisserie chickens, and really bland food for everyone. I don't have to deal with food allergies for LO1, but I DEFINITELY couldn't have stomached the smell of fish.

@as your morning sickness the second time around the same, worse, better? Around the same. There were periods where I felt like it was better than last time, but in reality I think I was just more used to it and I sought help sooner with taking Zofran, going in for IV fluids when I needed them, etc. Unfortunately, HG does tend to repeat itself

How did you handle taking care of your older child while being sick? How did you feed them, cook for them, change diapers, etc?
It wasn't easy - there was a lot more TV than usual, I had to keep a trash can next to the changing pad for the times I got sick during diaper changes, stuck to very simple meals for awhile and my DH pretty much took over dinner, etc.

How did you divide the labor with your spouse/partner?
This is something I think you kind of just have to play by ear, because you never know whether or not it's going to be a good or bad day for you! Just don't stress if the house is a mess. My DH would basically call me on his way home every day to see if I needed him to bring home dinner, which was often the case - there was a lot of carry-out, rotisserie chicken, and sometimes on my good days I would prep freezer meals or stuff that I could just throw in the crock pot.

I definitely agree with @scg00387 that it was easier just having been through it before and experiencing the end result!

@scg00387: I've made pancakes from bananas + baby oatmeal (for iron) and LO really likes, to making and freezing a bunch of those would work. I could also make egg muffins instead of making the egg each morning. Those are good ideas.

Dinner I still don't know. LO loooooves fish, but I'm pretty sure making salmon will kill me, haha.

@Anagram: I would start cooking and freezing now. I couldn't even look at meat honestly, cooking it every day would've landed me over the toilet without a doubt :(have you ever tried making breads? Or granola bites or something? I know it doesn't sound like you have a ton of spare time but it might be worth it. I used a cheapie bread maker from goodwill for months before getting a nice one!

@Weagle: @Bluebonnet: Thanks, ladies. Hopefully it will be better the second time around or I will at least cope better knowing there is an *end*.

@scg00387: The food for LO is what scares me the most. Since LO still hasn't shown any signs of getting over her MSPI, I do a lot of cooking for her--nothing fancy but it's difficult to find breads she can eat that aren't hard (almost all breads have soy oil or lecithin and she doesn't do well with those), so she really doesn't eat a lot of breads. So no sandwiches, no mac n cheese. I cook her an egg and breakfast sausage every morning at 6 am before work and I make a meat + vegetables almost every night. Restaurants are a no-go for her, because I can never be sure about if they use vegetable oil or butter in things. My husband works till 7-8 pm most days so evenings will be all me, even if he starts doing breakfast every day (usually he is feeding LO and changing diaper, dressing her etc in the mornings while I make the egg, because she leaves with me at 6:35-6:40 am for work/daycare). I remember last time, I would feel like I was going to die if I even *smelled* a neighbor cooking meat, and now I'm going to have to continue cooking it myself. Bleh.

Also, she still isn't the best sleeper and I'm feeling guilty in advance because I already know I'm not going to be able to help as much over night.

I did not have HE and never actually threw up but had constant, dizzying nausea for weeks 6-12 with both pregnancies. So, not that long, but just chiming in to say it was exactly the same intensity both pregnancies. My son is really good at playing independently - I read him a million books while laying down, he played on his own, and we basically only ate peanut butter/jelly, mac n cheese, or grilled cheese. I sent him & DH out to eat often, without me. Nothing else got done that didn't have to; DH did what had to be done if I couldn't (I SAH).

Good luck! Hope you don't have the same experience with #2!

I didn't have HG, but I was on zofran during the day and phenergan at night for at least the first 16 weeks with LO1. I lost 11 lbs in my first trimester (and I was at a healthy weight before getting pregnant). I would go to work, try not to throw up, go home, and go to bed at 8pm. I was terrified of how things would be when pregnant with LO2.

The second time around, it was bad, but not as bad. It was mentally easier (knowing it ended last time and I survived). I also didn't feel guilty about taking medicine from the second I felt sick. I also ate better, so I would have more energy and feel better (fewer carbs more smoothies to get fruits/veggies and peanut butter to get protein).

LO1 was in daycare full time, and I was WOH full time so that helped. Also, DH changed every diaper (when he was home), and helped as much as he could for bedtime/bath time. DH and LO ate simple meals (that was all I could stomach to eat or cook), and it was hard, but doable.

I was never diagnosed with HG, but I had pretty bad morning sickness for 24 weeks with my first daughter. I was throwing up several times a day, all day long. It was awful. With the second, I had a few days of nausea, but mostly avoided MS. It was so nice! Pregnancies can be so different.

I had really terrible morning sickness (all day, 24 hours a day sickness) for the first 4 months of my pregnancy last time. I was MISERABLE. I did continue going to work, but I didn't actually *do* much work there, I kind of just sat and suffered with a barf bag on my lap and laid in bed every second I was home. I couldn't grocery shop or run errands for months. I was on the highest pill dosage for Zofran, which gave me all the regular side effects like horrendous constipation. Plus, it stopped my throwing up but didn't stop the horrible constant nausea.

But now I have a toddler and we are TTC #2. So my questions.

-was your morning sickness the second time around the same, worse, better?
-How did you handle taking care of your older child while being sick? How did you feed them, cook for them, change diapers, etc?
-how did you divide the labor with your spouse/partner?

any tips for me? I'm really, really dreading going through all of this again, but this time with a toddler to take care of.

Words of experience?
