Hand washing, hand sanitizer, not letting LO1 touch the baby's hands or face, not taking the baby out in public for the first 2-3 months because there is way too much illness/snow/arctic temperatures. Even so LO2 caught 2 colds from LO1 and she's only 9 weeks old! Ugh, winter.

We wash hands regularly but nothing else. LO2 got a little stuffed nose at 5 days old but never had a fever. Other than that though she hasn't had any problems at all (she's 9 weeks) even though I had two colds since having her and her brother had colds and a stomach bug.

@MrsMccarthy: we took DD2 out early but even if we didn't, the germs would have infested our home because Chloe started preschool when Charlotte was 4 days old.

The first question I asked our ped was how to minimize germs and reduce risk of illness. She smiled and told me you really can't, but gave me a few tips.

We hand washed a lot. It's the first thing we did as soon as we got home, no matter where we came from. We made it a habit for our oldest.

Carried hand sanitizer in my diaper bag

Made a rule that we only kiss toes and belly the belly button. My oldest would come home from preschool and want to another her sister in kisses. She'd immediately lean into the bassinet! "We only kiss toes!" because our mantra.

We washed everything, all the time.

Even with all those precautions, Charlotte caught a cold when she was only 10 days old!

We took DD out to the park with DS early and I made sure to wash DS hands all the time. We also didn't really let DS touch her for a long while-maybe close to a month? We let him hold her after his bath and let him kiss her gently on the head once in a while, but that was it. She still caught a couple of small colds over the winter but nothing serious.

I live in the same area and am about to be adding my twins to the mix with an 18 month old. I'm more scared about the bugs ds1 will bring home from daycare but I think we will really limit public outings for the first month or so at least. When we do go out, I intend to keep them covered as much as possible, either with their car seat covers or by being held close to me in a carrier. Best of luck! I really do wish that people around here vaccinated better.

We did a lot of hand washing and minimal physical contact between LO2 and LO1, but that was about it. LO2 caught a cold when she was 3 weeks old. I guess the younger LOs are always going to be subject to more germs earlier than the older LOs.

I'm nervous about this! Lo2 is due when Lo1 is just over 3, and we're planning on starting her in preschool either a little before that or right around that time. Worried she will be bringing home stuff that is really bad for a newborn.... We are in California so I hear ya on that vaccination thing.

Honestly I didn't take them out that young. It was also hard to keep them separate as big brother was all over him. Luckily, neither got sick. Big brother started preschool when baby brother was 4 months old. That's when the sicknesses started. But really, we've been lucky.

I'm not going to lie, we kind of hibernate when we have a newborn in the house. At least the first four or so weeks. Germs and newborns worry me immensely. I just wash hands and nurse!

Well, Xander continued to go to daycare where he brought back every cold known to man. My husband and him were sick almost my entire maternity leave, but luckily Logan and I didn't get catch most of it. Wash hands and keep that baby close!

I wonder how many people here are actually unvaccinated. I bet it's less than you'd think, unless you're at some kind of school or gathering specifically geared towards the crunchy lifestyle. But I do worry too - I know there are many. I belong to one of the many Swap and Play groups in Portland, and I REALLY wonder about that.

yeah..we wash hands constantly. I have the foaming babyganics sanitizer and O is really good at using it. she had a cold and I was just a nutcase about keeping them separate.

my doctor actually said at C's 2 month today that at this point, if she has a fever, they can keep tabs on her but prior to 2 months would've been a hospital visit/stay. so I'm a littttle more relaxed now, though I obviously would like to avoid her getting sick.

With my newborn, I suppose I would just try and keep her as close as possible, like wearing her. I still worry about my nearly 3 year old, though, even though she's fully vaccinated. We were at a bounce place the other day (thanks, still terrible Northeast weather) and a mom had brought her toddler who had a horrible, nonstop cough. I mean, it sounded BAD. I took one look at my mom friend and was like, let's get out of here! I may have worried less if we were at an outdoor playground, though...

We wash my toddler's hands whenever we get home and we tell her to only touch the baby's head and tummy, not her face. But, its pretty hard. Dd2 caught her first cold this week and she is 8 weeks. We tried our hardest to keep them separate but didn't work. We don't let other kids get too close but again, sometimes you can not prevent it. My nephew was holding the baby and sneezed right on her. He seemed healthy but who knows.

We took my son to the playground today with my one day old daughter and I found myself feeling really nervous when another toddler girl was near him coughing like a maniac. I live in Portland Oregon land of the anti-vaccine. Anyway I guess I'm just curious how other moms out there handle this scenario. Obviously I do not want to isolate my son or become some kind of crazy lady. I do want to protect my daughter though. How are you handling the situation or have you handled it with your children?
