@Goldengirl: sadly yes! I just didn't buy the liners at all last year and got the stonz on a buy and sell for $5! Haha. But I know I won't always be so lucky.

@Mrs. Goose: oh you have to buy boots and liners for the boots separately? omg I'm going to spend more on this kid's winter wardrobe than I ever have for myself

@Goldengirl: yep, I put the stonz over top of the booties and just didn't buy the stonz liner. The stonz went higher up and the attached booties with buttons that came with the snowsuit sucked and let snow in around the ankle.

I feel like the flexible stonz are the best option for a new walker because they cinch above the ankle and you don't have to worry about trying to jam their foot in and having them fall off while they sit, crawl, and fall over in the snow

@ShootingStar: Good point... I think since we use the stroller cover all winter, the fleece suit wouldn't be necessary there. But maybe it is for the car seat, when it's really cold out? Or do you think the primaloft jacket is enough?

@sauerkraut: I don't have a daycare provider yet, so I'm not sure. But as Canadian kids, I'd be pretty shocked if they were kept indoors unless there was a frostbite warning!

@Goldengirl: I think it all comes down to preference.

As for the boots, they're all not created equal. If I had to do it all over again, this would have been the one purchase I should have done in person and not on line.

@goldengirl: Yeah, check your daycare policy. My kiddo is in a montessori program that places heavy emphasis on outdoor time, so they go out if it's possible, and I try to make sure she's got clothes for all weather so she'll be happy and have fun at "school." Have you thought of asking the daycare you'll be using what kind of warm clothes they recommend - they'll have a good idea of what's appropriate for the activities they'll be doing.

@Goldengirl: Sorry, I wrote that early this morning and it didn't make much sense :silly: . What I should have said is that if you have a non-walking child and you use a stroller for extended periods, then a fleece bunting can be useful. But personally, I find them hard to use. They can be too warm for the car and too warm once you get inside, and difficult to take off.

For extended periods outside I like to use our stroller muff. We can walk around outside and then once we get inside we don't have to worry about essentially undressing them. I'd use it with a carseat safe coat (like a fleece) and regular winter clothes. But you don't need the fleece suit and the stroller cover.

@Goldengirl: If your LO is in daycare, I would think they would go out often. Our daycare (even for young toddler room) goes out every single day that's over like 25 degrees. So even if they don't play in the snow, they get out in it and need something waterproof.

@looch: so funny because some of the other replies above say get separates! But yah I already got a one-piece secondhand so that ship has sailed :) It was 20 bucks so I'm not super invested if it doesn't work out. I definitely like the convenience of one pieces overall though, for all clothing.

I assume all baby boots are flexible/soft for new walkers, no?

Aw I love that your LO loves the snow! I can't wait for that!

@Mrs. Goose: omg literally everyone is saying opposite things to me. No fleece suit! Yes fleece suit! Lol :))) When you say you pair the Stonz with the booties... you mean together?

I made a ton of mistakes buying winter gear for my one year old, namely separate coat and snow pants, so I would avoid that combo and get a one piece snowsuit, even better if you can find ones with the fold over hand mittens.

As for shoes, you want something flexible on their feet, so don't buy those clunky snow boots in sizes too big. They can't use them yet. Stonz are a great alternative.

My one year old didn't physically touch or play with the snow, he was too overwhelmed by it that first winter and his gross motor skills weren't good enough where he could walk in snowy paths. Now, I can't get him inside when it snows and he always tells me he loves snow the best.

@Goldengirl: I used my fleecy one piece suit with a hood and covered feet and hands for the car seat and in the stroller for walks daily. It was invaluable.

My waterproof gap snowsuit with booties and hand covers I paired with stonz and used less only because I stay at home and could choose if my kid went outside...she was 15 months. It was often too cold to sit in the snow and she hated it until she was about 17 months.

@ShootingStar: What's the difference between using the fleece suit in a stroller bassinet vs a stroller? It's not still useful for stroller walks? I do have the stroller sleeping bag cover thing that's warm and used that last year without putting too much clothing on him.. so maybe that's enough, making the fleece suit pointless. Unless I end up wanting it for the car seat when it's really cold out, in which case we'd use it a lot... ack!

@sauerkraut: this is what i'm a bit confused about with the other responses saying he won't be outside in the snow very much. He's not in daycare yet, but likely will be during the winter, and I imagine they're still outside a lot (I hope they are!).

I live in Minnesota and have a small collection of winter gear for DD. The warmest piece is this snowsuit, which has open legs and arms that can both be folded over the feet/hands if you want: https://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p/patagonia-infant-girls-hi-loft-down-sweater-bunting-17ptgignfhlftdwnsapo/17ptgignfhlftdwnsapo?camp=CSE:DSG_pg20927_ecom_PLA_452&gclid=Cj0KCQjwoZTNBRCWARIsAOMZHmHimCFbHs6pgOA1B_fk-ZQwRHVHmnUU903kfVQa99IksfNUBRVMfwgaArBjEALw_wcB

I also have some fleece snowpants, warm boots, both a warm and a heavyweight jacket, and lots of fleeces/sweatshirts/sweaters + warm hats and mits for the car. DD plays outside at daycare unless its below 10 degrees Fahrenheit, so all this gear may be overkill for some, but we'll use all of it this winter.

I'd get something in a larger size (snow suit) so it will get you through next year when lo is actually mobile. My kid wanted nothing to do with snow at 11 months, and really At 22 months she wasn't that interested. I purchased a 2t two piece snow suit from lands end secondhand and she wore it last winter and will fit it again this winter at 2.5+ and she is tall (this is actually an item that's awesome for purchasing preloved. typically they are barely used at that age. It has overall style pants and a parka jacket. I actually like the two piece...she could take off the parka and muck about in the house with the pants, or throw a fleece over it if we go out in the stroller and still be able to get out and walk about in the snow without the theatrics of getting a one piece on and off. Lands end end also has foot and wrist cuffs you can let out
Also check out the 7 am enfant stroller blanket/bunting. It is WARM. I have a jj cole also and the 7 am is much warmer. The matching stroller mitts are lifesavers for city living.

When my son was that little we never felt motivated to play in the snow. And we never even needed boots because we carried him or he went in the stroller.

@Goldengirl: I would skip the fleece suit. IMO those are only useful if you've got a baby little enough to still be using a stroller bassinet. If you drive then the fleece suits are too warm when you get where you're going and you're inside.

For DD this year, who just turned one, I got her a North Face jacket with turnover cuffs because mittens are too hard to manage: http://m.shop.nordstrom.com/s/the-north-face-perrito-reversible-water-repellent-hooded-jacket-baby-girls/4673825?origin=coordinating-4673825-0-1-PDP_1-recbot-also_viewed2&recs_placement=PDP_1&recs_strategy=also_viewed2&recs_source=recbot&recs_page_type=product. That jacket is warm but car seat safe.

We also have a stroller bunting from JJ Cole and I might get her some fuzzy boots purely for warmth, not snow protection.

Thanks everyone! Lots of different options to consider. I actually picked up a snowsuit secondhand today that was a good deal. It has detachable booties, which seemed useful. I'm tempted to get a fleece suit too because they're not too expensive at Old Navy while they're having a sale... but wonder if that's overkill?

I have two Dec babie! My first will be 3 this winter and she still hasn't put on a snow suit. She just never played in the snow that much to really need one (nor snow boots). I think this is the first year she'll be needing both. For daycare runs I'd just put her in normal clothes + a warm fleece and throw on jacket getting in/out of the car. We also didn't use a stroller that much so any bunting things weren't really needed. Def lots of hats and long socks!

I agree that most kids that age will not be too interested in playing in the snow. I prefer the coats that are 3-in-1 and the bottom one is thin and good for the car seat. Just take the top layer off in the car. For snow pants, either a 1 piece or separate pants. They won't want to be out there long so at that age it really doesn't matter. I would get a good 3-in-1 coat and second hand snow pants to save money. invest in a good snow suit next year!

My kids have all turned 1 in early winter/late fall. Even if they're walking, they haven't been interested in playing outside in the snow for too long at one time. We have a Columbia one piece suit (I think the bugaboo) that is both a fleece part and a waterproof outer part and it covers the foot although that is kind of a wrap so it isn't ideal if they want to walk around in the snow a long time (water seeps in). Also my toddlers are constantly tearing off their gloves and hats so we don't stay out for long. In the stroller we never had a wrap or bundle thing but we put a lot of blankets around them and that works well.

@Goldengirl: he might not be walking at the start of winter but likely will be later! Plus he'll need something on his feet for crawling in the snow. Stonz work really well for that phase, they have a waterproof layer but are soft soles. The fleece suits are car seat safe and the mec ones fit Huge! Check out local Facebook buy and sells you can get most of it used for much cheaper can they aren't in it long!

We live in Maine and we really like the one piece LL Bean snowsuits with the extend cuffs as we have almost always been able to get 2 winters use out of them, they are easy to put on, very warm and also have decent resale value which helps offset the cost. When LO was around a year even though she wasn’t walking they went outside at daycare almost every day and she would play/sit in the snow. The one-piece suits were definitely easier than trying to wrangle pants, coat, etc. all separately.

The fleece are warm but not as warm as a real snowsuit (same deal as a fleece coat vs. a full-on winter coat), and also not waterproof so not good for real playing in the snow; but fine for being in a stroller, etc. We had a NorthFace fleece bunting that was really nice, but totally different product than a real snowsuit. I loved the fold over hands and feet because it took the stress out of keeping little appendages warm.

LL Bean (and other brands I’m sure) have mittens for toddlers that are really long, so they can be tucked up into a snowsuit/coat sleeve and don’t fall off as easily as regular mittens. Highly recommend finding some long mittens; those were a game-changer for us!

At that age (and almost every other age really!) I keep a nice warm blanket in the car and snuggle that around LO after she’s in her car seat to keep her warm. I mostly would just bundle her up in that to take her into school each morning, rather than trying to get a toddler into a snowsuit inside the car.

@Finfan: Are the fleece suits as warm as a regular snowsuit in terms of outdoor use? Although I guess the issue with them is not waterproof.

@ALV91711: We live in the city so I hope/plan to be outdoors a lot, although we'll see how practical that is!

@Mrs. Goose: I think having a fleece suit + snowsuit sounds like a good idea. How does that work with the snowsuit + boots not falling off? You attach the boots?

@Banana330: So boots are still needed if he's not walking yet? Or only if the snowsuit doesn't cover the feet? I am so clueless!

Are all the fleece suits carseat safe?

For my son who turned 1 in January we bought a Columbia fleece one piece snow suit - it had attached boots, foldover hands, and a hood. We got it used because he needed something warm for daycare (they go on walks every day through the winter) but he wasn't going to get that much use out of it.

If you're thinking more along the lines of playing in the snow and going for walks I might go with snow pants that are big enough you can use them again the following winter, and a jacket that would work for stroller walks with blankets tucked over the legs.

Mec has great winter suits. They have a new down one this year that looks good for the tiny age. Will they be at daycare? A mec toaster suit with stonz booties is what's recommended my local moms for those not walking. Or baby bogs are good.

We used the jj cole arctic bundle me on the stroller with the car seat coat or the mec fleece suit (it has fold over hands and feet and you can use in the car seat too) for walking to and from daycare and the just a snow suit for daycare.

I prefer one piece snowsuits right through the toddler years (LL Bean makes great ones that have extendable arm/leg cuffs so while somewhat $$, they are made so well and each suit lasts two winters)

As for boots and mitts at that age, I really like Mimitens. They're a Canadian company and the mitts have long sleeves attached that go under the snowsuit so they can't pull off the mitts. The booties are the same, they were perfect last year when dd2 was 12-15 months and just learning how to walk. Stonz mitts and boots are also awesome !

My two were end of November and end of December so when they were around 12 months, they each had a snowsuit and a winter coat. We also had a footmuff for the stroller. We don't have a car, so I never had to worry about coats and car seats. We had a lot of coats/snow suits from Gap.

One piece fleece suits are very good. Of course, we must layer them up but the fleece suits really compensate for any mistakes in clothing. The one piece attricute helps because as children move a lot, their clothes ride up or down, so to take care off that the one-piece really compensates.Fleece hats also tend to sit better and don't itch as much as the woolen ones. Lining the stroller with warm fabrics also helps out. They sleep extremely well in the strollers during winters. I read in one blog that now they have strollers with heaters. It's fancy but I wonder if it's safe. Anyway, so yeah, layers, fleece and warming up the stroller should be fine. Canada's winter are of course very cold, I live in Europe so it doesn't snow just as much here.

For my 15 month old last winter. (She was 15 months in December) I had a fleece thin suit with covered hands, hood, feet, she could wear in the car seat and stroller and a one piece waterproof snow suit with covered hands, feet, hood for playing, aka. sitting in the snow (because little little kids can't really move around in the snow at all!). I also covered her feet in stone soft boots for outdoor play/sitting. I love one piece suits for winter. I find them way easier so the boots don't fall off and the snow and cold air can't get to their hands and feet.

MEC has good stuff, as does Columbia brand. My fleece suit was a brand called Cali kid's which looked exactly like the MEC one. She also had a gap one piece snowsuit hand me down that was very nice

Do you normally spend a lot of time outdoors? That is what would factor into what I bought.

Last winter was the first time DS spent any amounts of time being outside in the snow and cold and he was 3. Before that he hated it so we didn't force him to he out there.

I don't think a 1 year old will want to play in the snow long.

We used one of the Hatley brand fleece buntings for our November 2015 baby last winter. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00X60LIVQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1503887701&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=hatley%2Bfleece%2Bbundler&dpPl=1&dpID=51dPvYtOPAL&ref=plSrch&th=1&psc=1

A lot depends on your lifestyle too. We drive everywhere and have a garage so the baby isn't exposed to the elements for very long. A lot of times we just put a blanket over her in the car. The bunting was for walks and outings.
