Yeah ours was compounded in a liquid that we shot up but if I had to mix my own from the capsules I would probably sprinkle it on a little apple or pear baby food on a spoon and just smear it inside the mouth. Then wash down with milk.

No side effects other than the first week was really rough - seemed worse than before - but then it was a lot better.

@goldengirl we did not have any side effects from Prevacid or Nexium (a very similar medication) and my son is on 40mg/day which is an adult dose, basically.

@goldengirl did your ped or pharmacy give you no instructions on how to mix/dissolve the meds? I would be very cautious until you have excellent instructions. I would also recommend finding a good locally owned compounding pharmacy in your area, they should be able to make a compound which may be easier and safer vs. you making it yourself. When my son was on Prevacid, the compounding pharmacy made it for us and we just draw it up in syringes and give it to him that way.

He is on Nexium now which we have to make at home (the medicine is in powder granules and we mix with 15 mL of water). He's 15 months and we still just give it to him with the oral syringes. He is totally used to it and now opens up his mouth when it's time for meds!

@gingerbebe: I read putting it in a syringe can be hard because it dissolves into little pellets that get stuck? I also don't really know how to get his mouth open enough, I'm worried he'll just spit it out. Was thinking of trying with a spoon and water but don't know if he'll go for that.

Did you have any side effects with the medicine like stomach problems or insomnia? I definitely don't want it to make troubles worse. And is morning the best time to take it?

DS1 was on Prevacid - our pharmacy compounded it for us into a solution that we shot into our son's mouth with a syringe once a day. It took about a week to wean off Zantac and for the Prevacid to kick in (during which he was worse than before) but then he was SO much better. As I said before, with our second child, we didn't even bother with Zantac and went straight to compounded Prilosec (our HMO stopped using compounded Prevacid for some reason). Part of the reason was that our first son had been in so much pain with silent reflux that he's always associated eating with discomfort. Like even after his reflux passed he was really finicky about his bottles and eating in general. He was slow to take up solids and self-feeding, he hated nursing, hated drinking out of bottles, and we fought him to drink enough in a day. He's 2 now and if anything is off about his day or his health, the first thing that shuts down is his eating. DS2 on the other hand we intervened right away and he's such a happier baby. Could be coincidence, but I just didn't want to have another child that didn't take SOME joy in eating.

@Mrs Green Grass: my doc has prescribed prevacid but I'm a bit nervous to start it! How old was your baby when you used it? And we have the disolvable tabs but not sure the best way to administer them.. just with a spoon mixed with some water? When I googled I read some scary things about tummy problems and insomnia so I'm a bit hesitant now but really want relief for both of us!

My son had silent reflux and it seemed to act up when I ate dairy or peanut butter. I cut those in addition to adding Zantac. It made a huge difference in the quality of our lives for the first six months. He was no longer in pain every day and we were not constantly worried about our baby being in pain. We were able to wean off of it around 6 months with no issues.
I highly recommend it. The positives far outweighed any possible negatives (there were zero side effects for him)

@Goldengirl: at different times we have given LO probiotics. This is what we do with medicine, but would work the same for the probiotic drops. Take the bottle nipple and put a little amount of formula and the drops (Gerber is 5) and then hold the nipple while your little eats. You don't need a lot of formula in there since you are feeding your baby with an open nipple. Other times I would just put the drops in a 2 oz bottle and once LO finished that entire amount I would add more formula. If he didn't finish the rest at least I knew he finished his drops.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I've been having a lot of trouble mastering the changing before feeding thing because usually when he wakes up, it takes about a minute before he's screaming for food, so I just want to feed him asap rather than have him cry and go nuts while I try to change him! But then that poses the problem of needing to change him after his feed, and by the time I've fed, waiting the 20 mins for him to be upright, and then finally change him, there's not much of a break in between until the next cycle starts again. I am just so exhausted from it all, it's been a challenging start to motherhood!

We kept the baby upright for 30-45 minutes after feeding him. He didn't like his bouncer, so we held him upright or used placed him on his boppy. I changed him before feeding him eliminating the need to lay him flat soon after feeding him since his diaper wasn't super full.

LO grew out of reflux around 4 months.

@winniebee: I'm not really sure what is normal sleeping tbh because he's so brand new! His sleeping is kind of all over the place, at max maybe 2 hours at a time? And then wakes wanting to eat... but I think that's normal?

@paigeface: Was your baby just spitting up or in pain? I feel so bad that ours is clearly experiencing discomfort... yet also nervous about medicating if he'll grow out of it and if it's not doing any actual damage. I wish there was a bit more guidance from our doc but seems like it's really my decision.

@peaches1038: He is eating and gaining well as well, which I guess is why our doctor isn't overly concerned. But I would think him being in pain is still a concern? Or maybe that's harder on me than it is on him, I'm not sure!
I thought of putting the drops in his bottle since I give formula... but was concerned since it's such a small amount of drops that he might not get them all if he leaves a bit at the bottom of the bottle.

DS has reflux and has not grown out of it at almost 13 months. He always ate/gained well so I had to push really hard to get meds for him because he was so uncomfortable and not sleeping at all! Sometimes babies eat more because the milk soothes their throats temporarily but then causes more spit up, so it creates a vicious cycle. He also had a lot of respiratory illnesses and ear infections that pretty much stopped after starting Zantac. I found a great resource at refluxrebels.com

For the probiotic, you can either add it to the bottle or if you're nursing, put some on your nipple before he latches on. And gripe water really helped for us as well. Good luck!

My 3m old is pretty spitty. Like, fountains of milk coming out at times. We couldn't even feed her a bottle the first few weeks because literally the entire thing came back up. I never had this with DS so it was new territory for us. However, she was never upset about it. She's always a "happy spitter".

But I'm a big believer that if baby is in pain, then meds are the way to go.

Ah momma I feel for you! Our LO was so reflux until about 6 months old. We tried just about everything and even tried the medication but honestly for us we didn't see a huge difference enough to keep him on it. Our pediatrician kept telling us he would grow out of it as his system matured and he did. At 6 months he seemed to just stop completely. I know how frustrating it can be but it will pass. HUGS!!!

@Goldengirl: yes, that is why many doctors hedge on using PP1 drugs like Prilosec and prevacid. Zantac hasn't been correlated to any of those side effects, so doctors usually start with that and see if it helps. If baby is sleeping ok and you can tolerate I would run with it. We used meds because our son was not sleeping. At all!

Thanks for the tips everyone. I'm hopeful he will grow out of it. I've started the probiotic drops but found it difficult to get them in his mouth so not sure if anything even went in! My doc said that most pediatric GIs don't recommend medication since it's usually not necessary and could have potential drawbacks like increased risk of pneumonia and gastritis.. so I might hold off on that even though it's tempting. This baby stuff is hard!!

DS2 spit up all day every day. At first he was a happy spitter, then a not so happy spitter. He barely slept (like would sleep 45 mins at night then be up for an hour, then sleep an hour, be up for 2), arched and fussed after feedings and we were covered in spit up all day. We started him on zantac at 6 weeks but it didn't help at all. I cut all dairy. Didn't help. Got referred to a GI specialist at 8 weeks who adjusted his zantac dosing to 3x a day at a slightly higher dosage. We kept him upright after feedings (including overnight I would sit with him upright for 20 mins). I was so discouraged and so sleep deprived that I was begging the GI specialist for prilosec or prevacid....but he said to give it a few weeks time. He was right. At 10 weeks, he became a happy spitter again, so the zantac helped there. He spit up profusely until 7 months. I started eating dairy again and it made no difference. The spit up finally started slowing down by 8 months and so we stopped the zantac then. He still spit up until 9-10 months but I remember it improved significantly by 8 months. I don't remember him spitting up ever after a year. I think for our son it was mostly developmental in terms of the actual spitting up (once he was sitting up more on his own it got a lot better and once he ate substantial amounts of solid food and drank a little less milk it got even better). I'm not sure when we could have stopped the zantac but I didn't feel comfortable doing that given how uncomfortable he was as a newborn.

@goldengirl I know you are FF but look into paced feeding (the recommended way of feeding a BF baby a bottle) - it's a "slower" way to feed that might help.

I think most doctors will normally start on Zantac, then move to a PPI drug (i.e. Prevacid, omeprazole, or Nexium) if the Zantac is not getting the job done. If those do not work, I'd strongly consider at least a few days' trial of a hydrolyzed formula (Alimentum or Nutramigen).

DS had silent reflux and it basically made feedings a battle -- he was very clearly in pain. Thankfully our ped was willing to medicate; we started with Zantac but quickly moved to Prilosec. Once he was on the proper dosage of Prilosec, he was a new baby! He was completely off meds by about 7 months -- once he started sitting up full time. When we supplemented, we used Gerber Soothe and we also used their drops in bottles.

@Goldengirl: oh, mine was nursing every 45 minutes or so- we spaced it out to 2-3 hours. Sounds like you're doing what you can! Fwiw I really resisted the medication because my son was gaining weight like a champ. In the end our pediatrician felt pretty strongly that he was in pain and we should try it to address the colic symptoms. He was/is like a different baby.

@Goldengirl: Our pediatrician selected Zantac. We just filled the prescription that our doc told us to. Since DS reacted well to it, we never had reason to look further.

@catomd00: sorry what is FTT?

@T.H.O.U.: ours is gaining as well and lots of wet diapers. But I can see he's so uncomfortable all the time :(

@Silva: I try to slow him down when he eats and burp frequently but it's hard to change the pace of when he eats because we're feeding on demand... he eats every 2-3 hours and will scream and thrash and cry bloody murder when he's starving so I'm not sure how I could make him slow down.

@MrsADS: yah I'm leaning towards medication, just not sure about Zantac vs Prevacid

@MrsKoala: what did you have him on? Are there any side effects with the meds?

@lilteacherbee: how did you choose Zantac vs the other types of drugs? I'm not sure the difference. Did it cause any negative side effects?

@Shantuck: same question as above re: Zantac!

Thanks everyone!!!

After getting on Zantac, DS was like a new baby. It took a week or so to kick in, though.
