My baby brother had them right above his butt. My mom was paranoid that someone would think he was being abused! They eventually faded.

My little sister had them, and when she went to pre-school (15 yrs ago), the teachers called my parents because they thought she was being abused! Luckily, my parents had documentation from the pediatrician about the spots!

My daughter has them too. She's bi-racial and I worry just the same. My in-laws changed her diaper a couple of weeks ago and expressed concern. I feel the need to warn everyone (family, daycare provider) about them. One of them looks just like a big bruise on her bottom. Her doctor told me most of them fade/disappear by the end of their first year but even if it's longer- I am just glad they're not painful.

I've heard of them previously and I was rarely around babies. Anyway, our babe still has them at 9 months old and doesn't look like they will go away anytime soon. I was surprised how many raised eyebrows or questions I got! :( I thought everyone knew about it...especially living here in Hawaii where there are a lot of Polynesians and Asians.

Haha. I always thought the term "Mongolian" was a weird way to describe the discoloration. It really threw me off when I saw it on E's butt when she was a few days old, but thank goodness for Google!

@COASTINGANON we were all born with them too....mom never told me when they faded, but like you we don't have any direct asian roots. Mom is Polish and French Canadian and Dad is Peruvian. But, it wouldn't be surprising since ancestry is generally linked from one continent to the next.

I had one when I was younger and so did all of my sisters. Mine faded when I got older, but one of sisters didn't fade until she was 12. It wasn't a problem except at daycares. My mom would always have to explain what it was, etc.

LittleG has one on his butt that looks like we pressed our thumb into his lower back and bruised him. He's 2.4 and I hasn't faded a bit. I was alarmed th first time we saw it when haws days old. We just made sure to let his caregivers know it was there.

Interestingly enough, I'm English, German, Polish and Russian...my husband is straight off the Mayflower on both sides of his fam....who knows where the 'Mongolian' came from!

My son is black, italian, native american, puerto rican, german, dutch. Anyway, he has a mongolian mark on the back of his neck and on his butt. At first i freaked out when i saw it in the NICU, i immediately though the nurse bruised my baby and i questioned it. Here to find out like you siad about, it is common with certain ethnicities. As like you, i was definitely a concerned mother.

RJ has them all around his ankles, on his butt, and all the way up his back up to his shoulders. Some of them actually look like fingerprints along his sides so they could easily be mistaken for bruises from someone grabbing him too hard...!! And of course, around his ankles...! But everyone at the pediatricians are familiar enough with asian babies that they comment right away that he has a lot of mongolian spots. They've faded since he was born, but they're still very noticeable and all over. I've heard it can take several years for them to go completely away.

My LO has it all over her butt, shoulders, hands and ankles. My nurse friends joke about calling CAS on me but they know that's my LO is "Mongolian". I don't worry about it because a) they'll go away and b) when I explain what it is, people are often interested. No strangers have been close enough to her to see then, too.

My LO has it as well but only on her butt so no ones sees it. She also goes to daycare and they haven't said anything so they must be familiar with it. I hope they do go away some day though.

mymongolian spot covered my entire butt and looked like a big bruise. charlie only has a couple of small spots so they look more like bruises than if he had one big spot like i did. i do wonder if people might think that its a bruise, but other than the people at daycare who have never mentioned anything, i dont think many people will see his butt!

My LO is 6 months old, and he has dark spots on his butt, back, and shoulders. They are Mongolian spots -- benign, flat, congenital birthmark blue-ish in color that is prevalent among East Asians, Polynesians, Native Americans, and East Africans. My little sister had it as a baby too, and it took a few years before the spots went away. According to wiki, it is normal for it to take 3-5 years to disappear.

The mother in me is worried about what other people will think of his Mongolian spots as he gets older. Will people think that the spots are bruises and assume that we are abusive parents? Will kids point out the spots and make fun of him?

Have you heard of Mongolian spots? Does your LO have a birth mark in a unique place?
