My daughter has had a montessori nursery and home since birth. It fits very well into our highly uncluttered lifestyle - she doesn't have a ton of anything, so even if she dumps it all out, it cleans up well. And at almost two, she's starting to clean up on her own.

For instance, our living room has a bunch of book cases, and the lower two shelves of each one have her stuff on them. Usually one item per shelf. So, a big puzzle on one. A wooden xylophone on another, and a box of wooden blocks on another. With things like puzzles, I have a few that get rotated. Her room is similar - a small number of high quality things. I notice that she gets bored with any amount of toys, so I see no reason to have a ton. She's more into imaginative play these days anyway - which requires very little.

Another important part of montessori is empowering children to make decisions in age appropriate ways. For instance, my daughter's shoes are all in a box on the floor. She picks out her clothing (from a few choices that I offer), then I tell her to go pick out a pair of shoes and bring them to me to help her get on. We do a lot of little things like this - as a part of building a sense of responsibility in her.

We have open storage and at age 2 she's much better at not yanking stuff down and if we are with her she will put things back on the shelf. We have the expedit in her closet with four baskets and the rest books and a small bookshelf with other toys.

I'm curious too. We are working on transitioning A's nursery to montessori style, but he is only 15 weeks. So it'll be a bit different. I think one of the main ideas is to show that everything has a logical and easy accessible place to it things away, and that there aren't a lot of "toys" available at one time.

For those of you that have a Montessori style toddlers room, at what age did you introduce it?

I'm interested in making DD's room Montessori style, but I'm curious about the potential mess. Her playroom has all of her toys, books, table easily accessible to her and she throws everything around. Books everywhere, Duplos everywhere, snacks everywhere. I was about to put up a low hanging rail for her play kitchen utensils and decided not to do it because I know she'll just try to hang on it.

Am I just starting too young? Will it be different if it's just her room as opposed to a shared playroom/family room? Any advice or comments highly appreciated!
