well there are 40 weeks in a pregnancy. If you do the math it seems a bit off because we all think of 4 weeks in a month but really that is only true of February. Every month aside from it is 30-31 days. It can be very tricky. I am 30 weeks pregnant and consider myself 7 months pregnant but ofcourse by this logic i would be only 8 months pregnant by week 40. I guess the only way to truly be accurate would be to count from the due date. IE: if you are due on September 2nd like me then the 2nd of every month you are one less month away. So by July 2nd I will be "officially" 7 months pregnant, then 8 months by August 2nd and then 9 months by his due date. you lose and gain days here and there but it's the only way it can be truly accurate.

This has completely confused me too. Because if i count from my LMP, i'm 5 months. but counting back from my due date, i have 4 months and 1 week left, which means i'm not quite at 5 months. If you do the weeks divided by 4, i think it overstates how far along you are. i'm 21 weeks, but not 5 months and 1 week. it's all very confusing.

BUT, most people that ask you don't care. So round to the nearest month. 5 months it is.

@cyneswith: that's a good way of phrasing what i said in an easier manner, lol! counting backwards is the same as counting from your LMP..because some months are 4 weeks, while others are 5. so it's not really 10 months..thank god! :P i'm totally gonna steal that explanation from him (counting backwards).

DH says you should count backwards - as in 8 months is one month from your due date. So I'd be a week shy of 4 months now. I understand now why pregnant women count by week! In that case, I definitely count by weeks completed.

I count in the 40-week way if I'm talking to a recent mom or someone who is pregnant. I give months when I'm talking to guys or girls who have never been pregnant, and I skip the first two weeks.

Examples:

to my BFF: "I'm 38 weeks today!"
to my hubs' BFF: "I'm abut 9 months pregnant."

I tell people in months now. And do it like Running Elley. 4 weeks = 1 month. so at 20 weeks I said I was 5 months. At 22 weeks I tell people 5.5 months. When I get close to 24 weeks, I'll tell people almost 6 months. Hope that makes sense!

I count myself in weeks, but I tell people how far along I am in months since most don't understand the weeks. When I do months, I count calendar months, though, not 4 weeks=1 month.

@sorrycharlie: Funny, we both count the same way and are both due in Sept, but in months I'm 7 months tomorrow!

When I started telling people about the PG and they asked how far along I was, I got blank stares when I responded in weeks.
I've started telling in months now. I'm 16 weeks, so I just say "4 months" like @Jholler25.
People seem to get that :)

@jholler25: I usually tell all non-pregnant people/moms my pregnancy duration in months, not weeks. If I'm in between, I just say "almost 5 months" for example.

I noticed that a lot of people have trouble with weeks, so I started saying 4 months when I hit 16weeks. My husband actually had a really hard time remembering how many weeks and he would get flustered when asked, and usually ended up spitting out, "She's in her second mester."

Yeah, totally not a real word. So he likes the month thing WAY better!

@sorrycharlie: Same here. I'm in my 19th week right now, but if anyone asks, I have completed 18 weeks of pregnancy, so I am 18 weeks pregnant.

I count like birthdays. I have completed 27 weeks today, so I'm 27 weeks pregnant. I'm IN my 28th week, but not 28 weeks yet.

As far as months, my first date of LMP was Dec 20 - so on Jan 20 I was one month, February 20 two months, and so on. I just reached 6 months a few days ago :)

ETA - my reasoning for the months is because some months have more than, or less than, a set amount of weeks. come September 20/25, I'll be 9 months! :)

I only do it in weeks but if I have to calculate it to months I calculate by the number of weeks. 4 weeks=1 month. So, for example, I'd say that I'm 24 weeks or 6 months.

I get confused when someone ask me how many months too, I usually just go back "normal" months though. So I'm almost 7 months along due in October (and it ends up being 10 months in real time.)

In the NICU world we count in weeks, so in months I'm kinda clueless, but in weeks I can tell you exactly what your baby is doing and how they are developing!

Before I started researching pregnancy pre-TTC, I had no concept of how far along someone was if they said it in weeks. I REALLY had no concept that when someone said "I'm nine months pregnant" they might still have a month til their due date.

For instance, I am exactly 4 calendar months from my LMP, or 17 weeks and 2 days. Yet if I go by some weeks-to-months calculators, I'll be at 5 months on Sunday. If I go by another, I'll be 4 months on Sunday.

Which method is normal? Counting months completed (like you would a birthday) or counting the month you are going through (like centuries)?
