My daughter was EBF and refused all bottles, but took to a weighted straw cup (Zoli) immediately at 6 months and held it from the beginning. My friend's son didn't take to a sippy cup until well past 1 though and she just gave him bottles until that time. Whatever works!

We hardly even tried until about 8 months with DD, whoops. We started with the munchkin 360 and she did NOT get it. Tried a cheapie spout cup, and she figured it out around 9 months or so but wasn't super interested. We tried the 360 again at about 11 months and it still took a couple weeks of really pushing it to get her to drink a measurable amount of liquid from it. I probably wouldn't have cared that much but it was a daycare policy to use only sippys, no bottles, after 13 months. We first tried something with a straw at 13 months and she figured it out instantly. Makes me wonder if that would've helped earlier. Oh well. :)

@looch: Those look like the same idea as the munchkin 360. I really want the cup to work but he doesn't seem to get anything out of it when I hold it up for him. Maybe he will in another couple months though. I feel the same though, the goal is an open cup and/or straw, so I haven't tried any traditional sippy cups.

I think the long game is to be able to use a straw and drink from an open cup...that is really what influenced my decisions in what cups I used with my son.

So I either used a straw cup or one with a top that had a valve on the top like these:

https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Avent-Natural-Drinking-Ounce/dp/B00UK5Z4OC/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1499430932&sr=8-1&keywords=baby+cup+with+lip+valve

I thing it depends on the kid!
My dd totally gave up the bottle and preferred sippy cups at 11 Mos....honestly she did it. We just followed her cues. So I wouldn't worry if it didn't happen until later or if they don't have any interest in a cup until older....

We used these. They are Take and Toss from Target. I probably bought fifteen different cups and then tried these on a recommendation. Our first really got it around 10 months. Our second was really fast with cups and everything else.

@Goldengirl: I taught DS1 squeezing the take n Toss straw cups and he hated any cup with a valve so he learned with the TT cup here:

Tommee Tippee Trainer Flippee Straw Cup, 8 Ounce, 1 Count (Colors will vary) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M2UYK24/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_xBVxzbTFQMZE2

And then he used the Zoomi cups:

nuSpin Kids 8 oz Zoomi Straw Sippy Cup, Safari Animals Style https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HIOSM1Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_5CVxzbV6V3YFJ

Those don't have any valve that makes it hard to suck.

DS2 couldn't be taught to use a straw - he let it all dribble out of his mouth but just got it one day. The valve cups - they work if you bite down on the straw while you suck which is natural for babies, but not for adults. DS2 can suck down a full cup of milk in 2 minutes in that weighted straw cup!

@gingerbebe: Thanks, glad to know it's not always so early for all babies. We have the munchkin weighted straw one as well but he hasn't gotten the hang of it, and I find it hard to suck water out of it with the valve. Was thinking of trying a take n toss straw cup so I can squeeze it a bit into his mouth... even though there aren't any handles so I doubt he'd be able to hold it for a long time. So many cups to choose from!

@Goldengirl: neither of my boys held their own bottles and neither understood cups until a year. DS1 only took straw cups and didn't get sippies until almost 2. DS2 understood both but not until a year. It literally just clicks one day.

DS1 used the Tommee Tippee straw cups and DS2 favors the munchkin weighted straw cup. If they are taking a sippy these days it's just the Take n Toss ones.

@Goldengirl: DS held bottles and cups fairly early - 6 months or so. BUT he would not drink out of a cup for what seemed like forever. Six months of trying different brands before he finally took to the weighted straw cup at about 13 months. Of course now (19 months) he uses all cups without issue, so try not to stress about it!

My son was EBF - we started offering him water around 7 months but for a loooooong time he didn't get it. He got the hang of a weighted straw cup first but it was probably 10 months, maybe later? He was in daycare, probably 13 months, before he would hold his own sippy cup, for the longest time when he was thirsty he would just hold it out to the nearest person and yell urgently until they held it to his mouth.

@Goldengirl: I offered a cup at mealtimes sporadically from nine months on, usually with water. We tried straws, regular sippies, 360s, soft spouts on his usual bottle, etc. I removed any valves to make them easier to drink from. There were times I thought he was drinking something, but it never clicked. After he turned one I tried putting WCM in the 360 cup and when he got a little sip his face lit up like OH! There can be good stuff in these! He likes water now, but at the time I guess it was unexciting, lol.

@Goldengirl: We use the Take & Toss spout cups, he still can't use a straw. He's used to tilting his bottles, though, so that wasn't a new skill. Since your son doesn't hold his bottles I'd probably keep pushing a straw cup so he won't have to tilt it.

My son was EBF but got bottles when I was at work, so very frequently. He still used bottles until he was like 11 months ish? But only for breastmilk. We gave water in a sippie. I found that it just took a LOT of practice and him eventually picking up those skills! I would try a cup with a soft spout, my son took to that easier and then as he was older, he could handle the straw cup better.

Now at 22 months I think he's still a bit behind with drinking - his daycare teachers have said he is behind the other kids with using an open cup. But we're practicing a lot and it's already better than it was a few months ago. So, just practice practice practice. Eventually 1 day he will stop chewing on the straw and actually suck on it!

@superkate: were those the take n toss straw cups? I was thinking of getting some, although they said 18+ months on the package which made me wonder if they're way too advanced for him. I wish he'd hold his own bottle too but totally lacks the coordination, I can't imagine him even knowing how to tilt it up properly! Maybe I should try though...

My LO was holding his own cup around 4 or 5 months, so having to hold his own cup wasn't an issue. The handles on the Munchkin cup was a little confusing for him at first in addition to getting the hang of a straw. After a few days of offering the straw cup at multiple meal times he got the hang of it. He 100% transitioned at 11 months. I think repetition was key and filling the sippy with both water and formula.

We bottle fed so my son started holding his own bottle at about six months, I think he learned it from watching kids at daycare. I thought this would mean an easier transition to a sippy cup but it didn't. He understood how to hold the cup but wouldn't get anything out of it (and we tried about six different kinds).

I just kept offering and he FINALLY got it at 13 months. I think he just needed to be thirsty enough. We also had the most success with the Take & Toss cups, as the liquid kind of trickles out, so he didn't have to use much effort.

My son didn't have any interest in using a cup until just after turning one. I felt so behind when I saw other babies using sippies at 8/9/10 months, but once he got the hang of it we were able to ditch bottles around 13 or 14 months. Our ped had recommended being done with bottles by 15 months. I wouldn't worry or force the issue with your son yet, he is still young!

LO is almost 8 months. He enjoys having sips of water from a cup and finds it fun, but doesn't fully "get" it, and has no interest in holding a cup himself. I have tried munchkin 360 and weighted straw cup with him and he can't get the hang of either although he's eager to try.

Questions for veteran moms!
-When did your LO actually start holding the cup themselves? Is there a specific kind of cup that's easiest for teaching that? He doesn't feed himself yet either, isn't super coordinated... so maybe those skills will happen at the same time?

-If you bottle fed, when did your LO start taking milk/formula from a cup instead of the bottle? Should I be trying to give his feeds in cups even though he can't hold it? The bottle still seems way easier/more practical at this point...

Thanks!
