@Iced Tea: @SweetCaroline: I have a Honeywell and use the ball things @lepamplemousse: recommended. That combo has been pretty successful for us.

@Iced Tea: +1 to your first link. We had so much trouble with crane ones & keeping them clean. We made it part of bedtime routine to fill the tank :p

@Iced Tea: @SweetCaroline: I’ve seen that one recommended before. When I finally replace one I’m going to try this type. My kids rooms are small enough that it’s not hard to humidify the air. I just can’t stand washing them.

@SweetCaroline: Good! They really seem simpler than others, so I imagine there isn’t as much that can go wrong. And the motor being over the water tray instead of under it has to be protective also. I’m so glad I bought these.

@Iced Tea: Yes!!! We have the large one and have zero issues with it. Amazon says I purchased that exact one 4 years ago and it's still going strong.

We also have a massive big daddy humidifier that humidifiers a full floor of our [tiny] house. It has two tanks that hold several gallons of water.

Yeah, I threw away our cranes at the end of every season. Eventually bought one that is fully washable (except the motor, of course).

They are Honeywell. They have wicking filters that you have to replace periodically, which is why I was avoiding this type. But they are so much easier to clean, I really don't care anymore. First, it doesn't get gunky in the same way. Second, you can put the tray and tank in the dishwasher!! We are on the second year with these, and I imagine we will use them for many years. The "low" setting is almost silent, the "high" setting is almost as loud as our sound machine, fyi. Sounds like a fan, so sometimes I just use it as both humidifier and sound machine.

The large one:
https://smile.amazon.com/Honeywell-HCM350W-Germ-Humidifier-White/dp/B002QAYJPO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1546739286&sr=8-3&keywords=honeywell+humidifier

The medium one:
https://smile.amazon.com/Honeywell-Cool-Moisture-Humidifier-Black/dp/B016ZACZ88/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1546739286&sr=8-13&keywords=honeywell+humidifier

@Silva: @Chuckles: same! Especially at the end of a cold when we aren’t using it as much, I have a tendency to forget and let it sit for a week. Then i blame the humidifier for getting gross, not me. :silly:

I love sleeping with a humidifier myself, I wake up feeling better in the winter, but it’s not worth the hassle unless I’m sick. And my younger daughter has eczema that flares up badly in the winter which would probably benefit from the humidifier all winter, but so annoying.

This is supposed to reduce mold and algae in your humidifier. I've used it and it actually works. This ball one is smaller works with all humidifiers that I've used so far.
They also have cute fish one but from the reviews it doesn't seem to fit the opening of a lot of humidifiers.

I just came here to say that I HATE humidifiers and being in charge of them. Nothing else makes me feel like more of a disaster as an adult. I cannot keep the clean/filled/running and it drives me nuts. Plus we heat with a wood stove and so its very dry in our house and the baby is always congested.

@Foodnerd81: not sure of the model. It’s 2 yrs old at this point. We bought the humidifier because we had a 40% friends and family discount before that we Crane’d it up.

@Foodnerd81: I hate to say it but I think distilled water would help. We heat with wood so use humidifiers all winter every winter. We don't have issues with our humidifiers. The only build up we have is just white from hard water.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: also to the pink tinge thing- in my old condo in the city, the sinks would get a similar pinkish residue around the drain only a few days after washing them. My friend and I hypothesized that it was rust from the pipes in the neighborhood or something. But that hasn’t happened in our house.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: what Dyson one do you have? I think I’ll have a hard time justifying that much extra cost when I could probably replace the crane every two years for way cheaper. But I do love Dyson products, just not the price tag.

Our crane ones did develop a pinkish tinge over use, but I wouldn’t say it was yucky. If the water wasn’t empty by the next day it just took two nights. We were constantly filling it up. Same with our Dyson humidifier that just works better and is not yucky at all. If you can swing an upgrade I’d go for that kind.

Following too. We have 2 regular crane ones and you're right, if I skip a day of refreshing the water I get the pink slime. I do bleach at the end of the winter season when I pack them away. And sometimes I'm better than not about vinegar weekly (right now we don't have any vinegar so they're sitting around waiting to be cleaned...). But it seems like there should be a better way.

I have three crane cool mist humidifiers- two animal ones for the kids and a drop one for me. They work fine but they are so annoying to clean. And if I’m not right on top of it and forget for several days they get really gunky- this kind of pinkish orange slime coating in the bottom and in the area with all the crevices that the water/ mist comes up from.

So 1) I’m wondering if I’m doing something wrong since people generally seem to like these ones. Do people really dump out the water every day? Clean weekly on the dot with vinegar? Is there some short cut I’m missing? Do you use distilled water? That just seems wasteful- when we have colds I fill up all three almost every night. Tips for cleaning those crevices where gunk builds up easily and quickly? How long should I expect these to last? The first one we got is probably about 4 years old and sounds like it’s struggling. From reading online I bet I got water in the motor. But the other animal sounds and works fine but gets grimy so quickly.

2) favorite humidifiers that are easy to keep clean and low maintenance? I think I need to replace at least the struggling motor one.
