@Sammyfab: we have a video monitor- couldn't survive without it! She's definitely awake, eyes open, but from when I get out of bed, where the monitor is plugged in, to when I get to her door, she quiets down again!

@mjane: I totally agree with turning the monitor off! Actually, the only time we use a monitor overnight is when we are sleeping away from home and our LO is in a separate room across the house...even then I only turn it on after 6:30am. He's much older though.

@Foodnerd81: I'm guessing you don't have a video monitor and that's why you were waiting outside her door? I agree with others that if it's just fussing, then you should just let her be. I have to say that the VM was our best investment ever. My LO is a super loud sleeper who yelps, cries out, moans, coughs, etc. in his sleep. Without the VM I would think he is awake when he isn't. Conversely, he's suuuuper stealth when he wakes up so I would never know when he's actually awake without the VM.

@Foodnerd81: M has been doing this thing where she randomly makes noise in her sleep. She sometimes sounds like a cat meowing! But she stays asleep. It is so strange.

@Foodnerd81: I agree not to go in when your LO isn't really crying. Even with crying, I try to wait 5 minutes (unless he's really hysterical or it seems like something is actually wrong), and sometimes he'll go back to sleep. But for whining or other fussing noises, I think try not to interfere, your LO is probably working on falling asleep on her own.

@mjane: haha- yes to the "HOW DO YOU NOT HEAR THAT?????" I may leave it on silent tonight...

@.twist.: I read it the way you meant it :)

She's taking a great nap now so that's good at least. And it ate my breakfast, took my shower, and am back in bed resting until she wakes up.

It's nice to hear you guys agreeing with me on holding off on feeding her. Dh thinks its slight hunger pangs waking her but then her being too tired to stay awake and cry about it. But really this child has never been shy about letting me know when she needs me. It really sounds more like she's struggling to fall back to sleep. Poor baby- I know how that goes!

@Foodnerd81: Do it! You won't regret it. Our monitor broke and I haven't replaced it and I've been sleeping much better! We live in apt. so we can always hear the important stuff, and I definitely wake up when she's crying, but fussing and grunting and squeaking don't disturb me anymore.

It's also better for my marriage--I used to wake up at every little thing on the monitor--I sleep so lightly post-baby, like you--and then wake my husband being like "ZOMG WHAT TO DO?!?!? DID YOU HEAR THAT??? HOW CAN YOU NOT HEAR THAT?!?" and now we both wake up, because it's actual noise. :)

man, i know about those sleepless nights wondering whether i should go in or just let it be--but even if i decide that letting LO be is the right thing to do because he's not crying and i want to encourage sleeping, it is HARD listening to them fuss/cry off and on. you don't sleep (my husband is a different matter--he sleeps just fine). i don't have much advice, just support, and i think you handled it just fine. however i also wouldn't blame you if you just went in and nursed so everyone could sleep. it's so tough, with no right or wrong.

For whining I would just leave her....she might be trying to put herself back to sleep. She will let you know if she needs you! And you don't want her to get used to you coming in as soon as she makes a peep.

@.twist.: see, I feel like just feeding her would actually put her back to sleep faster. But I would rather that be less if a habit than more. So I'm torn between the path if least resistance (whining? Here's a boob!) and hopefully building better sleep habits (you stay in the crib all night and don't get fed until after 1, 2, whatever). So even if it is teething, wouldn't feeding her be better than Tylenol? She's EBF so not worries about her getting too fat or anything :)

@Smurfette: I do the same thing!

@Foodnerd81: I also say either 4 month regression or teeth. L gets grungy and seems super frustrated when (I think) his teeth are bugging him. I also know that just because you can't see/feel teeth, doesn't mean they aren't working their way out. We don't always do it, but if he's having a seriously hard time sleeping and seems tired but frustrated, we will give him some Tylenol just in case. The few times we have done it, he's slept a few hours after.

@rahlyrah: I don't see or feel any teeth, but I might just not know what to look for. She really didn't seem distressed or in pain, just annoyed that she couldn't sleep (or I was projecting that on her).

@Foodnerd81: If she isn't crying, just whinning, then you got lucky! R made sure to let us know she was up and not happy during it.
What I do now is when she wakes up, I turn the volume off the monitor, and lay in bed and check it every 5-10mins. Yeah I don't fall back asleep but at least I can lay with my eyes closed.

@mjane: we did turn the sound off on the monitor after a while. We share a wall between our bedrooms so we can definitely hear her when she's crying, but I'm always afraid it won't wake me- though in pretty certain it would.

@Smurfette: if it is the 4 month sleep regression, I can handle it (apparently, if there's a name for it I feel better).

Maybe tonight we just start with the sound off. Since having her I'm a really light sleeper anyway.

My only suggestion is that if you have a monitor, you should turn it off! You'll hear her if she srsly cries/needs you. If you're hearing her without the monitor, I got nothing. :/

Hehe.... LO is 7 months old and we had the exact same night. She woke up at 2am and cried on and off until 3:30 :( We only let her go that long because everyone has told us there is no way she should be hungry at 2am! I finally fed her at 3:30 (after soothing, paci, Advil, teething gel, letting her cry, etc etc etc) and DH and I are both total zombies today.

Anyway I don't really have advice except nothing is a pattern until you see it 3 nights in a row - hope last night was a one-off and see how the next couple of nights go before worrying about a strategy, I think.

Sounds like the 4 month sleep regression to me. It doesn't sound like she was hungry, otherwise she would have let you know she was. I would just stay in bed while she whins/grunts.

Just when I think we've got things somewhat settled, C switches things up.

She is 4 months old. We put her in the crib awake around 7:30 and she falls asleep on her own great- huge improvement. Night time wakings and feedings are still an issue but I could live with it.

Now for the last couple of nights, she's really confusing me. She's waking up almost every hour from 11o'clock on, but doesn't actually cry or seem that hungry. At 11 I know sh should not be hungry and unless she is freaking out I won't feed her. From midnight on, I figure if she's crying for a couple of minutes, I'll go, feed her, we all go back to bed. But last night in particular she was just whining and fussing, not crying. She would do it for a few minutes, then just as I would decide ok maybe she is hungry, she would stop and seem like she was asleep. Well, not going to wake a sleeping baby, so back under the covers I go. As soon as I get comfortable, the whining and grunting starts again. At one point it went on for over half an hour, but literally as I stood outside her door, she stopped again. I finally did go in around 3 and she seemed hungry, are for 12 minutes and conked back out. Meanwhile in exhausted because I was up practically all night trying to figure out what to do. She never actually cried during all of this.

So I'm torn. On one hand, of course I want her to be moving towards not eating during the night (not forcing it but if she's ready, awesome). That's why I wait a few minutes before going in to feed her. On the other hand we were all up a lot last night and she probably would have gone back to sleep faster if I put the boob in her mouth, hungry or not. I don't know what to do really.

Anyone had similar nights? Advice? She's done this kind of thing a few nights now but last night was the worst. Or is this part of the 4 month sleep regression?
