I didn't know preschools offer afternoon sessions, until I registered my son for the fall. All my friends do the same MWF schedule from 9-1, but the preschool I wanted only had a spot for the MWF 12:45-4:30 class. I'm a little worried that it will be harder to meet up with my friends for play dates or to get coffee if we all have different schedules. Did anyone else have this problem?

LO will start playschool 2 mornings a wek in the Fall. I am happy it's in the mornings, because even now that's when we do most of our big activities. Afternoons for us are for lunch, nap, and the park.

We don't have afternoon programs where I live but my cousin lives in Wisconsin and they did. She sent her twins to the afternoon program bc it's usually covered in snow and freezing in the morning and the afternoon weather was much better in terms of driving.

She also said the morning programs were mostly delayed or canceled bc of snow and ice half the time :bummed:

I really wanted mornings for the 4's year, but it was full when we registered, so we had to go with the afternoon program. Turned out to be the right option because the class size was much smaller, which is what my son needed. He dropped his nap in August, right before school began in September.

This year they eliminated the morning/afternoon choice and instead offer one session.

At 3 yrs old my boys did private preschool two mmorninga week from 9 to 12. They only do mornings or all day. Our district has preschool for 4yr olds so I switched to that when they were 4. I chose afternoons. Morning are from 8:05 to 10; 45 while afternoons are from 12:10 to 2:50. Both sessions are short but to me getting early for such a short session just wouldn't be worth it. This way we could do a morning acticity and then eat lunch and go to school.

We do mornings. We were originally given an afternoon spot, 12:30-3:30, which I was really unhappy about as DD still naps every day. I pulled her from the program after the first day as they were unwilling to be flexible with the number of days she attended (the program is five days a week but I only wanted her to attend two or three days a week) and I could tell early on she still was going to need her nap!

We put her in a different program, two mornings a week from 9:15-12:15; we just bumped her up to three mornings a week this week now. And she still takes a 2 hr 15 min nap every single day (she's 3.5 yrs old) as without it, she's a nightmare by about 4:00 pm!

We're slow movers in the morning and late risers (the girls don't usually get up until 8:30 or 9:00 if left to their own devices) so the morning has been a bit of a struggle at times, but I figure we'll get used to it as we'll have to eventually!

@Finfan: my big girl (3yo) goes to public kindergarten three afternoons a week from 1315-1515 (we're in New Zealand so our system and kindergarten is different to the U.S. system). This works well for us because we can still go to playgroup and music class in the mornings. Once my girl turns four she'll switch to morning kindy and attend from 0815-1215, five days a week.

We do afternoon from 1-4 and it has it's pros and cons. It was the only class that had a spot so that's why we took it as we discovered this school kind of late and loved it.

We have a long drive for preschool so it is nice that the roads are generally better in the afternoon. DD is also a late sleeper so it is nice not to have to wake her up.

On the other hand, I find it easier to motivate her to leave the house if we start getting ready as soon as she wakes up. Also we struggle to get two meals in her before she goes to school and with a morning class, she could eat a smaller meal and then have lunch after school. The way my work schedule is, I could be more involved in her program if she attended mornings.

Registration for next year just started and I requested a morning class so we will see what will happen. If we wind up with the same time slot, I will adjust! I just think a morning class would help DH (a SAHD) establish a better daily routine at hole.

@Bao: I think because the kindergarten is only one classroom, they have to fit one 3 year old class and 2 four year old classes at different times through the week. Kinder for 4 year old is 15 hours a week, so whatever time is left over from those sessions is for the 3 year old class (give or take an hour for lunch break I suppose!) DD will be turning 4 in May, so she will be one of the older kids in the class as April is the cut off date - hopefully she will be better equiped for early and late starts.

We do afternoons (1220-250, 4 days a week) and it was really hard. He had kind of stopped napping anyway but preschool just exhausts him. And I hate that our mornings are so slow and unstructured. He is also an early riser so the mornings drag on!

My DD will be starting 3 year old kindergarten in a few weeks, and it will be Monday afternoon (1.30 - 4.00) and Thursday morning (8.30-11.00). Its the only session available as its one class, but when she starts 4 year old kinder next year it will be 5 days a week and again, split in half with morning/afternoon sessions.

Last year LO attended the afternoon program because it was the only one that had an open spot. It was actually a new program that they introduced after open enrollment started. He was 3.5 when he started, and the later time helped us adjust.

This year he attends a full day program from 8:45 - 2:00. It is much harder getting out the door with two kids, but it's nice to get a feel for what kindergarten will be like next year. The adjustment last year helped a lot with him being able to handle a full day of school. He never comes home tired anymore like he used to last year.

Is your LO in morning or afternoon preschool? What were your deciding factors?

I really wanted the afternoon class, and luckily we got it. We don't get moving too quickly in the morning because LO sleeps in until 8:00/8:30 and dropoff for the morning session is at 8:25. I'm sure if we had to we could have made it work, but the afternoon really works out great for us. We had a lot of people comment that she's going to have to get used to going all day for Kindergarten, but that's a few years away. A lot can change, and this works for now! Next year if I have the option I'll choose afternoon again, but I think the program is slightly different for 4's so I'll have to see if I have the option.
