Hyperemesis and a wicked gag reflex have been the story of this pregnancy. I'm 11 weeks tomorrow and I've lost 8 lbs since thanksgiving because I feel like shit constantly and puke pretty much all the time. The zofran helps most of the time but I've really been slacking at home (and I'm pretty sure DH thinks im being lazy). It is all I can do to go to work, watch DD when I get home, and go to bed. :(

My worst story was that I was sick the whole time I was pregnant and had the worst gag reflex. I went to slip my prenatal during a meeting and it got stuck in my throat- I bolted out of the room, lost my cookies in a conveniently placed trash can outside of the conference room and then ran for the bathroom. I made it as far as the kitchen before throwing up ALL over the fronts of the kitchen cabinets and finishing up in the sink. I stepped back and surveyed the scene in pure misery before I just started cleaning up the whole mess. so awful!!

Congratulations!

I have hyperemesis and with that extreme and intense morning sickness since week 8. I'm 18 weeks now, and my latest layer of dignity to disappear way throwing up while in the bathtub two nights ago. I've thrown up on the metro on my way home to work, walking made me throw up, breathing too hard made me throw up. I've been on medical telework since November. I was prescribed 8mg Zofran four times a day, and Diclegis four times a day, and given orders to go to ER for fluids if I feel weak. How does throwing up that much NOT make one feel weak!?! I hope you feel much better.

@MrsADS: you might think about trying Unisom tabs (Diclegis is the Rx, delayed release version)... it actually worked better for me than Zofran without the constipation issues. It did make me tired at first, but I adjusted and felt better. It was truly a lifesaver for me. Unisom is cat B, but Diclegis is cat A (because they did studies specifically on pregnant women that did not find any increased risk... I think Unisom would get the same rating if they actually did the studies).

@Anagram I used to have to take Zofran on a regular basis for some stomach/digestive issues I had so unfortunately I am well too familiar with the Zofran constipation. My doctor gave the OK to take Miralax so that is what I am doing. Colace doesn't touch it for me. I also have enemas at the ready :bummed: Buuut... I guess this is better than being super sick!

@gingerbebe: yeah, Zofran constipation is no joke. I had horrible issues last time and am downing colace like there's no tomorrow already although it's not helping much. And I still have my glycerine suppositories and "natural" enemas (non medicated) left from last time in case shit gets real :bummed:

MS started at 6 weeks and lasted until 22 or 24 weeks. Then it came back at 35 weeks. Was on a death cycle between MS, Zofran, and the resulting constipation but Unisom/B6 did nothing for me. The only thing that helped my nausea was fried or fatty food and carbs. I ate a lot - a lot - of McMuffins, fries, burgers, and fried chicken.

@MrsADS: oh, you definitely sound sick enough for Zofran. Have you tried the unisom (tabs, not gels?). For whatever reason, it didn't work for me last pregnancy but this pregnancy it's really helping.

I'm the exact opposite with food. I can only eat bland foods but I feel slightly better if my stomach is half full at all times, so I eat about every other hour. Paired with my inactivity, I'm on track to gain a ton of weight just like my last pregnancy. Last time, I gained 43 lbs, and 32 lbs was in the first 2 trimesters. It sounds insane, but I only gained 11 lbs my last trimester because I finally felt great and exercised and ate well. =(

@Anagram: I am 13 weeks pregnant and still feeling really rough. I am on strong medication and have been since 5 weeks but it made me so horrendously tired that I have finally cut my dosage down and it helped actually. I have not been active at all, I eat a diet of sugar and more sugar, I can't cook and have been virtually housebound because if I leave the house I gag and feel faint. That said, over the last week I have started leaving the house again and have been much better about it. Poor LO has just watched TV every day and DH has had to do most of the chores, it has been a huge strain on us and I feel like this will probably be my last pregnancy because I'm not sure I can do this to myself/us again.

My tips though are to drink ice cold drinks and eat freezies. Find food that is easy/tastes okay yo throw back up. And be kind to yourself. It won't last forever but is such a hard thing to go through, big hugs.

Ugggh, you guys, these stories are freaking me out :bummed:

I'm about 6.5 weeks and have been feeling pretty crappy - not much vomiting but just the 24/7 feeling rotten. The main thing is I just really can't eat. I mean, sometimes I get that sick/hungry feeling and I eat something, and then I feel WAY worse. So, my diet has been like: some dry Chex during the morning; for lunch - one chicken nugget, 4 saltines, half a string cheese; then lay on couch trying not to vomit for 3 hours from lunch; dinner- applesauce cup and another chicken nugget and 3 saltines. I mean, really.

I have only been feeling sick for maybe 5 days and I have already lost 3 lbs because I just. can't. eat. I have to figure something out because I do not have the weight to lose, and I cannot lose 3 lbs every 5 days for the rest of this trimester!!

I am very worried, I have to go back to work tomorrow after the holidays. The only way I have been able to cope is when I am sick, I lay in bed/on the couch with total silence, not moving or talking, and that's the only way I can get through it. I have to do a lot of talking, phone calls, etc. at work and that triggers the sickness for me. So I anticipate the not being able to eat will be even worse. :crying:

My RE gave me a RX for Zofran, I feel kind of bad taking it because I'm not "that sick" but I guess if it helps me get a few extra calories and survive the workday I need to try it. Going to have husband go pick it up for me today.

I've taken a lot of Zofran in the past and it is a great drug, but it gives me very severe constipation/impaction and THAT makes me nauseous as well! So I dread that.

My morning sickness with both of my kids was awful. I think it was worse the second time around tho. I think it was because I was staying at home and taking care of a toddler where as the first time, I was working. Something about being at home made it worse. Getting out and about, it didn't feel as bad.

It was exactly a year ago, I was in first tri with my daughter so this time of year is bringing back memories. *shudder* I pretty much laid on the couch a lot with my son and watched TV. I ate a TON of McDonald's because it was the only thing I could stomach. I threw up multiple times a day up until like 15 weeks. I banned DH from cooking anything smelly. lol Ugh, so awful.

There was one time I was pregnant with my son and I ate some mac n cheese. My DH decided to cook some kind of soup. I got a whiff of it and just started gagging. DH runs into the kitchen and takes the soup outside but it was too late... I was already running to the toilet. And another time... he had to pull the car over so I could puke in a bush. ugh

Sorry you are so sick! But congrats!!

@Anagram: aww, that sucks about the salmon! During my first pregnancy, DH did not take me seriously when I told him the buffalo seasoned chips he was eating in the car were bothering me. He refused to stop eating them until I rolled down the window and started puking. He has listened to me about smells bothering me ever since!

@yoursilverlining: haha, I posted a thread about the Bile High club a week back because I just flew to atlanta and back and I was afraid of throwing up on a plane again. I didn't throw up this time tho--I took a full doze of Zofran and the unisom before the flight and just had 1 moment of clutching the air sick bag, but not needing it. I did have a near hysterical moment where my LOs packed lunch of salmon leaked on my purse making the whole thing smell like fish, but I "solved" that by refusing to get near it and having DH carry it for me till we got home (poor guy). He told me I was overreacting to the salmon smell at first, but my tears quickly changed his mind. :meh:

@Anagram: congrats!!!

If you want a nasty MS story to make you feel better, my worst was around 5 weeks - the flight back from New Orleans for my 30th bday weekend. I had to get more airsick bags from the stewardess 2 times....after using the 3 in our row. :bummed: On a 3 hour flight. I continue to apologize to those jetblue customers. We landed in Boston and had planned to take the bus home (2 hour ride), but I forced my husband to rent a car at the airport, barfed the entire way home and then ran into the house and barfed all over the floor just outside our bathroom because I couldn't make it. Ugh.

I hope this makes you feel better? :meh: pregnancy sucks, but has an awesome outcome.

@78h2o: I'm currently taking 12.5 mgs every 3 hours, averaging 75 mgs a day, sometimes 90 if I take another half tab. My friend was told by her HG specialist that a max dose was 32 pills of 10 mg diclectin a day, so I'm not anywhere near that, but I'm definitely over the dose most women in the US seem to be taking.

@Anagram: Congratulations!!! I'm sorry you aren't feeling well... I totally sympathize.

I had ms really bad with LO#1 and only took an occasional Zofran...it helped reduce the amount I was puking, but I still felt crappy, so I didn't think it was worth it. I'd just had a miscarriage and I was paranoid.

This time around, I had to be able to care for LO, so I took B6/Unisom on my own until I got to my first doctor's appointment at 8 weeks. I took ~20 mg at night (3/4 of a tablet) and about 6 mg morning and afternoon (1/4 tablet). (When I did see my doctor, she said that the dose I was taking was "perfect"). It actually worked pretty well and cut my puking episodes down from several times per day to 0-1x per day. I still had a few really rough days, especially the two times I forgot to take Unisom, but overall I didn't want to die like I did during my first pregnancy! I definitely know that feeling... it is so, so, miserable. I am 19 weeks now and still having some issues with nausea, but only taking 1/4 Unisom at night and none during the day. I'm now getting sick sometimes still in the morning (1-2x per week), but good for the most part other than that. I feel like I am over the worst of it.

ETA: In terms of coping strategies, getting a lot of sleep REALLY helped me. If I slept less than 8 hrs, I paid for it big time in the puking department.

I couldn't do ginger this time around, since I used it so much during my first pregnancy, I developed a serious aversion to it! I did find that lemon things helped... Walgreens sells a bag of lemon jolly ranchers and that helped me sometimes.

I found driving to be a trigger... probably because I tended to drive to and from work at the worst times of the day for my morning sickness. I pretty much had to travel with a bucket in the front seat at all times. :( Nice, huh?

Another disgusting "tip" is that I've started carrying a spare pair of underwear in a baggie in my purse, because I now pee myself a little every time I puke. It's so gross and unfair!

There was a period of time when I couldn't rock LO in the glider without getting sick, so I would sing to her in a chair. She also got a fair amount more screen time for a few months than she ever got before (or since).

I reaaaaaally hope you feel better soon!!!!

@MrsHansen82: that's exactly how my first pregnancy was. Totally sick 24/7 from week 6 to week 17....it started fading a bit the and by 22 weeks I was off Zofran and felt normal. It was a loong road.

I really can't do that again with LO which is why this time, I'm determined to throw more drugs at the problem until I find a combination that works.

I was miserable. It was more the 24/7 nausea that wouldn't go away with anything that was bad for me. I threw up at least once a day, but the constant sick feeling was worse. It was a very dark time for me and I never thought I would get through it. I had times where I didn't even care if the pregnancy continued. Needless to say, I'm so happy that's over with and realize it was just a bad phase. It started to improve around 16 weeks and was pretty much gone by 24/25 weeks. I'm 39.5 weeks now and can eat like a pig!

@Anagram: I'm pretty sure I died a a few times, it certainly felt like it! I tried everything - Zofran helped, but only if I was able to take it the second I started to feel sick. Coping method was pretty much lots of help from my MIL and keeping a trash can in every room of the house since I couldn't always make it to the bathroom in time. Oh, and lots of screen time for L when I was pregnant the second time. I ended up on medication for depression because it was just so bad that I would end up with awful feelings about the baby/pregnancy.
