Could you give him a low dose of benedryl? Our pediatrician has us do that during spring/summer when my 4 year old's seasonal allergies flare up.

I reacted that way when I was younger too. My mom always tells how I had a huge swollen eye when my baby brother was born from. A bite. Nothing ever worked but my mom would ice the inflammations... I still swell up but not as bad

Out of curiosity what blood type is he? I've recently read that type o blood is more susceptible to this and I'm type o.

DD has bad reactions, swelling and blistering and bruising. What has helped with the bites is a Benadryl gel we put on once we see a bite and then I put neosporin on and a bandaid. I feel like baking soda baths help too but maybe that's just in my head :)

Last summer we just had to resort to Deet. We sprayed the yard, checked for water etc and they still swarm.

Sorry to hear this, I deal with this. When I was little my mom would make a paste of meat tenderizer and water (seriously!) and put it on the bites. It did help with the itch. Now I take benadryl when we're at the beach and the bugs are out in full force.

What about a antihistamine for the summer to help with the reaction? Claritin or Zyrtec?

Ugh, this is how I react to bug bites. I don't have any great advice for treatment, as nothing has every really helped me. I've used icing the bites, and prescription hydrocortisone creams to stop the itching. The only thing that prevents them is DEET based bug sprays. I've tried every other type of repellent, and nothing works at all. Depending on your comfort level with DEET, it is the one option that stops the bites.

@travellingbee: I think so! That sounds really familiar. I put it on asap and as needed, I forget if you can use 1-2x a day. I think he said no face but we rarely get bites there. Sometimes I layer that with something like afterbite for immediate itch relief.

@bhbee: I'm telling ya! They thrive here! I have a steroid cream that we had left over from some other rash, that my mom recommended for mosquito bites. Apparently her dermatologist prescribed it for her. I wonder if it's the same thing. It does seem to help, so I think I will ask the pediatrician for a prescription for it.

I hear you my 5yo also has this. It's awful. We have an Rx cream from the allergist that helps a bit, I'll try to add the name. We're also spraying our yard for the first time this year, we'll see if it helps for home at least. I feel guilty spraying but these Texas mosquitoes are something else.

DS2 reacts terribly to bites. Like egg sized swelling, blisters and even swelling so big the skin tears. He currently has 5 and looks beat up. We put spray on him but the damn bugs LOVE him. And he, unfortunately LOVES being outside. It's already so hot here and I'm dreading the summer when it stays above 90 for 5 months. I can't keep the kid in long sleeves and pant- he'll die. Does ANYONE have a suggestion? Or can commiserate? I feel so sad for him!!
