I HATED the Braun thermometer - it never gave a consistent & accurate reading. Exergen temporal thermometer is great!!

We also have the Exergen Temporal scanner from Costco. It's a forehead thermometer and seems pretty accurate.

Ugh, I have that Braun one and it never seemed accurate. We bought this one http://www.cvs.com/shop/product-detail/Vicks-Forehead-Thermometer?skuId=802786 because it was highly rated on Consumer Reports and it seems very accurate but sometimes you need a few swipes with a wiggly kid. It was pricey, but we used our Flu Shot coupon to get it down 20%. The best thing is LO likes it.

We have (and love) the Braun ear thermometer. We have four different thermometers and it's the one I trust and rely on the most. It went missing recently and I was prepared to go buy another. My husband thought I was crazy since we have others in the house as well. I least like our exergen temporal. It doesn't glide nicely (or I just don't use it right!) and the reading is always LOW!

My husband wanted to replace the missing Braun with a no contact like @Mrs. Bird: mentioned, but I was skeptical. So it's good to hear that someone likes them :)

@snowjewelz: I agree with @mrs. bird: that a rectal one is best for little bitty babies. We have the Vicks one that looks like a bulb. It's super easy and quick to use and the bulb keeps you from having to worry about putting it in too far or something. Also, our doctor would take our reported temp taken rectally over whatever they got in the office with the temporal one--he said they are really that much more accurate.

@snowjewelz: def get a rectal one as well! ear thermometers can't get an accurate reading on newborn ears anyway (they're for 6 months and up) & your dr will want rectal temps if LO is running a fever (and they're handy for when baby gets constipated :D )

Ugh, we went through this about a year back because we always took temps rectally. Not exactly ideal for a 4 year old... and LMW always hated it (WJ didn't mind it until he got older). I went through crazy amounts of amazon reviews and came to the conclusion that no non rectal thermometer is 100% perfect. So I ended up just getting the one our daycare has, since that's usually our concern (whether or not their temp is too high to go to daycare). It's the forehead one, and we take 3 and average the 3 temps.

I have the Braun and find the opposite actually...that it reads so much higher than he actually is. We're going through this now...it read at 104.5 when the rectal read 103 for LO. I'm finding that a lot of the temporal thermometers aren't very accurate :bummed:

@Mrs. Blue: i HATE that thermometer! i do it three times and take the average

i looooove my no touch one! no covers to replace (or germs to spread.... eww), you can do it while they sleep, you can check the room temp, and i find it to be far more consistent (though you have to wait between taking the temps, you can't rapid fire them, but since it's more consistent, i don't feel the need to do it a bunch of times)

I like our Exergen temporal thermometer. It isn't as accurate as a rectal temp, but it's been consistent, compares favorably to the underarm one we have, and can be used on sleeping kids. We've had it for about a year. I bought it on our pediatrician's recommendation.

@looch: That's what we did in the NICU and I've tried it at home, but they are so wiggly now, it's hard for me to get them still long enough to get the temp that way. I may have to resort back to that, though.

@locavore_mama: Well, it seems really popular, so I really think we might have just gotten a crappy one.

We have a Braun Thermoscan, and maybe we just got a dud, but it's not very accurate at all. We used it several times after we got it months ago and it would show a regular-ish temperature, but we could tell LO was burning up and would check with the rectal thermometer and the temp would be something way higher than what registered on the Braun.

So, I'm in the market for reliable, accurate thermometer, but not a rectal one since I think our kids are too old for that. Inexpensive is great, but accuracy is more important to me as I hope it will last for many, many years to come.

Do you have a tried-and-true recommendation?
