@betsyboop: My dad is a Walgreens manager and HATES the 'Be well!' He's supposed to write up employees if he doesn't hear them saying it.

My first job was at an ice cream parlor, and defrosting the freezers SUCKED. You had to take the huge metal containers of ice cream out, carry them (super heavy, of course back to the freezer and then use a combo of a sledge-hammer type thing with a scraper to get the ice off, because the owner was insanely cheap.

I also worked at a tech store (I'm sure you can figure out which one if this has happened to you) for many years. The worst thing we were asked to do was to try to get customers to engage in a personal conversation with us. Our corporate office decided that if customers had a friendly conversation with us they might be more open to our advice/suggestions and want to buy from us. I HATED it - I want customers to be able to trust my advice and come across as nice and honest (because I am!) - not like some greasy used car salesman asking you questions about your kids, the sports team whose gear you're wearing, what they're up to that weekend, etc. Oh, and I was supposed to train people in my department to do the same thing. My managers knew how I felt about it...honestly, I pretty much just didn't do it and they ignored it because I had some of the highest sale numbers anyways.

Didn't happen to me, but the exec assistant at work had to go bail our VP out of jail one night for drunk driving. (He was an alcoholic, so she got to do all sorts of wonderful things working for him.)

When I worked the register at a concession stand at a movue theatre we all had to pitch in with cleaning up each night. I had the disgusting task of cleaning the nacho cheese machine. I maybe did this once or twice before calling dibs on something else and then permanently became in charge of counting the candy and putting it away for a manager.

When I worked back drive thru at Mickey D's I was supposed to put the happy meal bags together and wash dishes. Bags no problen. Dishes heck no! I refused and the manager had other employees do it. I later would make the bank runs for the manager.

My first job was in HS at the local movie theater, and I hated it! Among the stupid crap they had me do was check tickets to make sure people weren't sneaking into a movie.

Well, most people had stuffed their tickets somewhere by the time they got to be, and would be SO pissed that I asked for it. I was cussed at many a time, and had popcorn thrown at me a few times as well. I haaated being assigned to that task!

I have had some interesting jobs in my time. I'm a nurse now and I spend my entire shift doing things I thought were unthinkable before

In the past, I worked at Victoria's Secret and was asked to climb up on a HUGE ladder in my high heels and change a light bulb. Those ceilings are high! And they wouldn't let me take off my shoes. I didn't stay there long.

Another job I had was as a preschool teacher and I would get the most bizarre requests from parents. I was once asked to take a picture of a child's stools at every diaper change for a week and text the picture to the parent. They were concerned about their digestion or something and dad was a doctor (most of my kids' parents were doctors or lawyers there) so I totally get it, but that was definitely odd at the time as a 20 year old college kid. Haha.

@betsyboop: What the heck!? Didn't he have family he could call!?

I was hired to be a tech intern at a dot com in the summer of 2000. The director of biz dev tried to ask me to move his brand new Camaro at one point, but I declined saying I didn't really know how to drive. I had just gotten my license and I definitely didn't want to get behind the wheel of an expensive sports car and crash it or side swipe it on something!

I used to work in research, and a lot of the stuff I did involved working with radiation. So you'd run your experiment, which was already a few hours of work in the hot room. Then you have to clean up, which basically involves standing there and scrubbing a bunch of big pieces of glass and big plastic equipment with 409. For hours. At the end of the day. And you can't even sit down, because the damn stool in the room is hot.

And in the back of your head is the knowledge that if you screw up and get anything on your clothing, you basically have to leave your clothing there and go home in your underwear. Which happened.

My first job out of college was an academic year-long research "fellowship" at a very small think tank, basically a glorified paid internship, but it was intended to be a really substantive intro to research. About halfway through the year, they fired the receptionist because she was pretty terrible, but rather than replacing her they split her administrative duties between a few of the junior staff. So on top of the work I already had, we had to take turns answering the phones and I was put in charge of office supplies. I know WAY too much about ordering office staplers now!

In my early working years (high school) I worked at a gas station. They had 2 "full service" pumps and the rest were self serve. When it would rain or be super cold, everyone went to the full service pumps. And there was no awning over the pumps.
So I'd be standing there in a giant yellow raincoat, pouring rain, pumping grown men's gas. And they'd say "I'm sorry". Clearly not that sorry because they still stayed in the car and didn't tip me :silly:

I worked in the food court for a bit in college ringing register off and on. Whenever a customer said 'thank you' it was Company policy to respond 'my pleasure'. So gross. A female college girl saying 'my pleasure' to other male guys really creeped me out.

Worst I've heard though is a girl in our company in another office was called one morning to pick up her boss because he was hungover (and too lazy to ask his wife......). I gave her hell when I found out she did it. Dude walks around the office spitting on the floor (and in your face when he talks to you). I don't know how they still employ him.

When I was working in NYC, I got a call from my boss at 2am on a Friday night asking me to pick him up from the hospital to take him home. He had had knee surgery and his girlfriend who had been waiting for him passed out in the recovery room and was rushed to the ER! I wasn't annoyed but it was somewhat of a crazy request.
Most annoying was when I was volunteering a few years ago and was called in to handle a task that was "sensitive" and required a "certain amount of discretion". When I got to the office, turns out they wanted me to pack up the executive director's office in preparation for the office move. P.S. she had a full-time assistant. Ugh.

At any point in your employment history, what’s the most annoying, strangest, aggravating, or “inappropriate” task you’ve been asked to do?

I remember I used to be a receptionist at a law firm a long time ago, and one of my duties was setting up the coffee, tea, sugar, spoons etc. tray for depositions. I had to set this up in the kitchen, then walk it through the entire office to the conference room. I also had to pour it and take care of sugar/milk. “Receptionist”, I get it. But I hated that task! Everyone in the depositions would stare at you as I served. Ugh! An “intern” at this firm was asked to shine a partner’s shoes!
