@LuLu Mom: I was at a 4 before I went into labor! I had weeks of prodromal labor before, but it was that last check which sent me in to labor. I showed up at the hospital actively contracting and at a 6 about 8 hours later.

Kind of a counter example. I was not dilated at all. Then went into labor the next day. Had my son in under three hours.

@travellingbee: I think it was early labor by that point, I was having decent contractions on the monitor, but nothing really bad while still in triage. That said, in the two weeks prior, I had some insane contractions that would drop me to my knees, but no regular patterns. I was a hot mess for the two weeks prior! I had been walking and super active to get him out since my maternity leave was dwindling down, but nothing happened until I was stuck laying still in that triage bed for 3 hours!

I was 4-5 cm for about a week. It suuuuuucked! Went to triage for high BP in my due date and was at a 7 and not feeling much yet. They gave me an epidural, broke my water, and he was out in under an hour.

I was 5cm, 90% effaced at exactly 39 weeks. I had been having unpainful contractions for at least a week and they continued until 39 weeks 4 days when active labor started. I don't know how far dilated I was when active labor started because it took me three hours after the contractions became painful for me to finally convince myself to go to the hospital. I was 9cm, 100% effaced when I finally got to the hospital. Baby was born less than four hours after I was checked in but I had to push for over two hours and he was posterior so we ultimately had to use a vacuum to get him out.

A girl I work with was 5cm for 3 weeks. Personally I've never been more than 1.5cm and 70% effaced before labor but I go for a 38 week check tomorrow so we'll see if I've progressed. Last pregnancy I was 1cm and 50% effaced the day I went into labor.

@coopsmama: Yep I just had a midwife tell me she had a mama in her 5th pregnancy who was dilated to "a stretchy 7" and still not in labor! Once she did go into labor though it was super super fast.

I was 4cm before labor started. Less than 4 hours from start to finish! It was definitely quick.

My midwife told me she had a patient dilated to *7* but still not in labor. It was quick when it happened - just had to get through transition!

I was 4-5 cm dilated and almost completely effaced at 37w. Contractions started at 38w. After a couple hours of contractions I was at 7cm. They broke my water and I delivered DS 45 min later! I was told to go to the hospital right away as well. I still had a couple hours tho before things started ramping up

I'm always interested to hear this response. My friend is 36 weeks and she got checked and the doctor told her she is 4 cm dilated and 100% effaced but not in labor! She said as soon as she has her first contraction she needs to book it to the hospital because she will most likely go fast! What is the most progress you've heard?
