On a more general note, SO many people have insisted on telling me "Pregnancy and/or birth will be for you EXACTLY like it was for me, which was [xyz]." Then, when I tell them "Really? Because someone else told me that for her, it was completely different," they respond "Well you can't listen to HER- every pregnancy is different!"

Also, it's not really "advice," but I'm so sick of people telling me that "everything is going to be so different" and that I "have no idea what it will be like." Obviously, everything will be different, and no one knows exactly what it will be like. All these people know that I helped raise my brother who is 16 years younger than me, however, so it's not like I have absolutely no newborn experience.

Also, my dad told me to stop eating bread while pregnant. No idea why.

@MrsHansen82: I've actually had friends who's OBs have told them to go home and have a glass of wine to relax when they were late in their pregnancies. So that isn't quite so crazy.

When I was overdue, my dad told me I should have a couple of margaritas to relax me so the baby would come out. When I told him that was crazy, said "You're not going to hurt anything, the baby is fully formed by now"

My family has no shortage of ridiculous advice when it comes to my pregnancy. My aunt told me to keep a picture of a cute baby and look at it everyday so that my baby comes out cute. Uuuum, what?? Excuse me, but my baby will be cute regardless, thank you very much. The same aunt told me not to slouch, because it was going to make the baby's head too big. My aunts and cousins also freak out if I bend over, lift anything that weighs more than a feather, sit on the floor, or wear heels(OMG the lectures I got for wearing heels to my BABY SHOWER).

I had a coworker tell me not to sweep or vacuum during my pregnancy because it will cause a miscarrige. When I asked how it would cause that she told me that the downward motion I would make with my hands would cause my body to push the baby out. Then she looked at me like I was crazy and asked how I did not know that!

@MUI831: my MIL bought me nipple roughing up exfoliating gloves (in pink AND blue), which she presented to me at Christmas in front of the entire extended family and went into a 5 minute long tirade about how to rough them up, and her roughing up process and so forth. It was mortifying. And I knew it was not a real thing right from the outset.

@Mrs. Lion: and @loki: I slept WAY better with a newborn than in the third tri.

Another one that made me crazy when I was a FTM was how everyone was always like "wow huge changes" and "your life will never be the same" and "get ready for a huge change". I just think you have no concept of what those changes will be, and everyone makes it sound like those changes will be all terrible and it just is unduly alarming without providing any useful information.

@Mama Bird: ya. apparently my baby can see what i'm doing (???) and is slouching in utero. she's destined for a lifetime of bad posture because of me! the same woman told me i need to think long and hard about what i name her and should choose something unique like Destiny or Harmony. Nothing against those names but nooooot entirely my taste.
