Honestly, I don't worry about these lists. Kids names are so diversified these days, compared to when I was a kid, that even if you pick a "popular" name, your kid isn't likely to run into too many peers with the same name. My son's name is in the top 25 of this list, but closer to 200 on the SSN list. And I've never met a kid with his name.

We're still safe! DD's name is not on that list, though the #2 choice we were sitting on is on that list. Our boy name we hope to use some day is not on the list either.

@Foodnerd81: OMG I KNOW. Like... at least wait until the series is complete so you find out what her character winds up doing. (Nevermind it's a title not a name anyway)

It's funny though, we were happy to pick a name that was not even in the SSA top 500, then found out a couple weeks ago there is a girl at LO's new daycare center with the same first name and same first two letters of her last name. Like what are the chances. You really can't predict these things I suppose - at least it's an older girl, not in her same class.

What i usually do is look at the social security site that has actually registered names at birth for 2015. Because name berry is basing this off of name searches and i tend to search for names i am on the fence about more than the actual name i end up choosing

I remember these name lists used to stress me out SO much when I was pregnant the first time, because I didn't want a million of the same name in her class at school. But now? Our next wee one's name is pretty popular and I kind of don't care as much. I wonder if it's a first time Mum thing?

Has no one noticed that khaleesi is in the top 50 on this list??

Looking at it again, I think people are likely to research and consider less common names, but often end up picking something more mainstream, for lack of a better word. So you might look at, say, Sadie, but ultimately pick Emily.

I've never met anyone with many of the top 20 names. My baby's name is 34 on this list but I've met many little girls with her name just in the last six months (which makes sense since it has been in the top ten for our state on the SSA list).

DS2's name is in the top 10 of their list and top 20 of SSA list for 2015. It keeps getting more popular! Eeks! DS1's name is also increasing in popularity but still in the top 200's. I have heard his name before at the pool, but I've never personally met anyone with either one of my kids' names.

My DD's name is on that list, in the 80s. I'm a bit sad that it seems to be rising in popularity (barely in the 400s on the SSA list the year she was born but up to the mid-300s last year). I'm not surprised, though, since it's very close to a name that has been super-popular for years.

@wrkbrk: I know, it's hard to decide sometimes if it's good to be really unique or if you want something that fits in a bit more!

For me, I'm not a fan of very trendy/modern names. Mine was one of those in the 80s but I'm sure it'll never make a comeback, and I bet a lot of people on this board have trendy 70s/80s names too! I never really liked it so don't want to do that to my kid. But I think being "popular" during a certain year doesn't really bother me so much, if it's still a classic/traditional name, which all mine are. Just seems those are making a bit of a comeback right now.

Yah I wonder how accurate the Nameberry list is in predicting what people will actually use. Doesn't look perfect based on last year's list.

This might be a bit more accurate on what people are actually choosing: http://www.babycenter.com/popularBabyNames.htm?year=2016

And here you can compare the names that are popular on Nameberry based on the most popular names in USA http://nameberry.com/popular_names

I feel like a math genius could come up with a very detailed algorithm to figure this all out  But in the end I think I'm just going to go with the name I love the most, regardless of popularity.

I would definitely not use this list to predict if a baby name will be popular. The boys names in particular on this site are not the "actual" popular ones, as per the Social Security list. For example, Ezra and Asher are only barely in the top 100 last year, and Atticus was ranked 350.

I think the social security list from 2015 is probably a much better predictor than this. Interest in a website doesn't mean people will use it.
