Great article! DH and I were just talking yesterday about how much money we save (or how much added unseen income we really have) just by having WFH options and short commutes. If you consider your hourly rate multiplied by the commute hours multiplied through the course of the year - that's several thousand dollars. I consider commute and getting ready time basically unpaid work. Then consider the price of gas, the price of stress and sanity, etc...

The cost of commuting is high! Time is money!

@Cherrybee: agreed! I leave work early and feel like I pick her up so late. Fail on both accounts.

My commute is monstrous (over an hour each way), but DH and I ride together so ee get 2 hours of uninterrupted quality time every day, and he does the driving so I'm not that miserable ;)

Great article! I only commute twice a week and on those days my mom takes care of my son and my dinner, lol. While I look forward to those 2 days, they go take a toll, physically, mentally, etc.

A major reason why we live where we do is that I refuse to move to the 'burbs due to the commute. My commute is about 45 minutes door-to-door and will be closer to 30 minutes in June when my office moves. My husband's commute is 30 minutes too. A longer commute would seriously cut into the quality time I am able to spend with my son before his bedtime. Life's too short to spend it on a train.

I have a 60-90 min commute each day, 5 days per week. I also have the most flexible employer in terms of start and finish times so a lot of the drop off and pick up duty falls to me. Its hard because you have a choice - give 100% to your job and risk being late OR take the piss. Striking the balance generally means being crap at your job and patenting all at the same time..... in that I'm *that mum* who is late for the daycare collection AND I am the mum who strolled out of work at 4pm.....! Commuting sucks.

This is so funny because DH has a 15 min commute with a flexible schedule and I have a 45 min commute and have to be in by 8:30am. His flexibility has really saved us. I can leave work early enough to do pickup, but he feeds ds bfast and does dropoff every day. He also loads the crockpot, accepts our deliveries and handles emergencies. He does way more than i do. If he wasnt so awesome i would have to be a sahm.

My commute is 45-60 minutes each way, and I do drop off and pick up. I don't feel particularly stressed about it, but only because I know there's not really anything I can do to change it, so I just have to go with it. But with Dave's schedule I have to get ready, out the door, drop off, work, pick up, dinner, bath, bed etc mostly solo (Dave usually gets Evan dressed in the AM). I leave at 7a, and 8p goes down at 8, and I have to be an energizer bunny in-between. Meticulous meal-planning and weekend grocery shopping for the week has been a huge help...it's one less thing I have to worry about, especially if it's something I can throw in the slow cooker or prep most of the night before.

Interesting! There have been lots of studies that show that commute times have an effect on your overall happiness. I love that DH is only a 5 minute bike ride away from home and that we don't have to wake up at ridiculous times to beat the traffic! I am really grateful to have an employer who offers flexible working arrangements and will be working from home after I go back to work from mat leave #2.

This is an interesting article I thought it's worth posting. I can relate the stresses of getting ready in the morning, out the door to daycare/preschool, then back home, and off to the El to get into work. I can also relate to the stress at the end of the day of getting dinner ready. Sometimes, I dread the last hour of work because suddenly I have to have dinner plans in mind and make sure that we're all ready for the night.
