@anonysquire: I'm glad you asked this because our next door neighbours' girl (she is 12) has volunteered to babysit for us. I would never leave her alone with the kids, but I've been thinking I would love an extra pair of hands to entertain E while I get jobs done around the house. She has said she will do it for free (she loves kids and wants to be a teacher), but I want to pay her something.

It ranges here (Midwest suburb of a medium sized city), there are a number of 8th graders who charge $5/hour and it seems to go up by about a dollar a grade until you get to juniors at which point it becomes $10-$12. We have used an 8th grader a couple of times but prefer a different form who is going into her sophomore year and we pay her $7. I just asked what they expected to be paid, in the case of the older girl she asked for $6 but we bumped it up because she's great.

I'm wondering what to pay a mothers helper? I will be home the whole time and I am using a 12 year old. Her duties will just be to keep the kids alive and happy. No cleaning, feeding or diaper changes. What do you pay an 11-12 year old in your city? 4 hours a week, broken into 2 days.
