DD wasn't colicky per se, but she cried A LOT and was high maintenance newborn Once she hit the 4 month mark, she was much more mellow. She's been great since then, but the early toddler crazies have been showing themselves. Either way, she's fun. DH is hard pressed to want to TTC another, but we were always aware that we wanted to wait about 2 years in between TTC.

My son had awful colic that didn't fully go away until he was nine months old. After that he had sleep issues that lasted until he was three. There is a nine year difference between he and his sister, granted there was a divorce and I re-married, but I was still in the one and done camp! His sister was a perfect baby, perfect, toddlerhood is a different story ;) Now we have 10 month old who didn't have colic but was a very high maintenance newborn. I'm done ;)

DD was colicky for the first 4-5 months, and I was struggling with PPD. I tried eliminating dairy, giving probiotics, etc and nothing seemed to help. I think she just had to go through the "fourth trimester" I remember thinking "why would anyone ever do this again???" And while I definitely haven't forgotten how hard those months were, we are past it now and currently TTC. I'm really nervous for another colicky kid, but hope I'm better prepared this time around, especially for PPD. Keeping my fingers crossed though that LO#2 is super easy!

ETA: DD is now 24 months

DS was "colicky" for the first 4-5 months and it was horrible. WE also had a TON of breastfeeding issues, he had reflux and he woke up every 1-1.5 hours until we sleep trained him at 5.5 months.

I found out I was pregnant (surprise!) at 6 months PP- ha! The good news is that DD has been the complete opposite! So there is hope :)

My LO had colic and times were dark. I'm not sure how much of it was caused by his un-diagnosed tongue tie, but either way he's still not what you'd call an easy baby! He was also born in December and like you we had planned to start ttc no 2 in the new year.
I do definitely have the fear - it was the hardest thing I've ever gone through, but already at just 6 months I find myself looking at the early days with rose tinted glasses! Id like to think that if it happened again, I would have a bit more perspective and be able to know that it really does get better. But really when it comes to ttc I think we'll just play it by ear and see how we feel when we get there!
Friends of ours recently had a baby and when we went to visit I was completely shocked at what life with a newborn can be like - she was just quiet, content and required very little!

@locavore_mama: I totally think colic is real - it's a diagnosis of exclusion. When you've ruled out everything else that could possibly be making your LO cry inconsolably for hours on end, that is colic. It's like IBS. Haha.

@MrsHoneyC: I'm really sorry the first few months were so difficult for you but it's great that you can see the positive in it all. While my son didn't have colic, he was far from an easy baby and he isn't an easy toddler either. The newborn days were hell and I would happily adopt a toddler to avoid going through that stage again. Yes, our second child could be an easier baby, but he/she could also be worse! I do think that eventually you forget how difficult it was - or it gets a little blurry - and the desire to TTC again outweighs the negative.

M sounds a lot like your LO. A month early, I had PPD and she pretty much cried nonstop for 4 months. She ended up being diagnosed with MSPI and that made a huge difference, but anyway...

I have always known that we would have more than one LO, but it was pretty hard to imagine for the first year of M's life. She just seemed so miserable and our day-to-day life was SO hard. Now at 20 months she is an amazing toddler. Every time she smiles or laughs or makes me laugh running around in circles I am so grateful because of those early dark days. I've finally pushed my fears aside and I'm 16 weeks pregnant with #2 :) I'm terrified of having another colicky baby, but at least this time I will now that the dark days won't be forever and that our life will be wonderful again eventually. I would just take it day by day for now and I bet that some day it won't seem so impossible anymore.

As a side note: I was a terribly colicky baby and my sister was apparently so quiet that my parents took her to some kind of specialist to make sure she wasn't brain-damaged or something. They were totally unfamiliar with what life with a quiet baby was like!

My husband had *terrible* colic and my MIL had another exactly 2 years later. She says people - especially her mother - flat out told her she was crazy. But my SIL was a sweet, quiet baby. I don't think I could have gotten over it that quickly - DD was a terrible sleeper the first 7 months and it took me a few months after that to consider having #2.

My LO was a colicky baby, and we did EVERYTHING. Tongue tie correction, lip tie correction, MSPI diet for me, swinging, shushing, rocking, bouncing, you name it. Nothing worked until he was 8.5 months old, and even now at 13 months he's a little high strung still. I absolutely did not want another baby. My husband has softened my resolve a tiny bit, but I'm still pretty firm that I don't want another. I'm supposed to give him an answer in September, but I think I already know what it is :bummed:

I don't have any of my own experience yet, but I will say that my DH was really colicky as a baby, and has two younger brothers! His next youngest brother is two years younger, so not a huge gap. I also had what they thought was colic (turned out to be a dairy intolerance), and I'm the oldest of four - my next youngest sister is only 14 months younger :) I think both sets of parents would say that the differences in "difficulty" between children really varied a lot depending on our ages - for example, I was a difficult newborn, but an easy kid/middle schooler; my DH's brother was a really easy baby but a bit more challenging in the high school/college years.

@locavore_mama: I think colic is a real thing, absolutely nothing changed for my DS, the first 12 weeks he screamed every night from 5-10 and now he is a super-duper happy baby.

We had the exact same experience. First 6 months were TOTAL HELL. LO is now 13 months and I am nowhere near ready to TTC again, nor am I sure I absolutely want another one. I'll be 37 this year so we're punting the decision until LO is 18 months.

My LO is 9 months old and I'm ready to TTC, my DH is totally against it. We got lucky that he outgrew it at 3 months but it was a long time and DH never wants to relive that again. I should mention DH is an only and always had a one child preference; the colic just reinforced it.

I am very appreciative to have a group of women to chat with this morning who have been where i am. My son was a month early, had BM jaundice, acid reflux, has been a bad weight gainer, he is still in the 5th percentile of weight. We've just had so many challenges with him. I had health issues, PPD, so many issues it feels like. But its been so worth it, its totally about the big picture, he is worth every struggle... but sometimes i wish i had an easy baby.

My mother said i was an awful colic baby and my brother was a dream baby. It seems to be the story i hear most often, but the other week i was talking to a women whos first baby was a dream so when the second came they were shocked that they're baby was high needs and it was really hard for them. So in that way i am thankful out first baby was a challenge because i will expect our second to be like him, and if the baby isn't it will be a pleasant surprise and i wont be disapointed.

@MrsHoneyC: We're getting super close to our potential TTC date. At this point, it's becoming more about not putting too years in between LO and a sibling. I think that I'm finally emotionally and physically ready for it. It took a long time to get to it.

Some of the challenges we had in those early months I'm determined to not have aka my MIL staying with us for a week alone, etc. won't happen for the stability of our family. I'm smarter about that than I was last time. If anything, we can handle the newborn phase better since we've done it before.

Before we had LO, my husband was firmly in the “one and done” camp, and I waffled bit. LO was colicky and a tough newborn – those days were hell and now neither of us (right now) are interested in a second. I think had LO been an easy newborn, a second might have been more on-the-table (especially for me), although colic certainly isn’t the main reason we’re one and done.

LO is 24 months and I have definitely *not* forgotten about what those days were like – I think if you know you want to have more, you have a mental incentive to forget just how hard it is to deal with an infant that screams and cries for hours on end no matter what you try. Probiotics, drops, swings, bouncers, diet changes – we tried it all.

If we decide to try for a second, I know we both will be very nervous about having a repeat of those colicky days, especially coupled with caring for another child at the same time. It wouldn’t stop us from trying, but I would be crossing my fingers for an easy baby!

LO#1 was colicky (actually, had a milk protein allergy that just wasn't diagnosed) for the first 4 months of his life, and at the time I honestly thought we'd never have another. But by 6 months he was a really happy baby who, at 15 months, has turned into a really happy (extremely busy and opinionated, but happy) toddler. And I'm 10 weeks pregnant with LO#2, who I hope and pray is an easy newborn, but if not, what can you do? Like you said, it is hell while it lasts, but it doesn't last forever.

And like @swurlygurl: said, my mom told me I was colicky but both of my brothers were super chill babies.

My LO had colic and the first four to five months were pure misery. In addition to this, my delivery was fairly traumatic and my post partum anxiety was other level. Our initial plan was to TTC #2 around her first birthday which is in a month's time but the truth is I just can't face it. The endless evenings of screaming, the emotional exhaustion, the eventual depression...I'm dreading doing it again and I'm scared of the effect it will have on our now very happy little family. We definitely want a second child but we have moved back our timeline around 8 months.

@locavore_mama: I fully believe that colic is a thing, we saw so many dr.s and no one could help in any way other than to tell us its colic, try X,Y,Z and it will help. none of which did. i cut out all dairy too, didn't help. Our little boy still sleeps in 2-3 hour intervals. Its very challenging, but i love him so its worth it.

@lawbee11: oh thank you ! thats very sweet

@yellowbird: @pinkb: I've heard of this, women just simply forget and focus on the wonderful things, seriously moms are the best! I'm hoping i get to that stage where i am blissful and have forgotten lol

@shellio: I feel the same way, i know in my heart my husband and i want three kids. I've just always... known? We did start Bean on probiotics when he was 4 weeks old, did it for 2 months and saw little change, i think i tried every old wives tale i could think of / some really strange things. For us the only thing that helped was time sadly.

@cascademom: i can totally understand the need to wait, i am still really on the fence about how i will feel when we get to our very loosly talked about potential TTC date

Personally, I think the "colic" excuse is antiquated. I spent many, many, many of nights googling. ;) LO was inconsolable until she was probably 8 weeks until I figured out she had a dairy allergy. Then she was a horrific sleeper (2 hr wakeup!) until she was about 7.5 months.

It was tough.

Currently expecting our second. I always joke that if this one is as hard as #1 was we are are done at 2!!! LOL but on a serious note those first 7.5 months were rough. But after she she stated STTN regularly and now as a toddler, she is so much fun!!!

Ah, so sorry! I don't have my own personal experience, but apparently I was an awful colicky baby. It took my mom a while to TTC again and finally had my sister 3.5 years later - she ended up being a perfect baby!

I had a colicky baby. When he started to STTN, thinking about another one became a real possibility. My LO's also almost two years old. I'm finally ready to try for another one. Colic was one of a few reasons why we waited to try for #2.

Yep LO had colic, I am sure I don't remember exactly how bad it was since she is now 17 months. But currently trying for #2

@MrsHoneyC: I didn't deal with this but I'm so sorry. My second was tough (although not colicky). I haven't forgotten what it was like, and its still hard sometimes - but I am focused on the bigger picture which is that my family doesn't feel complete with 2 kids. I still want at least one more and I just remind myself that it is hard early on but it will get better.

Also, FYI - there is some new data that shows decreased rates of colic in babies treated from birth with probiotics. Sounds odd at first but definitely worth looking into since your next child will have an increased risk of colic. I think it was in the New England Journal of Medicine but there was also info out there in the lay press about it, around January of this year.

My LO had colic, and I wasn't ready for a long time. Now that she is almost two, I'm ready to try! I've forgotten how horrible it was and she is just so awesome that I definitely want another.
