@SeptMomma12: It was gradual sometime around 3 months (16lbs). She started nursing off both sides in the evening and then started guzzling both sides during the day and we have been doing both sides since. She is 10 months now. My first always took both sides right from the start. I attached a cool link that I like about breastfeeding.

I didn't pump.. Although I could really use the extra milk (my supply wasn't and isn't great), getting sleep/rest was more important. I just alternate feeding sides MOTN.

@SeptMomma12: my second LO was a one sided feeder until she was a little bit older and then started to take both sides. I wouldn't pump unless you are needing the stash. It will even itself out, all about supply and demand and the engorged breasts are temporary since your supply is still being established. Do you pump both sides before you go to bed when you leave a bottle?

If she only ate from one side and STTN for the rest of the night, I just toughed it out and waited until the morning (if I could) so that my body wouldn't keep producing so much at night.

@Kemma: She's a pretty quick eater - about 10 mins. And I've found that if she eats on both sides, it all tends to come right back up more often than not  I have a strong letdown.

LO1 would only feed on one side at a time. When she started to sleep in longer stretches, I'd pump one or both sides before I went to bed. In the morning, I'd feed her from one side, then pump the other side. I built up a huge freezer stash and ended up getting a deep freeze. I was so glad to have the freezer stash when I occasionally traveled for work and for when my supply started to dwindle.

@SeptMomma12: I pumped before returning to work and have a decent sized freezer stash, I plan on using it on overnights away (we have a couple planned later this year) and when she starts eating more if I can't keep up. Otherwise, I'll stop feeding and just use the stash the last month to start weaning her to only bottles.

I think it depends on what your plans are. I started pumping because I wanted to build up a freezer stash before I returned to work. But if you don't need a stash, then you could probably just pump/express enough to relieve the engorgement and let your body regulate to your baby's actual needs.

Definitely not! It took a couple of mornings waking up somewhat engorged, but no way was I going to pump in the middle of the night after LO went back to sleep! If I still felt somewhat full in the morning after feeding her, I would finish emptying that side with the pump, but my body quickly adjusted, which is what I wanted to happen.

Hand expressing is great for relieving a bit of pressure before LO feeds, but I was really conscious of not creating an oversupply so I trusted in my body to regulate itself and dealt with the mild discomfort for the day or two it took to sort itself out.

@blackbird: Ok, that makes sense. Thanks. I definitely tend toward the oversupply (I already have 150oz in the freezer just from pumping before bed), so I'm concerned about making that worse with the pump. But I also can't sit here in pain waiting for her to wake up! Maybe I will try just a few mins like you said.

I always pumped because I wanted to build my freezer stash and I wanted extra milk. I would get a lot at that first morning pump session. I was also going back to work so having extra milk was good for me so I wouldn't have to stress about not making enough

T only eats off one side, too, and sometimes only wakes up once. So I'll feed him both sides (as much as he will) around 930/10, put him to bed, then feed one side at 4am or so (And not pump), then I get up around 6. Today, I didn't have to pump because he got up, but if he's out cold, I'll pump then for about 10 min. I don't wake up crazy engorged, but I'm also not going to leave them like that for any longer, especially since that one side has gone 12 hours. It's a good way to get a freezer stash before work, anyways. Plus, just now I fed him off the right and he won't eat off the left. So....

I don't have an over or under supply necessarily, but I can pump a couple extra ounces a day and combine them to get a bottle every few days. Since I started going to the gym again, i like to leave DH with some milk

I think I asked about this same question a few months ago and most of the answers I got were to pump. But after doing that a started to get over supply and it really hurt our breastfeeding progress. The lactation consultant I worked with said if your supply is good, pumping isn't necessary and the output should match the baby's needs. If you're uncomfortable, pumping a little bit is okay though.

If your LO only eats on one side in the middle of the night, do you pump the other side after he/she goes back to sleep?

LO is 6 weeks and starting to sleep longer stretches at night. Last night, I pumped at 9:30, DH gave her a bottle at 10 and then she slept til 5. She only eats on one side at each feeding, so she ate on the right side and we went back to bed. But the side she didn't eat on is obviously very engorged and now at 7:30am, she's still sleeping and I'm pretty uncomfortable. I hand expressed a little bit, but I'm afraid to pump and then she wakes up and is hungry.

So will my body eventually adjust, or do I need to pump that other side in the middle of the night to protect my supply?
