@gotkimchi: oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that! I'm sure you're dreading CIO as much as I am! I will keep giving my LO 15 minutes to get back to sleep for another week or so before CIO. In the meanwhile I am trying to see if I can get him to eat more in the day and hope that makes a difference at night! I am willing to try anything before the awful CIO! Hang in there!!!! I would love to keep hearing how things are going for you!

@Leah: We did CIO to drop the first feed and what actually happened was he ended up eating more on his own. I pump and he's given bottles during the day and he went from 12oz before CIO to 17oz when we dropped the feed. I was worried he wasn't eating enough but part of why he wasn't eating enough was he habitually was eating at night and knew he was going to get fed then.

@Mrs Green Grass: I decided to try the dreamfeed last night. He went to bed at 6:30 and I fed him at 9:30 just before going to bed. He woke up at 11:30 and we let him cry for 15 mins but he didn't go back to sleep :-(. Does it take them a while to be used to the dreamfeed?

@catomd00: what are your thoughts on getting him to eat more during the day? Should I feed more often or will he likely eat more on a 3 hr schedule (instead of snacking)? Right now I feed every three hours unless a feeding time might interfere with a nap (then I feed sooner).

She sometimes wakes up at 9 or 10 and I've been feeding but I'm planning to just let her put herself back to sleep. Thoughts?

Some nights my 5 month old is hungrier than others, just like me! If she's swallowing and eating personally I wouldn't be comfortable not letting her eat. They're growing so much right now. If it's just a few sucks then going to sleep then that's just for comfort. I'd try to get her to eat more during the day to eat less at night, rather than trying to skip potentially necessary feeds.

@Mrs Green Grass: I would second the dream feed! At that age our LO wasn't even close to sleeping through the night. She would be asleep by 6:30 and have a good 4- 5 ish hour stretch of sleep but once the long stretch was done she would wake every 2-3 hours after. So with her early bedtime I never got a good stretch. Once I started the dream feed, however, that would kind of reset her feeding schedule and give me that 4-5 hour stretch right when I was going to bed. With our bedtime my ideal dream feed time was 10-10:30. Also was wondering how your LOs naps are? I always found a day of poor naps meant a night of poor sleep. Also what is bedtime? For us early bedtime also meant better sleep. Over all baby sleep is tough! No other words of encouragement but hang in there mommy! You WILL sleep again!

@Leah: have you asked your pediatrician if there's any need for your LO to still have a MOTN feeding? Bc if not, I would recommend what worked for our 4 mth old who was also waking 4/5 times per night.

Pretty simply just let him cry it out with checks at 5, 10, and 15 minutes of crying (no checks if just whining). Something similar happened to us where on the first night he put himself to sleep again quickly and we thought it was awesome but then night 2, it was way harder an he cried for 45 min aroud 2am. But we stuck with the plan and that was it. I think he was really trying to test our limits that time. Btw, this is what our pediatrician told us to do. I know it's not for everyone but it saved my life!

Also, we put him down a little later...between 7:30 and 8...usually closer to eight. His wake up time is 6.

Good luck!

I do dream feeds, too. M goes to sleep at 8, so I wait until 11, dream feed him, and then we all sleep until at least 3. Then he gets another, goes back to sleep and then gets up for the day around 6:30. If I skip that dream feed, it's a rough night.

@gotkimchi: I hope it works! When my LO went back to sleep on his own after 10 mins 2 nights ago my husband and I were shocked! I hope that this starts happening consistently for us both! I too don't mind feeding up to twice nightly, but five wakeups makes for a pretty cranky momma in the morning.

My LO was a preemie and low weight so we never let him go more than 4 hours until a little past 6 months I think. But we set the schedule, so he never woke up. Slowly we stopped or spread out the feedings. We probably have a naturally good sleeper, but maybe preventing the waking helped? I wish both of you better sleep soon!

@Leah: I know my lo has definately been able to go longer than she has been, I think she just likes a cuddle and a boob and is pretty used to it at this point. I was trying to get out of it with minimal amount of upset but the gentle methods haven't been working. I might give her 10-15 minutes tonight and see if she'll go back to sleep when she wakes the first time. I would be fine with 1 feeding but all night sucks! She usually goes to be around 645 or so but she doesn't wake at consistent times so I thought she was actually hungry but now I'm not sure

I am not an expert, but here are my two cents: 1) if you feel like LO needs to eat, set a wake time and do a dream feed. That could prevent actual earrings. We were able to get away with a dream feed around 11 or 12 and then he would sleep until 6, then I think he would go back to sleep, can't quite remember. But dream feeds worked really well for us.
2) after you have a decent feedings and have more wake ups, I'd ignore or comfort instead of feed if it was less than 3 or 4 hours.

@ms.janedoe: bedtime is usually between 6 and 7 depending on when he woke up from his last nap. There were a few nights when he slept better after going to bed closer to 7, but of course he ends up with much less than the recommended 11 - 12hrs nightsleep.

We sleep trained also and my 6mo old goes to sleep by herself and easily but also wakes 2-3 times per night. I don't know what to do about it either. I've tried feeding her less to drop a feedings but she just wakes earlier. I think we might have to make a firm no feeding before these times and just stick to it
