@Corduroy: Ha I know. Vomit is my least favorite thing. I ended up buying vomit bags off amazon and I have them in a variety of places just in case.

@Boogs: Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for post nasal drip and add notes about it in my vomit journal. Ah, parenthood.

@Corduroy: Usually once or twice, but he usually feels crummy the rest of the day. No fever or anything. And the next day he wakes up fine again. It's the weirdest thing.

@Corduroy: Hopefully it is just coincidence, seeing them sick, so often is heartbreaking!

My son recently had 2 days of vomiting in a 3 week period and all I could think was not again!! But it seems it was just bad luck that he got two stomach viruses back to back, hoping the same for your daughter!

@jmarionsmith: Thanks for sharing your experience that was really helpful, especially since I made the mistake of googling last night. I'm glad your daughter is doing well now.

Fortunately (?) DH felt sick last night. So maybe DD's two instances were just a coincidence. I started a journal last night with details about the two similar nights. Hopefully I won't have to look at it again for a long time.

@Corduroy: As I read your description I immediately thought cyclic vomiting. My DD was diagnosed with it when she was around 15 months old, although the vomiting started around 9 months.

With DD, I realized she would have "periods of puke" and periods of no puke. Basically she would have several weeks of vomiting, 1-2 times a week, & then 1-2 months of no vomiting. Her vomiting episodes sound just like your daughter's: vomiting for several hours but waking up fine and eating normally.

If your daughter is diagnosed by a neurologist, there is migraine medication she can take daily. With my daughter I opted to wait it out a little longer (with a prescription of zofran) because some (most?) kids outgrow it. Thankfully, she's only had one episode of vomiting since then & that was almost a year ago. We are pretty sure she's outgrown it. Though, like you said, she will be more likely to suffer from migraines later.

Just like migraines, there can be triggers for the vomiting, and illness is one. I realized several times that DD would have "periods of puke" after particularly nasty colds. It's possible your daughter's cold triggered the vomiting.

Hope some of that was helpful!

@ninja: I can't remember what she ate the first time but the doctor asked me to keep a journal of things she eats and what she does the day before to try and look for patterns. Food, activity, sun exposure, health, sleep.

Was there something common you fed at dinner each night it happened? Kinda sounds like what happens with my LO when there is a GI allergy to something he ate. Takes usually 2-5 hours before symptoms, then pukes till there isn't anything left. Bounces back after 12 hours or so.

Just got back from the doctor. Lungs and ears are fine. She didn't think LO had a virus since there was no fever or diarrhea and LO was totally normal yesterday and today.

The doctor thinks (but clarified she wasn't diagnosing yet) that LO is experiencing cyclic vomiting. I gather the hallmarks are repeated vomiting over a course of hours or days, feeling fine before and after, the symptoms usually come on at the same time of day (often early morning) and last for the same period of time within an individual. Kids with cyclic vomiting more often experience migraines as adults. I have a history of migraines. I haven't researched any of it yet but it fits based on what my doctor said. She prescribed Zoforan and kindly wished us the best.

Ugh, I've never hoped for the stomach flu before but I'd happily take a bout of that over a life of vomiting and migraines.

There was a while when we kept finding DS on puke in the mornings, but we couldn't i
figure out why. One time it was an ear infection.

@Ajsmommy: This LO is a champion pooper but I'll keep that in mind for DS. He's had constipation issues eight months now.

Thanks for all the things to consider. LO had an awful cough the first time. The cough didn't directly cause the vomiting but I did call the advice line to see if it could be a sign bronchitis or pneumonia. She has a history of both. I'll email her doctor today and see if a visit is warranted to check her lungs and ears.

Mine did this 2 weeks ago. Same exact thing. Woke up at 10:30 and puked several times from 10:30-2am. No fever. Woke up the next morning, felt fine. Ate breakfast, ate lunch (ate a TON at lunch, actually), then didn't eat much dinner. Woke up at 4am, puked 2x. No fever. Woke up the next morning, felt fine. None of the rest of us got sick. So weird.

Is she having regular BM's? My friends toddler got constipated but was still passing some stool, but wasn't getting it all out and it was causing random/severe throw ups. They ended up in ER one night and the scan showed how backed up she was

LO (3.5 yo) woke up vomiting one night 3 weeks ago. She threw up 7 times, every 20 minutes. No fever. In the morning she seemed fine. Last night she did the same thing and she seems fine this morning. She's staying home from preschool and will be watching a lot of TV with dad today.

Any idea what this might be? Just a coincidence that it was similar and close timing? Last time none of the rest of the family got sick (hopefully we don't this time). I want to make sure it doesn't sound like a food allergy or intolerance that I should be tracking.

LO started preschool after the first incidence so if the root cause is the same I don't think it's related to any particular practice at preschool (packing lunches, bathroom hygiene, contaminated water cooler were all on my mental suspect list).
