I nursed every wake up until sleep traing at 12 month for DS. For DD I'm still nursing every wakeup regardless of timing. We nurse on demand all day as well.

When my LO is hungry at night, he won't settle for the paci and he'll start rooting on my shoulder as soon as I pick him up. That's when I'll feed him. Otherwise, I will try to just put him back to sleep. If he nursed to sleep, I'd probably try to nurse him down every time because once he's awake, he is up for HOURS.

Before we sleep trained at 6.5 months I just fed him at every waking. We tried to do the whole soothe thing first and it never worked. It was just easier to put him in bed with me, feed him and fall back to sleep. At one point we were giving him the pacifier first which worked great for like a week, and then it totally bit us in the a$$. Every time the pacifier fell out he'd wake up and be really upset, and eventually it stopped working at all.

During sleep training I didn't feed him before 2am, I'd just let him CIO. Now I'm not sure what I'd do if he woke up. He usually sleeps straight through to 7:30 or 8, so I'd probably assume something was wrong if he woke up, but I'd give it 10-15 minutes to see if he calms down. The last few times he had MOTN waking it took him 7 minutes to fall back to sleep.

@Foodnerd81: yes! I'm so worried about creating bad habits, too but...sleep... ;)

@Chillybear: I probably should start offering the other side again. I used to not because it made her spit up worse, but that seems to be getting better. I told DH the other night, "I know she can go this long without food during the day!" Lol

@nana87: sorry you're going through this, too. That's early, but the first little stretch sounds nice though! DDs "long" stretch is still only 3-4 hours :(

when my DD was that young I'd feed her at every wake up and she'd usually go right back to sleep. As she got older the nursing time diminished, then the wake ups diminished and now she STTN. IF she wakes up now I just put her paci back in b/c I know she's not hungry b/c she started STTN months ago.

Lo does this too! She's about the same age. She sleeps a really long time during her first stretch (usually 7-9 hrs!) so I can't complain but after that she is up constantly. She isn't fully awake usually-- she falls asleep nursing quickly but just won't stay asleep long. Her weight used to be low (it's normal now) so we supplement, so I always feed her whenever she wants. It just sucks when she wakes so early-- usually she's up for the first time between 3 and 5 and I don't really sleep much after that since I pump after nursing after the first wake up and then she wakes again not long after that

Anyway, no advice but I commiserate!

you mentioned that you only feed her on one side during the day... maybe try offering her the other side so she can learn to stretch out her feedings to 2 1/2-3 hours or if nothing else start to get most of her calories in during the day.

My policy was if she can go 2-3 hours during the day she can go 2-3 hours at night. and if she woke up in the interim i tried pacifier and rocking before giving the boob. Sometimes i think she just wanted the comfort and missed me since i went back to work around that time

Oh, I went the easy route and just fed every time. She fell back asleep so quick, it was just easier. Eventually, I made a policy of no nursing unless it had been at least 2 hours. Even now (she's 10 months), I nurse if I'm tired and just want to get back to sleep.

@fussygal: I was always torn between just feeding her right away- faster but building bad habits, possibly?- and try to sooth her other ways- much more work in the short term but maybe better habits long term? But generally my baby was just pissed unless I fed her so I pretty much gave in a always fed her at that age. If it was really close to her last feeding I would have Dh go in and sooth her- she tolerated not being fed by him better than me. Sometimes it worked, sometimes I still had to go in. It's so so tiring.

On the plus side, after these kind of phases, when is be worried about building bad habits, she usually would go back to her usual 1-2 wake ups without issue.

@illumina: I was wonder if it was the 4 mo regression, too but she's been doing it for 3-4 weeks (although I'd be happy if there were a reason I could put my finger on! :) ) During the day she eats often, every two hours or so, and usually only one side at a time.

There's a 4 month sleep regression which might be coming up for you, or you could already be in it. How is she feeding during the day? (just trying to figure out if she's still likely to be hungry at night). I think I'd be tempted to ride it out a little longer and feed her so you both get back to sleep quicker and then look to maybe sleep train in a month or so if things haven't improved.

@Trailmix: Sorry you had to deal with this, too. Often it's every hour which seems too frequent. She's still in the RnP, I wonder if she'll get better when we pitcher in her crib?

@Dandelion: Same (minus the paci). I'm beginning to dread going to sleep because I know I'lll be up so much. It's 3:50 and she's been up four times since midnight, plus once at 10:00 :(

DS was the same way, would do a 5-6 hour stretch but then need to eat every 2 hours or so. Nothing else I tried would get him back to sleep besides nursing. Some babies are just like that :(

If the pacifier doesn't quiet M then I nurse him. But I generally feed at midnight and 4 am.

Lately he's crying once an hour to get his pacifier back in. It's taking a real toll on me to not get any real sleep.

What's your "policy" for feeding LO during a MOTN wakeup? I used to just go by my gut and I could notice if she was hungry or not, but lately it's so much harder. She is 15.5 weeks and wakes io A LOT. After her first (and usually only) long stretch, I can tell she's genuinely hungry, but after that is so difficult.

I used to at least try to rock her back to sleep unless I could tell it was an urgent hunger cry or something like a diaper change. Then there are times like tonight where I get her rocked back down pretty easy, but she wakes up two mins later wailing and no amount of bouncing helps. It's so much easier to just stick a boob in it, but she can't still be hungry every 60-90 mins, right?! Especially since she was going for much longer stretches before her sleep went to crap. This has been going on for weeks, so longer than a growth spurt where I might expect it. I feel mean depriving her of food if she's truly hungry though, so I usually just feed (which she would never refuse) but mama's tired!
