Thanks guys. I have to continually guard myself against these that-thing-you-weren't-worried-about-but-is-really-dangerous! articles (like the time we went to the ER for croup because my daughter had been swimming that day and I was convinced it was dry drowning...) because apparently, I'm really susceptible to them.

I'll talk to my dr next well-check, but I'm going to chill until then.

Yes this was identified with DS1 when he chipped a tooth at 18 months and we had to go to the dentist. She referred him to ENT who wasn’t overly concerned but his adenoids were enlarged. We did nasal spray for a while with no noticeable improvement. He was most concerned about snoring/apnea. This saga went on for about 2.5 years as DS has a speech disorder and began failing hearing tests. He’s now 4 and had tubes and adenoids out this summer which drastically improved speech and the mouth breathing resolved on its own somehow? I don’t recall when exactly.

I saw that article too. Talk about fear mongering click bait! But if you’re worried, get a referral for peace of mind. Our ENT is more conservative in treatment but we kept pushing, mostly about the speech stuff.

@MamaBear87: @shabang: I also have large adenoids and have always been a mouth breather. I mouth breathe during exercise also - not just at night. I feel like I can't catch my breath if I breathe through my nose.

I don't have any issues from it.

I also am freaked out by that article. My son has been a mouth breather his whole life and the pediatric dentist who did his ear tubes was actually the first to mention the issues that can arise from it. Right now, at age 3, we are just keeping an eye on it and gently reminding him to close his mouth. If it continues, he recommends myofunctional therapy

@shabang: does she sleep with her mouth open, or does she actually breathe from her mouth?

I don't breathe through my mouth unless I have a bad cold, but me and my siblings and both of my girls all sleep with our mouths hanging open. But while breathing through our nose. I've checked my own kids to see where the air is coming from when they are sleeping--mouth open, breathing through nose.

@shabang: i believe so. Larger adenoids are a genetic difference so they've been that way since I was a child

@MamaBear87: Do you know if you were a mouth breather as a child? Because most of the concerns seem to be in children, not adults.

I mouth breathe at night because I have larger than normal adenoids. I've never had any issues from it. I sleep fine and don't have issues concentrating. When forced to breath through my nose when doing something strenuous I feel a little out of breath. I'd ask at next appointment but it wouldn't concern me that much

That article floating around (and linked on the blog) about "dangerous" mouth breathing in children the past few weeks has triggered my googling paranoia. My 5yo is a mouth breather while sleeping, but she sleeps well, shows no signs of adhd, is well-behaved in school, and basically seems to have no issues from it. But now I've gone down the rabbit hole and read about dental issues and facial deformities, all related to mouth breathing.

Does anyone else have a similar situation? Unless she gets sick, we're a ways off from her next dr appt, but would you make one to discuss it? Or is it just time to put the google down?
