Thanks! I’ve decided to keep her at her current daycare, and I appreciate everyone jumping in to help me make that decision easier!

Personally I would not switch to a center and would let the kids have the quiet afternoon while it’s still an option. My 2 big kids attended only morning preschool and then were either with a nanny or me in the afternoon. My eldest only ever went to preschool 3 days a week. They both handled the jump to full day K just fine.

Based on what you wrote I would not switch to the center. Simple is good and kids will adapt!

@BadgerMom: We did that with our older daughter and it worked out well. I’m leaning toward just keeping things the same for our middle one. I feel a little bad she won’t have a friend at daycare, but she will have a ton of playtime in the morning with friends at 4K.

@MrsSCB: We’ve been doing two drop offs for a year and a half, and it’s fine, but not ideal. My husband will have three drop offs no matter what next year because he will take our middle straight to her pre-K class. Her provider will pick her up from there, so when I get the kids later, I’ll pick her and her brother up from the same location.

If we go with our original plan, our girls are both dropped off within about 5 minutes from our house. With the center, it would be a further drive.

@oldschooolmama: Great questions.
-No, her provider won’t bring on another child her age since she’d only have them for a year.

-The half day pre-K program she would be enrolled in is relatively close to our house and is through our district. Our older daughter has a fair amount of kids from her 4K class at her elementary school with her. The center I would prefer probably wouldn’t have many (or perhaps any) kids from her school there and is not affiliated with the district.

-Kindergarten is full day here, although I’m not worried about her adjustment based on her personality.

We sent DS to a morning 4K and then back to our in-home daycare in the afternoons just like you’re describing. I thought it was a really good compromise. Although DS didn’t have any issues academically at 4K (most of it he knew already), learning how to operating in a classroom setting was still draining for him so it was nice for him to have a lower stimulation, familiar afternoon.

We did move each of our kids from a home daycare to a full-day preschool, mostly to be around more kids their age as they got older. That required two dropoffs for a little over a year when we first moved my older kid. That was fine, but three is a lot! Are they at least reasonably close together?

I have some questions:

Is your currently daycare provider planning to get another child around your daughter's age?

Will the short day preschool have kid going to her kindergarten class? What about center?

Is your kindergarten full day or half day? If it is full day then a center might better prepare her for the LONG kindergarten day.

Honestly I wouldn't want to do three different pick ups but so I'd lean towards the half day preschool program.

Our younger two kids go to an in home daycare together. Our almost 4 year old has a little girl her age there that she loves to play with, and the other three kids are in the 1-2 range.

The little girl our daughter plays with will be going to a center next year for 4K. She’s timid by nature, and they feel being in that environment will help her prepare for kindergarten. Our plan had been to send our 4 year old to a morning 4K program (until about 11), then have her provider pick her up for the afternoon.

Now I’m wondering if it would be better for us to look into a center for her as well since the little girl her age will no longer be there. We aren’t worried about her transition to kindergarten, so the switch would be purely so she has other kids her age to play with. On the other hand, she will be with kids her age every morning for 4K, so she’ll really just have lunch and quiet time at her sitter’s house, with perhaps an hour of play time in the afternoon without someone her age around.

Positives to a center: She would have kids her age to play with all day. She is social and likes to play with others.

Negatives: She wouldn’t be with her little brother (he’ll be nearly 2 at the start of the school year). We would have three separate drop offs/pick ups each day (her older sister is in elementary school). Cost is more, but we can make that work as well.

If it’s for the best, we can make that work for a year. What would you do in this situation and why?
