We transitioned DS at 21 months and it has been incredibly easy. He still stays in bed like it's a crib. He has slid feet first off the edge a couple times, but the bed is really low he didn't get hurt and we just went in and fixed him. He never got the point that he was climbing out, but he did like to put his foot over the rail when I would come in his room.

@Foodnerd81: we have the babyletto hudson which doesn't let you put the mattress on the floor or have a higher side so unfortunately we can't buy more time that way.

If you want to keep him in the crib, have you tried putting the mattress all the way to the floor (instead of on the bottom setting which is usually a good 6 inches or so above the ground)? My friend bought herself a couple of months that way. She also had a crib that was higher in the back than front so she turned it around so she couldn't climb over the higher part.

My LO hasn't actually climbed out yet but was freaking out and fighting the crib, so we tried a big bed (new baby in December is getting the crib anyway) but she isn't ready. Just couldn't stay in bed and kept coming out, so we put her back in the crib and she's been ok again.

LO started climbing out of the crib at 24 months. We took the front off, got a net so she could climb in and out but not fall out, and she did fine with it. We just switcher her at 2.5 to a queen bed.

@sailgrl18: It went smoother than expected. He was over 2 - I want to say around 27 months, and we also did it when he was sick! DH was home with him b/c he was sick and had him in his crib for a nap and he suddenly showed up right in front of him.

Naps went to crap when we took off the front of the crib. He started needed us to rub his back to go down for naps, and we never did the locking him in his room for naps. For nighttime sleep, surprisingly, he never got out of his bed.

Over 4th of July, we moved him to a big boy room with a double bed, and he falls asleep far faster for naps and loves that we made him a big part of getting his big boy room ready. We had to get the crib ready for our new LO arriving in a week!

@2PeasinaPod: how old was LO? How did the transition go? I know we'll have to do it soon just hoping he gets better first. Having to do it when sleep is messed up from being sick just sounds horrible.

The second LO learned how to climb out of the crib, we took the front of the crib off. If he can do it once, he can do it again, and I was afraid he'd hurt himself.

DS is almost 20 months and after sleep training has been a pretty good sleeper (put him in the crib at 7:30 and STTN until 6ish). This past week he caught the stomach flu with a fever and sleep went to crap. The second night we had issues getting an overtired toddler to bed after tylenol failed and he had become so overtired he was hysterical. After two hours (and giving motrin which brought his fever down) we put him in his crib in hopes that he would fall asleep after some whining. But he got really mad and climbed out of the crib. He wasn't wearing a sleep sack due to the fever so I put his sleep sack on and he climbed out again. After eventually falling asleep on me we had a rough remainder of the night.

Hoping that it was just a fluke due to the illness, we started the next night's routine and he was hysterical and afraid of going in the crib alone. We've been doing a sleep lady shuffle and I've gotten to the point where he will fall asleep in the crib with me out of the room. But then anytime in the middle of the night he wakes up and stands I get so scared he's going to climb again.

Anyone deal with something similar? Were you able to delay the crib to toddler bed transition? I want to at least get him healthy first before making the inevitable transition.
