This is just the beginning of a lifetime of worrying now :(

I've heard nurses say that they prefer the crazy moms who come in every time they get a little scared over the ones who ignore their instincts because they don't want to be a bother and end up with bad news. They would rather give good news every time! So, don't ever feel bad about needing to call!!

I didn't even feel my first flutter until 20 weeks, and it was much later than that that they were constant.

@anonysquire: Would it help your anxiety to maybe back off the due date group that you are part of to help with your peace of mind? Several ladies in my group on another site have done that when they had anxiety especially when there seemed to be a lot of bad news coming often. Maybe take a break and then check back in a couple weeks?

@anonysquire: Glad to hear that the heartbeat was found quickly. Some people feel movement earlier than others. I didn't feel LO until later. Even after I tripped and fell, I sat down, drank lemonade, and counted kicks. Pregnancy anxiety is only the beginning. I worry constantly about LO at a year old plus. It's normal being a mom.

@anonysquire: I am a pretty paranoid individual as well. What I did was only allowed myself to freak out if I did not feel her according to her "normal" schedule. Basically, she was only noticeably active (at that point in my preg) in the morning and late at night. I had one night where I could not remember feeling her after I laid down for the evening - thats the only time I allowed my self to freak out.

They say babies are lulled to sleep my your daily activities and movement - knowing that helped calm me down during the day. As others mentioned, if you really need to reassure yourself something surgary to drink and laying down is your best bet.

Try to find your LO's pattern and use that point in the day to calm your anxiety. Try to get to that point in each day before panicking!

Good luck!

@anonysquire: Glad to hear all is well! I'm sure it's just natural worry until you can feel lots of kicks. Plus hearing the stories of those poor mamas that lost their babies probably has your worry in overdrive. Try to relax and think of something fun like the nursery :) I'm a worry wart too and I always tell myself that if there was something wrong I'd either already know or I'd know very soon so there is no sense in worrying - it really helps.

Thanks everyone for replying. I went to the midwife and they found the heartbeat fairly quickly. But I still feel so paranoid. I'm trying to figure out if this is my normal anxiety and what I should do at this point or if it's because I keep hearing other peoples bad news. I am sure my midwives think I am a complete nutcase...

You're sort of in that in between time- you can feel movement but its just inconsistent sometimes. I remember it being scary. I obsessed til dd was here and then wished I hadn't. Dopplers can sometimes cause unnecessary panic so I wouldn't (didn't) get one. Remember that places like bbc there are LOTS of babies in the group so it seems more prevalent.

First off, take a deep breath. I agree with everyone else---I was told not to kick counts until 28 weeks. Even then, they just told me to watch for movement.

Having had a loss at 20 weeks, with no warning, there isn't much you can do. You just have to have faith in that baby. One thing that helped me was to say to myself that this baby is not that baby that I lost or the one your friends lost. For whatever reason that made me feel better. Their stories were not indicative of my ending. I bet your midwife is having you come in for your peace of mind. Hang in there!!!

I didn't feel regular movment until 26+ weeks (I had an anterior placenta) but I would for sure ask yoru midwife. And at this point, a doppler might freak you out more, if you weren't able to find heartbeat on your own.

That is scary knowing someone who has lost a baby like that. Eeek. Don't let it put you in a panic though.

Even though I am much further along than you (33+ weeks), I feel movement every day, and even more so since this is my second pregnancy. One of the best ways I've found to get the baby moving is to eat or drink something and then sit or lay down just a little while after. Anytime it has been a few hours since I last felt movement and I feel any sort of panic creeping in, I eat something and just wait.

@anonysquire: Do you have an anterior placenta? I had one and didn't feel movement until 21-22 weeks. The placenta muffled the movement a lot. One of my favorite appointments was when the nice doctor (not my regular one) did the heartbeat check and LO kicked the doppler off. Before that, movement was really light and guesses. I always resorted to lemonade and laying down.

I had a midwife appt last week.

She said to start paying attention to kicks at 28 weeks

She said that it's about quantity not quality, as once they get bigger their movements are more controlled and some kicks will be quite light.

She said if I've noticed (at 28 weeks) that I haven't felt much move my all day, lie down right away and set a 2 hour timer. I need to feel any type of movement 6 times. As soon as I feel 6 I can stop the timer and all is fine. If you don't feel 6 in 2 hours, call in so they can monitor the baby.

She reiterated that 28 weeks was the starting point for counting.

And honestly, thats not just your birth center, regarding the u/s. They do the anatomy scan at 20-22 weeks and then don't do another u/s unless there is an issue here also.

I do not feel movement every day. I have been feeling movement since week 16 but it isn't an everyday thing. Try laying flat and seeing if that helps, that's pretty much the only way I can feel her most of the time. When I had my U/S done baby was moving SO much but I couldn't feel any of it because her back was to us, so she was basically kicking and moving towards the inside. Try not to worry!

tI think you should ask your midwife for how much, movement she wants you to feel at this point. I dont think a doppler will decrease ypur stress. Maybe some space from that birth month group would help, too. I am sure your baby is healthy. Staying calm and relaxed is good for your wee one.

The baby is so small at this point that you are not going to feel movement every day. Heck, some people still haven't felt movement for the first time at 21 weeks. I wouldn't worry about this until 28 weeks when OBs ask you to start doing kick counts (and I'm not even sure if that is early). I'm 27 weeks and I've had many moments where the baby is quiet for a day or two. It's usually a growth spurt and baby is back to kicking and moving in a couple days.
