@caitcat: How about the Peanuts movie? Absolutely not sad or scary. My son (4) has watched it approximately 2638292 times and it’s also cute for adults! Everyone loves snoopy :)

So many great recommendations! Thank you all!

She just wrapped up one of the Tinker Bell movies this afternoon and it was a big hit, with time spent minimal hiding under her blanket. Plus, it bought me an extra hour to wrap up a project for work. It was a win all around. Yay!

I also think Ratatouille would be a good call!

On Amazon Prime: Room on the Broom, and The Gruffalo and the Gruffalo's child are great, and so sweet.

@Bmaja: It's on Netflix and is called Pettersson and Findus 2 (which makes me think there's a first one? if there is, we haven't seen it). From what I gather of the plot, there's a cat and his friend who are trying to make their house festive for Christmas, but have a few silly setbacks along the way. I'd like to think my daughter realizes that it's not in English, but she hasn't ever asked why she doesn't know any of the words!

My 6.5 year old is just starting to get a bit less sensitive about movies (though we had a giant fail with Up a couple weeks ago). Some of her perennial favorites are Sofia the First (the show and the movie); the Tinker Bell movies, especially Pirate Fairy and The Secret of the Wings; The Sword in the Stone and Robin Hood (old Disney movies); and a show on Amazon Prime called Wishenpoof, which is by the same producer as Daniel Tiger. She does also like the Frozen movies, Cinderella, and was totally unfazed by the lava monster in Moana, which surprised me, but we had to stop The Lion King about 20 minutes in and she still refuses to have anything to do with it. So I don’t know if there’s any rhyme or reason to what is too scary and what isn’t.

My 2 year old is terrified of any cartoons. Even super mild ones (like Clifford) can set him off. So we’ve watched more Live Action movies which we enjoy too! Annie, High School Musical, Grease, Parent Trap, Mary Poppins were all hits. He even loved the production of Phantom of the Opera that aired on YouTube last week. How he can watch that happily but be terrified of Daniel Tiger is beyond me :silly:

My four-year-old has only recently (like, while sheltering at home) become brave enough to watch any Disney movies. I think Tangled is the tamest of the ones she's seen.

Long before she was ready for those, our regular rotation was Mamma Mia, Annie (the Quevenzhane Wallis version), and Shrek the Musical (it's on Netflix). Live action movie musicals seem to do a good job of introducing conflict without being scary.

I don’t think Madagascar has any scary bits. And another vote for Sing. Monsters University, maybe? Cars might work, I don’t think it has anything scary. And it’s seasonally inappropriate, but The Snowman might be a hit.

This is out of season, but my kids love the Curious George Halloween movie. I think it's on Netflix and called Curious George and the Halloween Fest? Any Curious George is going to be tame though. Oh, and Winnie the Pooh! Sword in the Stone is also good and Robin Hood (Disney, with the fox) is pretty low key.

I have so been there on this. We have finally gotten mostly over it now that my oldest is 8.

@charlotte: Peanuts has been really good for us! (the version that came out a few years ago.) Charlie Brown gets a little disappointed at times but that's about it.

We also watched Sing about 500 times, has animals and pretty tame! And good songs!

Wall-E was ok too I think.

Maybe Ratatouille? My newly minted 6yo son loves it but I have not sat down to watch from beginning to end.

I just watched The Parent Trap (original version with Hayley Mills) with him, and he stayed engaged. I don't think it is too scary unless you stop to think about the fact that the parents split up the twins when they were babies.

Stay away from the Lion King... my son is not sensitive AT ALL, and he was still scared by the fight scene at the end!

@JennyPenny: That's interesting about Bambi. My daughter has been begging to watch Bambi (she fell in love with the characters in a Disney story book and is obsessed). I keep coming up with one reason or another why its not working because I just couldn't see it going well. It's been years since I've seen it though, so I don't remember the details...I might skim through it one night to see if I think she might not really get it. It is surprising what's gone over her head before, and the older movies have such a different feel from the fast paced suspenseful parts of newer ones. So you never know!

We found that my sensitive daughter could handle a lot more if we read the book first. So we'd get a copy of the DIsney book and read it, then we could reference it while watching the movie. But Tangled was her first disney princess movie after Cinderella and it was fine. Even reading the plot on wikipedia or whatever has helped my daughter prepare.

My 7 year old has always been terrified of all movies that have any element of suspense - and for a while I thought that was all movies, because plot requires some element of suspense! So until COVID, we literally only watched cooking competition shows together because it was our only overlapping interest. (She would often want to watch Daniel Tiger or Arthur movies, but I just could not do that for family movie night!) However, we have discovered recently that she is much more willing to watch movies with real people over cartoons. So we have watched the Parent Trap, Hidden Figures, Rookie of the Year over the past few weeks. Maybe something to try? She still will not do Frozen, Toy Story, etc. Too scary.

My 5 year old is also pretty sensitive to movies. So far the ones that work well are:

Wall-E
Finding Nemo (skip the shark scene)
Bambi (somehow nothing registers as scary/sad to him in this...*shrug*)

ETA: We haven't watched it yet with DS yet, but I don't remember Sing being scary and it has animals :)

We skip a lot.of scenes, I have a 5 year old as well.

Trolls (some of the bergen parts are dark and scary)
Peter Rabbit
Hop
Elf
Moana (again, some dark parts)

I've found that shockingly she enjoys some non animated movies like Parent Trap, etc. more than cartoons. Less dark spots, the skipping scenes is more for parental guidance/language. She also enjoys Be Our Chef on Disney+...not a movie, but fun to watch as a family. It's like Chopped with a Disney theme and entire families participate.

We’ve had a Friday movie night going for a while now...but I’m feeling a little over our regular go-to movie options. My five and a half year old is a super sensitive kid - she’s very overwhelmed by anything scary or sad, and it rules out a lot of movies. She was even afraid of Lucifer the cat in Cinderella, which I thought was a tame otherwise. (I mean, aside from the big picture premise - but that’s over her head!)

Aristocrats was a hit, she enjoyed the Fox and the Hound 2 (not the original)...and some random movie about a cat at Christmas that we found on Netflix has gone over really well. But it’s in German, so I’m pretty sure the only reason it doesn’t get to her is that she doesn’t understand what they’re saying and just likes watching the animated cat. 😂

Any recommendations for happier movies that have gone over well with your kids? Even better if there are animals or princesses in them!
