@JoyfulKiwi: we watched The Snowman last Christmas and she was fine with that. There isn't any conflict (although the snowman melts at the end- we just told her it was like the song Frosty, he will come back next winter)

@Freckles: I was shocked, frankly, but she didn't care. It's one of the big panoramic dome ones. I just made sure we tried on a quiet day, and that we were seated somewhere that would allow us to exit easily if she didn't like it. She sat on my lap for some suspenseful parts, but she really enjoyed it. She still hasn't seen a movie in a regular theater!

@Silva: we watched The Snowy Day this past weekend! My son loves the book, but got nervous when they were "fighting" the "dragon" (I think he though there would be a real dragon?) and when the sled went slipping around. He stuck it through and was so proud when I told him he had watched a "movie".

We haven't had success with anything besides that so far. I'm hoping to try to watch Frosty the Snowman or something like that before Christmas. Here's the weirdest thing of all: my 4 year old will choose to skip holiday parties at school that involve cartoon G-rated movies (even Charlie Brown), but begged to finish watching Iron Man 2 when we were at the furniture store! What?!

My son also loves Puffin Rock and Curious George. We haven't had much luck with movies but he will watch nature documentaries. I think the music is less anxiety-inducing. On our list to try next is Ponyo and Minions.

I'm so glad that I'm not the only one struggling with this! My husband grew up watching all sorts of movies and never had a problem, whereas I struggle with dreams from watching World War Z two years ago! Sorry DS, you get it from me :bummed:

I thought of this thread over the weekend. My DS was invited to a movie theater birthday party and we went. But I explained the situation to the mom in advance and stayed at the party, knowing he would most likely freak out. We only made it 10 minutes into Finding Dory before we had to leave. Poor guy!

@pregnantbee: maybe try Kiki's Delivery Service? It's by the same director/studio, but is more "real" I guess...there are no creatures. Kiki is a witch (a good witch) and has a black cat. The ending could be a little scary because Kiki's friend hangs from a crashed blimp and she needs to save him, but it's the very end, so you might be able to make it through most of the movie? I could see Totoro being a little scary because the creatures are a little strange...especially the cat bus.

My daughter hasn't really seen a lot- just some old Mr. Rogers, a few Daniel Tigers, and a couple Stella and Sam. This weekend we watched Amazon Prime's new short movie- The Snowy Day and it was GREAT. She got nervous when the food and presents went flying and tried to turn it off but I got her to stick with it to the end and she really enjoyed it.

Lorelei is 5 in March, and she's scared of Totoro. She likes the book, but she is super sensitive. She likes Winnie the Pooh, she loves the series "Puffin Rock," though she will leave the room or hide when the fox is in an episode. She likes Barney. Loves Dinosaur Train. Loves Zoboomafoo. She likes the educational IMAX movies at the science center, especially dinosaurs/robots/outer space. For me it's been easiest to try things but just have no expectations. And when we find things she does like I just accept that we will be watching it many times. Many. I guess it makes it easier to limit media intake?

My sons are sensitive as well. The oldest turned 5 this week and loves watching documentaries, we look to National Geographic and the classic PBS shows (NOVA etc) but they are still a bit scary sometimes. We stick with TV shows, haven't had success with movies but like the shows Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, Word World, Popular Mechanics for Kids (on amazon prime and 99% great, no conflict and only a single episode with what I consider negative language). Cars, Planes, Frozen, Toy Story, all too scary. I've had a recommendation for Shaun the sheep but haven't tried it.

I'll throw in another vote for My Neighbor Totoro. It's so gentle and episodic and relatively low stakes. This was the first movie our daughter watched. We love Kiki's Delivery Service too.

@looch: My DD saw Secret Life of Pets and cried for a good part because she was scared (it was a field trip). I think your son is a little older so hopefully he enjoys it!

My daughter is highly sensitive and easily scared. She hides behind her little brother when watching Paw Patrol! The last movie she saw was Aristocats and it actually went pretty well. I also use the common sense media site to help me determine if a movie will be appropriate (i'll compare it to a movie she already saw).

My daughter is highly sensitive. She really enjoys all of the Curious George movies and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. I find a lot of the Disney movies to be too scary at parts for my sensitive kid even at age 4.5.

I use this website and take all of their notes into consideration before allowing her to watch anything. Movies are SO HARD. I want to take her to the theater so badly but nothing has come out yet that will be good for her. :/ https://www.commonsensemedia.org

We avoid on-screen conflict, as well as avoid movies that show characters laughing at people getting hurt (this is my preference, not hers).

Peanuts Movie was mostly good. There's a warplane shooting battle with Snoopy that I wasn't fond of, but otherwise it was tame.

My Neighbor Totoro would probably be perfect. It is very calm and quiet.

My daughter enjoyed Arthur Christmas.

I wouldn't recommend Secret Life of Pets. The majority of the movie is suspenseful chase scenes and animal-on-animal violence. Those cute scenes in the trailer are the only cute scenes in the movie.

Maybe try Miyazaki's My Neighbor Totoro or Kiki's Delivery Service? There are some conflicts (a sister gets lost in Totoro and Kiki is a witch that deals with some depression and starts to lose her powers) but they aren't very confrontational. And the part where the sister gets lost isn't until the end of the movie, so you could get a lot out of it before that happens. Also, they aren't terribly long movies, which might also help? I've shown them to more sensitive kids and they were obsessed with them. Kiki's is probably my 2.5 year old's favorite movie, but he's not a very sensitive kid.
