@char54: we're not going that far, would be Ottawa to Halifax!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'm glad there seems to be a general consensus that 4-6 months is ideal, that will make for easier planning and fit what we were thinking perfectly (thinking about next Fall!).

@skibobrown: We had that happen too! Luckily, we brought a futon mattress with us and some basic utensils and our camping cookware!

We moved more than halfway across the country this summer when DD was 4 months old. We did it in the car over the period of a week. (We stayed with my cousin around the halfway point for a few days during that week). It wasn't too bad. DD was still at an age where sitting in the carseat for most of the day wasn't a huge deal. Now at 8 months, I think she would not be so thrilled to spend 8+ hours per day in the car.

The worst part for us was that our moving truck didn't arrive for more than a week and a half after we arrived at our new house. We basically had to camp out on the floor for that entire time. DD had her Pack N Play, but we desperately missed having a bed, dishes, and chairs.

I'd say around 3-5 months might be the ideal time. Earlier than that, and you might still be figuring out motherhood and what your baby's temperament is. Much later than that, and your baby will become more active, sleep less during the day, and probably not enjoy being strapped into the carseat for hours on end...

We did a 16 hour move when Lala was 4 months. It went really smoothly!

We're taking off in a couple weeks to move about 10 hours away with a toddler and infant (3.5 and 9 months). I think, if we could have chosen, I would've picked to move between 4-6 months. That seems like a really easy timeframe, where the baby is old enough to be sleeping/eating/etc... better but still not old enough to be really affected by the move. 9 months is more hectic than 4-6 months was because now DS sleeps less, is crawling and starting to pull himself up to standing, which means I have to watch him all the time and he takes up more of my day.

I posted asking something similar here if you want to read others' replies: http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/moving-to-a-different-state-with-a-newborn-advice-how-soon-is-too-soon#post-330475

we're moving next week - only a 5 hour drive so no advice from me yet! The only thing I can add as of now is that if you're having professional movers take your stuff, be prepared that they might keep it up to a week. My husband's company provides relocation services but.. we're looking at being in our house without any of our stuff for up to 7 days. I think this will be way easier with a newborn than it might with a more active baby!

Following this as this might also be my reality - might be moving from east coast canada to west coast. REALLY don't want to leave but at least I'm going from ocean to another, right?

I worry about making such a big move with an infant but everyone tells me that is really the best time.

We're throwing around the idea of relocating back to my hometown (about a 15 hour drive away). I'm due in April, and we won't move before then since I need to keep working! Any advice on when during my year of mat leave would be the best for such a big move?
