pack clothes in luggage. keep clothes on hangers and tape them together, and put a garbage bag over them.

pack items in manageable size boxes.

pack a set of sheets, clothes/pjs, towel, soap, toothbrushes, toilet paper, cup, plate, bowl, spoons etc for everyone in a bag in your car so you don't have to unpack a million boxes to get the necessities.

Don't take everything out of drawers, either use them as boxes (kitchen drawers can be emptied at the new place then taken back to the old house) and for furniture just shift them with the stuff still in the drawers!

For hanging clothes, leave them on hangers. I cut a hole in the bottom of a large trash bag and slide the top of the hangers (10-ish at a time, more for smaller clothes) through the hole so that the trash bag fits snuggly around all the clothes. Then I use a piece if duct tape or packing tape and wrap around the top part of the hangers to make sure none fall. That way when the movers take them in you can have them all already hanging in the closet and just use scissors to cut the trash bags off.

Also do as much packing ahead as you can. There is ALWAYS more than you think there is.

Once you arrive, before you do anything else set up yours and the kids beds and get them made (you don't want to have to be making beds after a long day of moving/unpacking).

That's all I've got. Moving sucks. Maybe drop off some wine at the new house to reward yourself for surviving it :)

I label my boxes with the room it goes in and then lost almost everything that's in there. That way I don't have to unpack a million boxes looking for one thing. I pack my clothes in suitcases and use my towels to cushion breakables.

Lay down a sheet and place all your hanged clothing on it. Twist it up (like a large Santa bag) and you'll be able to move way more clothes on one trip. Also if they fall of their hangers they are inside the sheet knapsack.

@Jess1483: I don't have any great advice but my Dh is just like yours- oh well just box up the cabinets at the last minute. Our clothes can go in trash bags! And he wanted to move a lot of stuff ourselves even though we hired movers so save a little money. I put my foot down on that one- one or two car loads was fine but we were paying for the extra hour to move almost everything!

Good luck. Moving sucks.

@yoursilverlining: we do have movers on the 2nd! I just want to be prepared for them. I like the (x of x). I want to be systematic about packing things. DH says "it'll be easy. We will just dump out the drawers into a big box." Cue heart attack.

@DesertDreams88: thanks for the hint on the wrapping. I'll get some of that!

Use color-coded tape to categorize boxes by room,
saves the trouble of writing "kitchen" 20 times:
http://www.amazon.com/Variety-brights-regular-Purpose-Brights/dp/B00K1BX7N0/

We used this a lot too, on anything with drawers or small compartments (like, our kitchen utensil drawer):

Hire movers.

Label your boxes by room, and by number in each room (so, "kitchen" and "box X of X") so you know that you've got everything in the right rooms once you move.

Use dish towels, bathroom towels and bedding to further wrap and breakables

So, brilliant me/DH decided to move in the dead of winter in Montana, a week after Christmas, with a 3 yo and a 6 mo. It's only across town, so I had grand plans of packing a box each day and moving it at my leisure, but throw in Christmas, and the fact that anything we take over there has to be taken all the way down to the basement because there isn't a floor in the rest of the house (the basement is separated from the rest of the house, so it's harder to move things up from the basement than you'd guess), and, well, yeah. So, we move January 2nd, which is also when most of our new furniture will be delivered. The new house is getting all new paint and new floor, so it's not practical to try to move things.

So, I need your best tips and tricks for an easy move. I'm trying to pack things I'm not planning to use for the next week, because presumably I can survive without them for awhile in the new house. I'm also trying to leave DS1's stuff mostly alone (he's getting all new furniture, so that's not too difficult) so he doesn't feel like he's in chaos for a full week. On the 1st, he'll be hanging out at a good friend's house, so we can focus on packing, and on the 2nd, he'll be with my parents, so the logistics of DS1 during the actual move aren't too bad.
