@mrs scrapbook: Maybe Thursday won't be as bad and hopefully sticking to the interstates means it'll be ok. But loading the car and driving in the snow... yikes.

@Pancakes: Blah, I hadn't even thought about the obstructed view issue. But you're right on that.

@Little Misters Mom: Then I will cross my fingers for you that the storm changes direction. I wouldn't put the crib in the car. I wouldn't want to deal with reduced visibility from the storm plus the crib potentially blocking your rear view. Could you sell it and buy a new one here?

@Little Misters Mom: When DH and I moved from Chicago to Louisiana for his job, we were going to have to drive out of a snow storm, so we left earlier in the morning than we planned and raced it out of the city. But we had no choice on dates, his last day of work was Friday in Chicago, and my first day was Monday in Louisiana (he had a week off in between jobs) We made it without any major issues aside from some bad rain in Missouri (or was it Mississippi?)

Also - not sure where you are coming from, but I'm in the Albany area and we don't have any snow predicted for Thursday, if it helps you determine when you will be out of the snow!

@Pancakes: @Mamaof2: @mrs scrapbook: We could go on Friday. I just reaaaallly don't want to. I'm starting work Monday and felt like we were already cutting it super close on being able to get unpacked and ready to go, plus DS has a doctor's appointment and if I reschedule I won't be able to go with him. If it's unsafe obviously we'll have to wait. But we should be out of the snow storm in 2 hours (we're going from upstate NY to DC).

Argh, we already had to delay a week because of our sub-tenants and now this damn storm. I'm feeling so frustrated and stressed!!

DH moved once in a major snowstorm. He would definitely not do it again - the problems were a combination of driving a loaded down car and truck in the snow and carrying things into/out of the house in it too.

However, if you have to go during the storm, can you put the crib in the car, then once you get out of the snow if its too uncomfortable in the car you can pull into a rest stop and put it on the roof? (That would only work if you are driving out of the snow and not into it!)

Or you could try putting a tarp over the crib to keep it dry? Maybe one of those thick blue ones? They seem to keep things dry!

Is it possible to wait out the snowstorm and move a different day? That would probably be my first preference. When we moved LO slept in her GoCrib for about a month and that wasn't bad either, except she could climb out of it, but that might not be an issue for you!

Random question! I’ve spent the past 4 months of my maternity leave about 6 hours from home so DH wouldn’t have to commute this semester. We’re supposed to be moving back first thing Thursday morning and of course a huge snow storm is about to hit. Our original plan was to secure the crib and mattress to the top of our SUV. We have a roof rack and figured we could either do plastic moving wrap or one of those bags. Now I’m worried the crib and mattress are going to get wet and damaged in heavy snow. They aren’t hugely valuable (an ikea gulliver crib and maybe a $130 mattress) but it would be a bummer. However, trying to fit them in the car will be pretty stressful, and I don’t know how everything would fit (we could probably make it work but wouldn’t be able to sit next to LO in the back).

I have a bjorn travel crib DS sleeps well in, so we could just use that for 7 weeks until DH comes back up here. But we’re in the middle of sleep training so I’m hesitant to change things up. Also, Dh would need to take my car back for a week to move it down later meaning I’d eventually need to deal with the hassle of not having a car for 4 days (not insurmountable but annoying).

What should I do? Anyone ever dealt with moving something on top of car in snow or rain?
