We moved DS to a big boy bed in a new room when he turned 3 just before his little brother arrived. We didn't have any issues at first but he eventually figured out he could get out of bed so we actually put up a baby gate to keep him in (he was unable to climb over).

Our second DS is 27 months and just before Christmas he started fighting getting into his crib and actually fell asleep on his floor a few nights in a row. So we went ahead and transitioned his crib to a toddler bed. He has done pretty well with staying in bed, he did choose to sleep on the floor twice. We keep his door shut and he sits in his bed and calls for us to come get him when he wakes up. Fingers crossed it continues to work well for us.

I would try it and see how it goes. We moved DD1 at 2.5 because she was crawling out and we didn’t want her to get hurt. We initially converted it to a toddler bed, but she didn’t do well at all. Strangely when we moved her to a twin bed a few months later (because I was due with her sister), she did so much better and slept just fine.

We moved DD2 at 2 years, 2 months, because I was due a couple months later with our third. She could have benefitted from having the crib a bit longer, but once she got used to the bed it was fine. I wanted the transition complete before we had a newborn in the house.

For what it’s worth, I agree with you that I was worried transitioning later might cause some resentment. Plus, I wanted the crib free so I could place baby there for naps relatively early.

We moved kid #1 at age 2 to a toddler bed and it was really difficult keeping him in bed. We had to buy gates, door knob covers, etc. to keep him in his room and I wish we would have just kept him in the crib longer. With #2, we decided to keep her in the crib until 3.5 and it was such a smooth transition. With #3, we will definitely keep in the crib until 3. I would consider borrowing from a friend or buying a cheap ikea crib to extend your crib time. We got so much more sleep with #2 and way less frustration!

ETA: Both kids were capable of climbing out but only did so on occasion. I was convinced I had to switch after the first occurrence with number 1 due to safety but for number 2 we just made sure the crib was as low as possible and there was nothing dangerous nearby.

I moved both my older 2 at about 23 months. I had no issues with either of them getting out of bed. My oldest waited for us as he didn't realize that he could get up.

I'm planning on moving my youngest about the time she turns 2. I want my oldest to have the room to himself. She will be moving straight to a twin bottom bunk bed just like the older two.

We moved our son after our daughter was born, and he didn’t mind! We just made sure to make a big deal about him getting his big boy bed and didn’t dwell on the crib moving to my daughters room. They are a little over 2.5 years apart, and we made the switch just before he turned three. Before that, she was sleeping in a pack and play in our room so we didn’t need the crib.

Buy a new crib. Don’t fix what ain’t broke
It’s a small price to pay to maintain some control and sleep normalcy before your lives are upended

My 3 yo is still in his crib (he’s been able to climb out since 14 months)
My daughter was nearly 5 when she asked for a real bed.

I repeat, do not fix what is not already broken.

My youngest we moved a month after he turned 2 as he learned to climb out. Straight to older brothers single ikea bed that night. We removed literally everything from the room and his dresser is bolted to a stud. We have a handle lock on the inside of his door and alarms on the outside doors (he is an escape artist) plus still a baby monitor. It was novel for a couple days but it’s really been fine. At first he would run around and bang on the walls and such for fun, but now he just sits and reads in bed or plays with his stuffies, calls to us in the mornings. I won’t be taking the handle lock off for a long while until he gets more mature, and I know everyone has a different comfort level on that (we are right across the hall)

My oldest we moved after he turned 3 and he never left the bed for a year ha! He’s a rule follower while the little guy is a total rebel. Depends on your kids personality I think but I wouldn’t worry if you want to move him before the new baby.

@Umbreon: We moved our eldest when she was 21-22 months. She climbed out of her crib, so it was a safety issue. (We also had to transition our youngest to the crib, because she was outgrowing the bassinet).

It took about 3-4 days for her to really understand staying in her bed at night time, but we would consistently put her back in, and had absolutely no problems since.

Edited to add: Went straight to a twin size mattress, in a bed frame.

We moved my son at 22 months from the crib to a full size bed (needed the crib for little bro) and he literally didn't treat his bed any differently than his crib. I'm not sure if the bed was so big he didn't realize he could get out of it himself or what, but he just stayed in it and waited for us to come get him in the morning. The actual easiest transition and I was SO worried about it in advance!

@Umbreon: My daughter was closer to three when we moved her out of her crib, but switching to a mattress on the floor has been a great decision! At 5, she still flops out of bed fairly regularly, but has never woken up from it.

I moved both my older children out of the crib a little after two with no problems. My oldest child I moved in advance of the middle child being born, and I moved my middle child because he was climbing. My oldest child actually did not seem to realize that he could get out of bed without a parent getting him for a long time, and actually slept better in the bed, I think because it was softer. I made sure to transition him before the new baby, but I don't think it mattered. My youngest did sometimes climb out, and would occasionally fall asleep on the floor, but it didn't cause any problems.

My plan was to transition our son at around 2 years 2 months, when his sister would be close to outgrowing the bassinet. He's a tall kid, and I figured he might be climbing out by then anyways. It did not go well. I did not have the energy for it with everything else going on, so we put him back in the crib. Long story short, he is almost 3 and still in his crib. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.... My now 1 year old has been sleeping in the travel crib since she was three months old. She loves it, and sleeps beautifully. And at least I'm getting use out of the travel crib despite not leaving the house in a year 🤷‍♀️I say play it by ear. If your older child isn't ready, the baby can always use a pack n play, etc or you can get another crib.

DS moved to a toddler bed before he turned 3 and it generally went great. But it was the kind that his crib turned into. I'm not sure how he would have done with a real bed.

@Umbreon: I don’t think 2 is too young. My DS started climbing out of his crib around two, so we had to transition his crib to a toddler bed. He crawled out a few times, but for the most part, he did great, and I didn’t have to worry about him falling from the crib.

Both my kids transitioned fine to a bed at 2 and 2.5ish. I do think a big part of it though was that they sleep in little cots at daycare and so the bed isn’t a huge transition from that. We just have a twin mattress on the ground to start. You could always just try putting a mattress on the ground and see how your LO manages.

I think it depends on the child. Both of my kids moved up a big bed (twin size) before they were 2.5 and we had no issues whatsoever. My second son got out of bed a couple times but we talked to him about it and it stopped pretty quickly.

We were also in the same position and I also agree to wait as LONG as you possibly can to move to a bed. I read somewhere it's a much bigger developmental leap than we think. My son was 3years 2 months and he actually offered his little brother his crib! His big bed transition (a double bed) went great. We kept the newborns in the basinet for 5 months anyway.

Personal opinion - two is too young. At two they don’t have the impulse control to stay in bed. We were in almost the exact same situation, and we decided to buy a second-hand crib for the second baby so that we could keep our older son in his crib until he was ready to move.

LO is 21 months old and we have baby #2 due in august.

We are trying to figure out a timeline for moving LO out of the crib. I'm thinking it would be better to move him before the baby is here, so he doesn't feel like the baby is taking his bed? Or is that silly to worry about?

We were thinking we could move the crib in our room and just use the crib from the get go with the new baby instead of a bassinet.

We were thinking of transitioning him to a bed shortly after his birthday in April. Is 2 years old too young though?
