@spaniellove: Oh, really? That's good to know. I work for a pretty big company, so I doubt there's a big need for IF. Plus, even if did, the changes wouldn't happen til next year.

@bluestriped bee: Sorry to barge in - I know you're only doing one more IUI and aren't really looking for IUI coverage anymore. But you can get coverage even in states without a mandate! Although we live in NJ our coverage is through a PA employer/insurance company, and PA does not give one crap about infertility. It's all about whether the employer wants to have it covered and chooses an insurance plan that has any IF coverage. If it weren't for our insurance plan, I don't think any of DH's coworkers would have kids either - almost all of them went through IF or recurrent m/c. So there might be an IF-friendly employer where you live!

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Sorry to keep reviving this thread!

We decided on IUI after 2 rounds of Femara and 1 round of clomid failed to even make me ovulate. 2 rounds of injections with TI both got BFN's. So we went for it with IUI. I had met my insurance prescription max for fertility drugs and had some leftover from a failed cycle. So, since we already had the meds, and our RE suggests IVF after 3 failed injectable cycles (he claims you plateau after the 3rd round), we decided it was time to go for it since we didn't want to do IVF

Good luck @Mrs. Jump Rope!

We went to IUI after 14 months of TI. I had one MC, and we tried for another 3 months, then went to IUI. The first one failed, and the second one is later this week. My DH has motility & morphology issues, so we're hoping IUI will do the trick. We're not ready to consider IVF just yet.

sounds like you made a decision but just wanted to chime in with my experience. we are doing our first IUI this cycle and would have done it for LO too if I hadn't gotten pregnant. we don't have a sperm meets egg problem as I've had 3 chemicals and 1 success. but my RE suggested it because it could up your odds (after all you can BD too so cover your bases), and that's helpful because it limits your exposure to medications you are doing with the IUI (by hopefully lessening the number of cycles you have to try). he was flexible on whether we did it or TI but I went ahead because we already met our deductible this year. this cycle I'm planning to do Clomid, Ovidrel and Endometrin with the IUI.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I agree, I don't think meeting a $1,000 deductible is a big deal especially with your LO. You know you will pay that out of pocket at some point in the year, might as well be sooner. Hope you guys have a good discussion.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Ahh, if you are meeting the deductible straight away then it might change my perspective. Does your insurance limit the number of times you can try iui? My normally fabulous insurance covers a whopping one iui per lifetime.

@Cole: Economically, yes, it's an idea we are tossing around. I got an EOB today from my October cycle, and the total was around $500 for the monitoring (blood work, ultrasound). My cost was $19.

Starting in January, our insurance plan re-news so we will have to meet our $1,000 deductible before our 90/10 kicks in. Our infertility rider is changing, too, and it's also 90/10 after we meet our deductible. This year, our IF rider covered IUI straight away!

DH & I are going to talk more in depth tonight about what we'd like to do. He pointed out that we have to meet our deductible before any coverage kicks in for us, and we're going to meet it one way or another -- so what difference does it make if it's the RE and IUI?

(My Advair is $1200, so either way, we are meeting the deductible in January!)

I agree with the others, it doesn't seem that IUI will make a difference for you over TI. Maybe talk to the fiance people at your RE's office and see if they can code the RPL testing as anything different? Maybe as Autoimmune testing. (I know nothing about insurance coding). My insurance SAID they wouldn't cover any of it until 3 losses, but I only had 2 on the books and it was completely covered. The testing I had done was billed at around $2000, and I think we paid $30 in the end.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I know very little about the medical details side of this but it sounds like from an economic standpoint it might be wise to give iui a try. It doesn't seem like it will hurt anything since it doesn't look like they would change your medications (did I understand that correctly?) and if otherwise you will have to wait a few months to save up to try it what's the point in waiting? It seems to me that worse case scenario you either get a bfn or another loss.

I really, really hope it doesn't become necessary but could you ask what their ability to process the rpl tests would be at the end of the year in the event that you have another chemical pregnancy? If your insurance is changing after the first of the year it might be super helpful to be able to get it done this year if it unfortunately comes to it.

If it is covered I would say go for it. It can't hurt, right?

We did 6 medicated cycles with TI: 3 clomid, 2 femara then 1 more clomid. After the 6th failed cycle we switched RE offices and after some more testing the RE had us move straight to IUI with injectibles. We had no male factor at all, it was all me. Our second IUI was successful.

Good points from others about IUI not really solving the problem since it's not an egg+sperm problem. I would want more investigative work done about why there have been previous losses.

With that said, I really preferred Femara over Clomid. I did have multiple follies on it, though I'm not sure that happened each time (I took it for 3 cycles).

I took injectable meds last cycle--very expensive and time consuming due to the need for close monitoring. The IUI would be the cheapest part for us--a little over $300. The RE pushed for an IUI, even though my husband had a great SA. They say that in our situation, meds + IUI equals about 30% chance of pregnancy, and it's about half that without an IUI.

There are unknown possibilities for me, like hostile CM and mild endo--IUI helps with both of those.

@spaniellove: I'm really not sure if they go off a formula. I called Sunday (CD1) to get a script for clomid but didn't talk directly to my RE or coordinator. The nurse I spoke with said moving on to another option isn't usually suggested until you've had three failed cycles.

I met with my RE in early November to discuss options, and she have me quite a few but didn't push one treatment over another. We just reviewed the options and side effects.

We did IUI after 6 rounds of clomid, which resulted in 1 MC. We had unexplained IF, and even though both our #s were good, statistically we didn't have a very good chance of getting pregnant on our own. Our RE actually wanted us to go right to IVF but I'm the one who said I wanted to try IUI first, and luckily our 2nd worked!

For us, the IUI itself was no big deal, it was the injectable meds and all the testing that went with it that made it such an ordeal. But if your problem isn't getting BFPs, then I'm not sure how much IUIs would help. Good luck!
